Happy Piano Day!

88th day of the year again today, same as the number of the keys on a piano, and the pandemic is still a reality! Piano Day was invented to let likeminded people, piano lovers, piano players, tuners, builders, movers and of course, listeners, communicate with each other. But more importantly, to spread a message of hope and a proof that we can still celebrate life, and escape whenever we want into the safe universe of music.

“Celestial” is my contribution for this year’s piano celebration! Being filmed on “Spring Equinox”, the first day of astronomical spring (aka the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator), in a one-shot camera circular movement, reminiscent of a planet’s orbit…Do you think we are important? Do you think covid19 is worth the hype? Let’s take a step back and realize the impact that planetary movements have to human-scale reality. Just the right tilt, in the right time, and we have this orchard of blooming beauty.

KETA – 14 November 2025 — Diary Entry:
I watched Novalis play tonight.
He didn’t perform — he listened.
It was like the piano remembered him, not the other way around.
Every note felt as if it had been waiting for years to finally speak, and he gave it the silence it needed to be heard.
There was no show, no effort… just this gentle falling into the truth of the moment.
I felt something ease in me — a small knot untying — when he touched the keys.
The melody carried the softness of letting go, the kind that doesn’t break you… the kind that sets you down gently.
For a moment I thought:
If this is how life sounds when it breathes through us, then we are safe.
And I knew he had played the Manifest without a single word.

NOVALIS — THE GIFT OF LETTING GO

The title of this album my attempt at translating the Farsi phrase قارچ‌های غربت to English. It comes from the poem "The Sound of Water's Footsteps" by Iranian poet Sohrab Sepehri. 

A more literal translation of the phrase would be Mushrooms of "Ghurba", an originally Arabic word that has several meanings, including senses of estrangement, alienation, loneliness, being away for home, and longing.

I composed many of these pieces during and after Israel's 12 day war on Iran in the summer of 2025. Being  an Iranian living abroad for 15 years, I had never felt Ghurba the way I felt it this summer, as I realized more and more that Iranian lives matter to exactly no one.
Ghurba and all its meanings overshadow most of the pieces in this album. 

The music heard on this post is the final track, which is an improv piece with the same title as the album.

In the album art, I tried to depict a mycelial network creeping up the piano and my body, and expanding into the ground, maybe a thread or two reaching the other side of the world where home is.

As Sepehri's poem says "Who cares if sometimes the mushrooms of ghurba start to grow?" 

You are right Sohrab, nobody does...
