Based in Berlin Tom is a producer and DJ who has worked hard behind the scenes for many years – establishing his sound and what electronic music means to him.

At the tail end of last year he released his debut EP on Temperamental Club Sound – a fun filled record destined to wow on the dancefloor which featured euphoric breaks, acid house, piano riffs and uplifting melodies.

It featured all the wild, hedonistic sounds which typically soundtrack a big night out. Party music with a distinct and unique twist.
 
We invited Tom to deliver a mixtape which he felt represents his own approach to dance music and that built for clubs.

What he’s turned in is an exquisite two hour accumulation of fast paced, groove focussed house which nods to the early days of Chicago and even the past discotheques of New York.

Tom: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

Mix #387 in our series comes from Bristol based dj & producer, Red Rack'em. Red Rack'em has previously released on Wolf Music & Innervisions. He has run Bergerac records since 2010 where he has also released on.

Red Rack'em had this to say about the mix..
"This mix is completely inspired by the life changing experience of living in Berlin between 2011-18. I was lucky enough to play in the city nearly every month for almost 8 years at a variety of great venues and I took full advantage of the adventurous set times I was often given. I was often booked to play the morning sets, which was amazing as I didn't have the pressure of the peak time set and I could really experiment in clubs with crowds who danced until midday and with powerful sound systems which made the records sound even better. I was able to play at a wide range of clubs as a DJ in Berlin because I could play most shades of house, techno (but not the super hard stuff), broken beat, disco, UKG stuff, jazzy stuff and more. This was actually an asset I think as I could play disco influenced stuff in the red room at Renate, the deepest house ever in the lobby at Blank or swingy raw techno and electro in the Silo at Muehle. 8 hours back to back with Franklin De Costa in the main room at Kater Holzig starting at 6am on a Sunday morning, playing in the morning after Bambounou at Chalet, warming up for Danny Wang at Renate, covering for Jazzanova at Fete De La Musique, playing the day after I arrived at Woodys birthday at Heidegluhn (there were a few untagged photos on FB after that) - the variety of DJing possible was amazing. 

I was often booked from 4-8am, 6-9am (breakfast set) or even sometimes 8-12am. I would try to have an early night - get a few hours of excited half sleep and then head to the club around 1 hour before I played. I used to turn up and people would be FUCKED but that was great as it meant they would appreciate the music more.  I would have a few rapid shots of vodka or pfeffi depending on the venue to get myself feeling a bit dizzy and begin to play. 3 hours is the standard set time in Berlin clubs which is a perfect set length for me - enough time to have a few peaks, twists and turns. Club wise, I would say this mix is inspired by playing at places like Loftus Hall circa 2012, Mothers Finest at Griessmuehle circa 2016 and of course all the times I played at About Blank back in the day. I never really had to compromise musically in Berlin - apart from playing a bit more harder and manic. Which suited me fine. 

In terms of tunes - it's vinyl only - not to be wanky - I just don't have any CDJs at home, quite a lot of it comes from Diamonds and Pearls distribution in Berlin - huge shouts to Johannes for being generous with the test pressings over the years and also some bits I picked up at the great Bikini Waxx shop in Berlin - I really like their selection there, and of course OYE records who were also my go to shop in Berlin. But yeah vibes wise, I just wanted to get down some of the more techno and jacking vibes I like. Hope you enjoy it. "

Phonica dives into a new era, or season if you will, of our long established mix series after a stomping 100th mix from London legend Erol Alkan. 
We jump into our 101st mix from one of our most recent Phonica releasee's; French born and Swiss based DJ & producer Lea Lisa. If you some how managed to miss Lea's most recent outing with us we highly recommend it. Taking inspiration from legend Mark Goddard's (aka The Truth) classic "The End", Lea's "Love To The End" is her own various takes on this 1992 UK gem!  And thus is what we see in Phonica mix 101, a crossing of time, styles and blends. Passing through elements of deep, cosmic, tech and jacking styles of house Lea Lisa shows that she shares the divine skills of legends like Kerri Chandler and Ron Trent. We have a quick chat with Lea about her recent projects and to see what she has in store for the future.

Matt Walsh’s interest in DJing and production was fostered in the late 1990′s, while he was at university and progressive house was at its peak. Fast-forward a couple of years, a new decade heralded the birth of Electroclash and with it DJ Hell’s Gigolo Records, City Rockers and Playhouse. As Matt began to develop his trademark sound of modern disco-infused electronic house and techno, an offer of a residency at East London’s seminal T-Bar club set off a chain of events that would lead to Turbo Recordings don Tiga spotting him there in 2007. He then became a long term resident of Bugged Out!
Clouded Vision is not only his production alias, but also the clear minded platform to showcase the musical talent that has caught Matt Walsh’s sights.  Clouded Vision Recordings was set up in 2009 and has since received critical acclaim by pioneering new talent from across the world, with releases from Dimitri Veimar, Remote, Remain, Dark Strands, Sebastien Tex, Eskimo Twins Markus Gibb, Morgan Hammer and Matt himself.  Matt Walsh Presents:  The Clouded Vision Experiment was voted by Mixmag as one of the top compilations of the year in 2012, with volume 2 set to hit the shelves in the summer of 2014.

Under his own name, Matt’s original material has been described as techno with a propulsive and percussive energy, never afraid to take risks. “I try to move beyond the safer techno & house sounds and hopefully create something a bit different. It’s important to me to stay true to what I grew up with and I think that comes through in my productions, the EBM and new wave sound.”  

Matt has released material on Turbo Recordings and Kill The DJ, as well as his own label, and has recently remixed Daniel Avery, forthcoming on Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound.  Expect a slew of remixes in early 2014, followed by original material and a second Clouded Vision Experiment album in early summer. The limited edition mixed compilation CD and download will contain all unreleased and exclusive tracks from new and exciting artists from the label.
