Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.

Take a look over Ashley Burchett’s back catalogue and you’ll find the Greater London resident has played an understated yet influential role in purporting British techno. Fifteen years ago Burchett’s prevailing Ø [Phase] project debuted on Sheree Rashit and Steve Bicknell’s Cosmic Recordings before providing Cosmic ID with its final record in 2002, and since 2007 Burchett's helped mould and define the sound of Token by becoming the label’s marquee artist.

In 2013 the Belgian imprint finally coaxed the debut album from Ø [Phase], Frames Of Reference, described in Tony Naylor’s 4/5 review for Resident Advisor as, “a techno album of real imagination and depth that, when it needs to be, is brutally functional.” Almost two years since its release Ø [Phase] is back with Alone In Time?, his second studio album which adds to the continuous slew of unrivalled long players Token has put out of late. Token spreads the 11-tracks on Alone In Time? across three heavy weight discs, and the music further demonstrates Burchett’s deft skill in linear arrangements shaped to fit the warehouse frame, while painting a colourful, Detroit influenced side to his productions yet to really be heard to this extent before.

This uncharted sound of Ø [Phase] can be found in tracks like “Remote”, the album’s homage to electro, to the jittery, alien grooves of “Spacialize”, “Mo_del” and “Nep-tune”. There’s big room domination on productions like “Orbitron” and “R-Mash”, while the album’s title-track is a journey through Burchett’s conceptual references to cosmology, time and isolation. Burchett explains, "it was always an intention to make another album and now just felt like the right time. Life moves on, we change and grow. As lessons get learned and ideas form, the desire to express them gradually manifests."

Furthermore, Burchett adds, “Frames Of Reference was about overcoming personal struggles and challenges, while Alone In Time? is more forward facing.” With an extensive back catalogue in his wake, Ø [Phase] has become a relied source for the discerning techno DJ and these new, expertly crafted club cuts add to his ever-expanding pool of productions for selectors to choose from, and it’s clear, if the bouncing rhythm of “Blind Eye” and orchestral epic of “The Maze” is anything to go by, Ø [Phase] isn’t only head strong, but standing tall.

For some of you 'Pregnant' may sound familiar. Due to popular demand, we have decided to reissue this 12:42 stomper that was part of Dekmantel's Anniversary Series back in 2012. Don't be a fool and pay silly Discogs prices. We've fully remastered the 2012 version, so make sure you get this baby second time around. 'Pregnant' continuously builds around a vocal that keeps you locked in, while the carefully constructed synth progressions showcase van Hulle’s keen ear for melody. Fire on the floor guaranteed.

On the flip, van Hulle serves-up a fresh cut. 'Star Butchers' is a jazzy deep house gem, that's most likely to end up in the bag of people who admired 'Pregnant'. The bonus 'Darling Edit' of 'Star Butchers', is on the deep and dramatic side of things, and easily equally as good. The track is a co-production between Awanto 3 and the mysterious but talented Darling on keys.

Following on from the huge success of their last release together; Sirens, Mark Jenkyns is back under the Hot Creations umbrella alongside his longtime collaborator Mizbee. Allow us to introduce Soulfood EP. The four track release also features a vocal appearance from profound lyricist Sheff and a remix by tech house virtuoso Inxec.

Typical of Hot Creations, Jenkyns opens the EP with a dynamic beat. Questions feat. Sheff is a funky, fierce anthem brimming with catchy melodies and arousing vocals. Relish in Northern singer/songwriter Mizbee's charming vocals as she guides us through the bustling second track; Soulfood. There's something about Mizbee and her stunning voice, encased in a compelling bassline and jazzy piano tunes, her pleasing lyrics flow throughout Heated. Inxec brings his special touch to his Questions Remix, a lively take on the original, complete with resounding horns and a mid-way vocal breakdown.

When asked about the EP Jenkyns remarked: "I feel this EP is food for the soul, it has something for everyone, grooves a plenty and jam packed full of great vibes!", and what a delicious meal it is. 2018 is set to be an exciting year for Newcastle-born Jenkyns, with an array of tracks set to be released this year on the likes of Desert Hearts, VIVa, Cajual and Resonance Records. Fellow Geordie Mizbee has an exciting year as she puts the finishing touches to her highly anticipated first album. Sheff, hailing from the Midlands has had a pious musical career beginning as an editor before finding his calling in electronic music. Remixer Inxec boasts support from some of the scene's biggest names including Sasha, Lee Burridge and Craig Richards.
