Chinese electro dub duet AM444 revisited by French composer and singer Matthieu Chedid -M-Special single “Détache Toi”
Following his first tour in China in 2010, French pop rock maverick Matthieu Chedid better known under his artist name –M- , was hungry for new sounds from the middle Kingdom. After listening to different Chinese artists Matthieu finally had a crush on AM444, the duet project of Shanghai based vocalist and MC, ChaCha, and Dutch producer Jay Soul. Matthieu said he got seduced and inspired at once by the voice and universe of ChaCha and the soul colors of Jay Soul. Even though they have never met, he felt he had something in common with ChaCha and spent weeks digging into all her past songs. –M- and ChaCha might not belong to the same world, -M- being often under the spotlights and ChaCha preferring the shadow of underground clubs and mostly working with dubstep and bass music artists.  However -M- decided to collaborate with her and Jay Soul and did  a remix version of “Shen Jing Mo Shao”, a tune from AM444’s first album “Eye Wonder”. Re-titled “Détache toi” in French (“Break away”), the tune perfectly blends ChaCha and Matthieu’s voices and adds the chemistry of elaborate guitar chords to Jay Soul’s dub-by tune.

Illustrator and animation artist Leilei was chosen to design the cover of Shenjing Moshao’s EP. He looked at many of –M- visual elements, loved his look and universe and came out with a beautiful and shimmering collage.

Soundway’s second foray into South East Asia is focused on North-East Thailand, the epicentre of Molam and Luk Thung Isan music. Hypnotic phin & khaen riffs, pulsing, electrified country rhythms and heartfelt vocals punctuate another journey into the lesser known reaches of 1970s Thai music. 

The first volume of The Sound of Siam, released in 2011, was the first introduction for many to the artistry and innovations of modern Thai music. One of the most popular compilations on Soundway Records the music even made it onto the big screen with ‘Mae Jom Ka Lon’ by Dao Bandon featured on the soundtrack of ‘The Hangover Part II’.  In an interview with LA Times Mick Jagger spoke of discovering the collection that “some nutter put together” after hearing the riff from Jumpin’ Jack Flash on one of the tracks from the compilation.

In this second volume of The Sound of Siam the focus is firmly on the music the sounds of north-east Thailand, or Isan and attempts to show how a genre evolved and developed from essentially an acoustic tradition with specific geographic roots, to one that started to incorporate other instruments and influences that reached out to the Isan diaspora around the country.

The term molam is actually two separate words pushed together: Mo meaning ‘expert’ or ‘doctor’ and lam meaning ‘to sing’. Hence the literal translation means ‘singing expert’. Many molam records have extended intros that allow a vocalist to establish the theme of the song, as well as flex their improvisational muscles.

Luk thung (literally ‘song of the countryside’)is a much broader, rural style that had a bigger impact nationally. Artists like Saksiam Petchompu began fusing this style with molam, a move which propelled him to national fame. You can hear the influence of western funk, as well as Thai arrangements, on the luk thung Isan (as the hybrid became known) smash Jeb Jin Jeb Jai included here.

The Sound of Siam 2 - Molam & Luk Thung Isan from North-East Thailand 1970 - 1982’ features 19 tracks, many appearing outside of Thailand for the first time. Both CD and double LP & is accompanied with detailed liner notes written by compilers Chris Menist and Maft Sai.

Always a peak record at any Paradise Bangkok event, 'Teoy Salap Pamaa' is another melodic mode. Pamaa is actually the Thai (and Isan) word for Burma, implying that this teoy might have taken its lead from a Burmese rhythm or melody. There is frenetic interplay between the khaen and cymbals creating an urgency tempered only by Kunchai’s ever-authoritative performance with her post- Ubon Pattana Band group, Mueng Dok Bua. Once again, she has the relationship blues as she decries men as being perennially untrustworthy liars.

Premier coffret de la nouvelle collection d’Accords Croisés « Le Chant des Fleuves »  consacrée aux musiques des grands fleuves du monde.

Entre le canal de Suez, les Nil(s) et la mer rouge, les villes qui bordent le Nil ont hérité d’une multitude de richesses musicales qui se sont croisées, mélangées, enrichies….entre cultures africaines et cultures arabes les peuples de cette sorte de triangle formé par le Soudan, l’Egypte et l’Ethiopie ont tissé nombre de liens dans leurs déplacements respectifs.

Le raks sharki  (la « danse du ventre ») a rencontré la chanson des cafés du Caire, alors que se maintient encore le répertoire savant de la musique égyptienne, soutenu par les petits orchestres takht, et les chants d’Oum Kalsoum restent au cœur des influences de nombre de nouveaux répertoires.

La musique de Nubie a bousculé le jeel le plus moderne, l’ethio jazz d’Addis Abeba a gonflé les musiques éthiopiennes, Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed ou Mahmoud Ahmed font le lien entre la tradition des azmaris et un chant nouveau presque soul. Khartoum s’est créé son blues puis son rap, le rappeur Emmanuel Jal rejoint Abdel Gadir Salim qui chante la vie des nomades…

Et la chanson arabe, nubienne, éthiopienne, continue de raconter les crues, la beauté du Nil, la folie de l’amour, les traces de l’histoire, l’espoir de changements…
