Mission: To foster a vibrant and prolific performing arts community around shared resources of space and talent, to increase stability and growth within the artistic community, and to help broaden public access to the performing arts.

Since 2009, EtM has administered the EtM Con Edison Composers’ Residency, a program which grew out of our 2008 study, “Where Can We Work?” (PDF).

This annual residency is open to New York City composers. Eight composers, chosen by a panel of music professionals, receive a stipend and three months of free suitable workspace in a cultural or community facility. Each composer must present or conduct a public program in cooperation with the host facility.

For 2014-15, eight NYC-based composers will take residence in these five host facilities:

Brooklyn Youth Chorus Academy, Brooklyn
Bloomingdale School of Music, Manhattan
The Filomen M. D’Agostino Greenberg Music School at Lighthouse Guild International, Manhattan
Turtle Bay Music School, Manhattan
Flushing Town Hall, Queens

2014 marks EtM’s first time working with The Filomen M. D’Agostino Greenberg Music School at Lighthouse Guild International. Located on East 59th Street it is one of the only buildings in the United States specifically planned to integrate the needs of people of all ages who have a broad range of vision, hearing and mobility impairment and is designed to satisfy, and in many cases exceed, the recommendations of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Applicants for the 2016 residency will be available in the Spring.

Second Inversion is a music project dedicated to rethinking classical music. The project is built on a foundation of classical music with intent to explore the vast range of music in and beyond the genre. It curates music for listeners who find inspiration in a wide variety of genres, delivering a diverse, rich, and user-centered listening experience. The project also seeks guidance from the Northwest arts community and from experts known for their artistic innovation.

Annika Socolofsky is a composer and avant folk vocalist. Described as “unbearably moving” (Gramophone) and “just the right balance between edgy precision and freewheeling exuberance” (The Guardian), her music erupts from the embodied power of the human voice and is communicated through mediums ranging from orchestral and operatic works to unaccompanied folk ballads. She is Assistant Professor of Composition at the University of Colorado Boulder and holds her PhD in Composition from Princeton University.
