DMX Krew returns to Gudu Records with ‘Return to Jupiter’, his second EP for the label and the first release of a 2023 that will be the label’s busiest yet.

Ed DMX made his debut for Gudu with 2019’s ‘Don’t You Wanna Play?’ EP, becoming the first artist to release on the label outside Peggy herself. Ed and Gudu have retained a regular working relationship ever since: he mastered Indonesian crate-digger Dea’s ‘Glazer Drum’ release for Gudu, contributed a pair of remixes to the reissue of Riff’s South African electro curio ‘Jacks Jive’, and now returns to the label with ‘Return to Jupiter’, a new original four-track EP.

Ed has been one of electronic music’s most respected faces for over 25 years. Debuting in the mid-1990s, he released his first decade of music almost exclusively through Grant Wilson-Claridge and Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label and his own Breakin’ imprint, but recent years have seen him ply his trade across a who’s who of dance music’s most acclaimed underground labels: including Hypercolour, Balkan Vinyl, Central Processing Unit and, of course, Gudu.

Inspired by the futurist funk and vivid synthesiser epics of classic Detroit, ‘Return to Jupiter’ is dripping with richness and colour, driven by the sort of thick analogue basslines and distinctive melodies that have come to define Ed’s catalogue. The EP’s title track sets the tone for what’s to follow, introducing a language of sorts for the record - before ‘Altered Chords’ turns the funk up to 11, ‘U Ain’t Down’ aims its distorted kicks and wiggy, manipulated lead straight at peak time dancefloors, and ‘I Love Juan’ closes the EP on a star-gazing tip.

Arvid Wretman, AKA Your Planet Is Next, has assumed the role of musical storyteller with a serious mean streak of DIY electro. Wretman’s latest album tells its tale through the eyes of an imagined anti-hero. He conjures up the gritty underbelly of an over-populated megalopolis; a world of dilapidation, ruin and sin, where stiletto knives are a dime a dozen and our titular protagonist, the FOG MAN, stalks the streets. In an oddball tradition, there’s an absurdist, left-of-centre flex coursing throughout. This is the Stockholm native at his strangest, radiating fuck-off attitude and an embrace of imperfection as he maximises the potential of a limited studio setup. Bleak spoken word lyrics only serving to bolster the narrative storytelling, ‘Sad Fog’ paints a vivid picture of hardships endured, while ‘Fog Power’ resembles the inner dialogue of a man teetering at the edge of sanity. Think corrosive, industrial fug and rugged, tape-damaged torque. Through ‘No Fog’s menacing machine funk to the visceral, downbeat sleaze of ‘Freaks’ and queasy, Wolfenstein-sampling 'Eisenfaust’, the FOG MAN deals that dystopian gear in spades.

Clive From Accounts is finally back on Dirt Crew Recordings! After some excellent contributions and remixes for the highly acclaimed New York based “Razor-N-Tape” imprint, he graced us again with three new gems that show the great diversity in his productions. Since his first “Cooking the Books EP” in 2021 and the follow up “Pearls EP” in 2022 he has continued to build a strong following of fans, so we know for sure a lot of you have been waiting on new tracks by him.

The uplifting opener “That Rhythm” is a smooth deep house roller with chopped up dusty samples, inspired by the US and French masters but with a heavy UK sub bass added. Following up is the wonderfully crafted “Maceo”, a groovy instrumental jazz funk workout built around the genius of The JBs legends Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker. 

Closing out this new EP is the acid laden and also title track “Clive by Night”, deep and lush house music that we love him for since his first release on our label, here he’s finding joy in deep evolving repetition, it’s an ode to the 303 and Xpander. Best played at night. 

Get in these 3 new hitters from Clive now, we are looking forward to hear these played out in dark clubs and wide open fields this late summer and golden fall. Enjoy!
