Interstellar travel is one of the most intriguing dreams to ever spark the human imagination. The idea of traveling to other star systems and visiting and perhaps colonizing exoplanets - that could be similar to our own Earth - has been the subject of many popular science fiction novels, movies, and TV series. Visiting exoplanets and exploring the beauty of the universe is something that is still a long way off - perhaps centuries. Let’s hope it comes sooner than that. In 1994, Mexican theoretical physicist, Miguel Alcubierre proposed that it would theoretically be possible for a spacecraft to travel faster than light in a so-called relativistic “warp bubble” - without violating the laws of Einsteinian physics. Alcubierre even presents mathematical formulae to prove his theory. However, our technology has yet to devise a source of energy to power such a spacecraft — which would probably require antimatter as an energy source. Among the other as-yet unresolved technical challenges would be, for example, navigation and the ability to control the direction and speed of the spacecraft’s travel. When those technological hurdles are overcome. . . Imagine the possibilities.
