The Assignment: Record the first third of a trio.

Please note: While this project is the start of a three-part sequence that will unfold over the course of three consecutive weeks, you can participate in any or all three of those parts. 

Step 1: This week’s Junto project is the first in a sequence intended to encourage and reward collaboration. You will be recording something with the understanding that it will remain unfinished for the time being. Your part will be done, but more will happen. Read on.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music using any instrumentation of your choice. Conceive the piece as something that leaves room for something else — other instruments, other people — to join in. (Keep in mind that your piece resulting from this week’s project will be panned to the left in the second and third weeks of this sequence.)

Step 3: Record a short piece of music, roughly two to three minutes in length, as described in Step 2. 

Step 4: This is important: be sure to make your track downloadable because it may be used by someone else in the next Disquiet Junto project, and the one after that.

Deadline: Monday, May 12, 2025, 11:59pm (that is: just before midnight) wherever you are.

SONG 80 - DisquietJunto0690 - Knot Bad

The source is the Burns song 'Ye Banks and Braes', which I selected more or less at random from an old songbook. I arranged the notes as instructed and played the resulting sequence on a recorder. The track has two parts and in the first I duplicated the recording several times, made various alterations to the pitch and created a round or canon,  adding a degree of delay and reverb. The second part is the result of playing the notes in a totally random order, again with some additional delay and reverb.

The Assignment: Record the final third of a trio.

There are two versions of the instructions for this week’s project — one very short, the other very long.

Very short version (roughly 25 words): Select a track from last week’s duet project (disquiet.com/0698) and add a third part dead center between the left and right stereo channels to complete a trio.

In history some ideas perished, others spread the world. Some of them survived quite long gaps of silence over time. 
In the end you never know if an idea came to an end or will come back some day..

The Assignment: Break apart a piece of music and fill the resulting spaces.

Step 1: Choose a piece of music (whether your own or something in the public domain) and break it into sequential pieces. You might do this to a recording, or you might place gaps between parts of a notated melody (just to provide two different ways this instruction might be interpreted).

Step 2: Now, fill the various gaps, however many there may be, resulting from Step 1.

Hosomi Ayako (1907–1997) was a prominent haiku poet from Aogaki, Hyogo. After a series of personal tragedies, including the deaths of her husband and mother, she found solace in haiku during an illness. She later married Sawaki Kinichi, leader of the modern haiku group Kaze, and was deeply involved in the haiku community until her passing at 90.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
