Public Service Broadcasting released their debut album ‘Inform - Educate - Entertain’ on 6 May 2013 through Test Card Recordings, entering the UK charts at #21. The accompanying album tour saw sell-out shows around the country, including Manchester's Sound Control and 2 dates at London's Village Underground.  

The next single taken from the album, ‘Theme From PSB’, is their summery, banjo-infused calling card which will soundtrack a string of festival slots around the UK. These include headline shows at Secret Garden Party, End Of The Road & Wickerman, plus appearances at Glastonbury, Standon Calling, Green Man and many more. They are also set for two very high profile support slots, with the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park and New Order at Jodrell Bank. 

Theme From PSB follows recent road-safety single Signal 30 and ode to the Himalayas, Everest. Rather than focusing on a specific moment in time, it sees the band turn the spotlight onto themselves and other public service broadcasters who came before them, telling of ‘these dreamers, [who] were pioneers; they envisioned a great institution’. 

Along the way it takes in pioneering American news broadcaster Edward R. Murrow’s famous speech from 1958, celebrating an instrument that can ‘teach… illuminate and yes, even inspire’, breezing along to a climax which invokes the very best that Public Service Broadcasting - both the institution and the band - has to offer.

The band will be pressing a limited edition pink vinyl to accompany the release, the b-side of which is a live recording of previous single Everest, recorded at their sold out date at London's Village Underground in May.

In April 2013 we were approached by the organisers of the Explore the North festival in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. They asked if we would use some footage of the Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour), the world's biggest ice skating race, and write some songs around it. So we did. Granted unique access to propaganda films from WWII-era Britain by the BFI and setting them to new music, Public Service Broadcasting unveil 'The War Room EP'. Expect breathtaking visuals, atmospheric synths, pounding drums, Krautrock guitars and poignant piano as J. Willgoose, Esq and his drumming companion Wrigglesworth teach the lessons of the past through the music of the future...

The lead track from the EP is named 'Spitfire' - an adaptation of the 1942 propaganda film 'The First of the Few', telling the story of the origins of the talismanic fighter. The track is a driving, Krautrock-influenced tune and the video stars Hollywood legends David Niven & Leslie Howard.

Howard was viewed by Josef Goebbels as the most dangerous British propagandist of the era and his own life was to end in tragedy when the passenger plane he was travelling on in 1943 was shot down by the Luftwaffe over the Bay of Biscay.

'The War Room EP' is dedicated to J. Willgoose, Esq.'s great-uncle, George Willgoose, who died at the Battle of Dunkirk in May 1940 aged 26. The final track of the EP, 'Waltz for George', is a sombre close to affairs, featuring the banjolele owned and played by George Willgoose which has remained in the family.

Spitfire - Public Service Broadcasting

London-based Matt Emery is mostly known for his solo piano pieces, which are delicate, nostalgic, and a little bit sad. Last year (right about this time), Emery released his debut on Injazero Records, titled Empire, which immediately shot up to my top piano records, and inevitably made it on the Best of the Year lists, in the "Music For Watching The Snow Slowly Fall In The Moonlight" entry. Emery also shared his selections with us on his Eternal Bliss mix, put together exclusively for the Headphone Commute Podcast. This Friday, September 7th, the composer returns with a new single, titled “I Put a Flame in Your Heart”. I’ll leave the full band version and the edit for you to discover in all due time, but today I wanted to share this very special Vessels remix, premiering on these pages alone.

As you can hear from this piece (and the remix itself), we’re now in a more gritty territory, with percussive and electronic treatments to the track that puts it more alongside Jon Hopkins, Kiasmos, and Moderat, rather than the softer side of Nils Frahm, and even with the up-front expedient vocals, the track ticks all of the right boxes for this fan and follower. Speaking of which, I’ve witnessed Emery sing during his sold-out live performance (on the very last track) and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of his voice [which you will hear clearly on the “Vocal Edit” of the release], and that’s a rare event for me notice, as I’m mostly an instrumental kind of fiend.

The single features a piano-only original of the piece, alongside a more post-rock[y] epic edit, which showcases the versatility of this UK artist. “The full band version sees Emery’s music swell with frantic drums, throbbing synths and a full choir culminating in an expansive interpretation, more aggressive in comparison to his gentle and intricate modern classical piano and string repertoire.” A very nice rework of the original, with the “Vessels Remix”, definitely hitting the spot.

Once again, the single is out this Friday, September 7th, 2018, on Injazero Records, available on all of your favourite digital platforms.

A Drifting Up

Something a little different from me this week. Whilst it's not aimed at the dancefloor I'm really proud of this mix. Lemon Jelly meets New Order is probably the best description I've heard. It's strictly promo only for the moment but will see a proper release at some point next year. Public Service Broadcasting are a London-based duo whose main ingredients are: 1) J. Willgoose, Esq. on guitars, banjos, other stringed instruments, samplings, electronic things; 2) Wrigglesworth on drums, pianos and other electronic things.

Taking samples from old public information films, archive footage and propaganda material, and mould them into 21st century songs.

Everest is based on the 1953 film 'The Conquest of Everest', which told the story of Hillary & Tensing successful ascent of the tallest mountain in the world, and which was directed by expedition member George Lowe.

The band have been getting major props from both 6 Music and XFM (amongst many others) and are preparing a major label album release for next year.
