King Beat (unrel. 10)

For a while I've pondered the idea of trying to do a piece of music to synchronize with the final "Star-gate Sequence" in the movie "2001 A Space Odyssey". Its one of my favorite films, and this sequence is still amazing. This idea, in a similar vein to Pink Floyd's "Echoes", isn't so much an alternative soundtrack, just another way of enjoying this sequence, as the original soundtrack for me is irreplaceable!
I set up a project in Ableton live using 1 instance of a Moog V for that typical TD sequence bass, a 2 instances of a VCS 3 doing a complimentary bass and an analogue lead, several Mellotrons (Gforce's Mtron Pro), with typical recognizable sounds such as the Choir, Flute, Vibes, Orchestra, Piano and some FX, and ARP2600 for FX and synth percussion. I also used several instances of Guitar Rig Pro to put everything through vintage style FX, to give it a vaguely grungy spacey feel.
With this set up I spent a few hours just playing, improvising and having fun... getting lost in all the swirling spaciness :)
I did a one take "live" recording of an arrangement and used this as the basis for the track. At this point I hadn't played along with the movie, it was just an arrangement of what felt right at the time.
I then put the music with the sequence in Premier and was quite surprised to see it kind of fit :)! I then added in some additional cues to help it and emphasise some parts, and also extended the track to the end of the sequence (my "live" version came to 14 mins).

Under the shorter title "Hexapods from the Planet Bogger", this whimsical track was my solo contribution to the collaborative EP "Vacua for a Lost Millennium", by  Zachary Zena Giberson and myself.  This EP, published by Cian Orbe at https://archive.org/details/cior-103-zachary-zena-giberson-david-m-paganin-vacua-for-a-lost-millenium-ep, collides our respective musical styles and thematic obsessions in a juxtaposition that is at once cohesive and dissonant, counterpointed and dislocated, blended and immiscible. We strove to make our EP a finely-woven surreal sonic web of contradictions intended to delight and to confound, to energise and to challenge.

Disquiet Junto Project 0333: Half Evil

One of my favourite “positive” melodies is the middle section of “Cleve and the Mule”, a piece from Alfred Newman’s brilliant soundtrack for “How The West Was Won”. It depicts the arrival of a man who is a gambler and a shyster and is transformed by the emergence of the positive side of his nature, represented by this theme.

This fragment was stretched (crudely) twice, then transformed into something a bit darker using The Mangle and ambient v.3. These were overlaid and mixed to transform the “good” theme into something more suggestive of the dark side.

It ends with the sample being treated with vocoder and Crazy Ivan, finishing with an odd artefact from the mangled version.
