'Believe in Things' is centred around the piano, exploring textures and colours which depict the beauty in simple things and the relationship between earth, nature and space. Born out of the challenges society has faced as a result of Covid-19, 'Believe in Things' is a real-time documentation of the hope, discovery and uncertainty experienced this year. The improvised piano tells a story of believing in the unimaginable and unearthing the extraordinary. The songs portray a sense of determination and optimism for a better future.

‘Awkward’, the debut single from the project, as its name suggests, was created in a way that captures the awkward interactions of society and searches for solutions – described by Matt himself as “hopeful, pensive & forward-looking”. The track benefits from catchy melodies, analogue synths and the smooth trumpet and flugelhorn of Aaron Wood.

“Growing up in Manchester, I was surrounded by MCs, rappers and musicians who were writing, recording and performing hip hop and grime. I began producing and making beats and DJ’ed in multiple clubs across the UK including having a residency at the legendary Sankeys in Manchester. I was enveloped by loads of different cultures which all fed into the music I was making. Producing unlocked my obsession with keys and I began exploring the works of jazz greats such as Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock and Ahmad Jamal. My early musical experiences and exploration of jazz have blended and laid the foundations of my sound today, which is portrayed in my debut EP Believe in Things.”

Matt Wilde is a Mancunian keyboardist and producer, whose music blends jazz-inspired keys, rich harmonies and pocketed drums. Taking inspiration from jazz greats such as Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock, Matt has performed and produced for a range of artists such as PROSE (Virgin Records) and Secret Night Gang (Brownswood), with performances at major venues and festivals including Parklife, Leeds & Reading and the Great Escape.

Matt is rapidly becoming one of the artists to look out for in 2021 amongst the resurgence of jazz and hip hop influenced music in the UK.

'Dilla Impresses Me’ encapsulates Matt’s distinct approach to jazz and hip hop fusion. The track pays homage to Dilla’s unique off the grid groove which he discovered as a teenager after listening to Dilla on repeat. This was a catalyst for Matt’s obsession with jazz as he heard new perspectives, layers and textures in Dilla’s music which developed like characters in a story. This cyclical effect is revealed in Matt’s new track through the straightforward piano, hazy trombone, grounded bass and pocketed drums.

Dilla Impresses Me

'Remote Planet' is a fusion of jazz & hip-hop which looks at life from a different perspective. The ascending piano melodies and analogue synths lift the tune like the weightlessness of space, whilst Rosie Turton's trombone provides a grounded melodic counterpoint alongside Oscar Ogden's pocketed drums and Matt Wilde's rich piano chords.

Remote Planet

Matt returns for his first release of 2022, joining forces with French duo Kissamilé to explore the fusion between jazz and hip-hop on ‘Better Worlds’, out now on all platforms with Root Records via DeepMatter. 

The collaboration began with a piano theme which evolved as the artists exchanged ideas, inspired by hope for a better world with collaboration, creativity and sustainability at its heart.

A percussive and melodic cascading piano solo is at the heart of the track, alongside a stunning jazz-inspired guitar solo that rounds off the track.

Better Worlds ft. Kissamilé

Manchester-based keyboardist and producer Matt Wilde continues his strong start to 2022 with his second single of the year ‘Inner Peace’ which sees him teaming up with multi-instrumentalist and producer, Natty Reeves.

Throughout the track Natty’s Spanish guitar and Matt’s piano effortlessly interweave to create the harmonic richness of the track, bringing a new outlook to jazz collaboration. As the track develops, the direction of the music changes through raw improvisations from Natty, and then Matt, with synth textures interplaying to create a foundation for the rest of the track to shine.

Following support from the likes of Jamie Cullum (BBCR2), Jazz FM & more, Manchester keyboardist, composer and producer Matt Wilde steps up with his debut physical release, having spent much of his early years laying the foundations of his musical development through workshops at Band on the Wall.

A truly feel-good slice of musical goodness centred around Matt’s lyrical, virtuosic and jazz-leaning keys, ‘Every Story / Pivot’ delivers wondrous blends of hip-hop and jazz elements.

Both Every Story and Pivot depict a reflection. As put by Matt, “Everyone has their own story; they have something unique to share with the world which encapsulates the highs and lows of their individual lives, and that can resonate with other human beings. By taking the time to listen to every story from different perspectives, we can hear voices that are unheard and undervalued.”

On Pivot, Matt says, “Our lives pivot between different perspectives and moments that can change the direction we’re travelling in. Unexpected shifts of reality and emotion. Pivot depicts the contrast between moments of stillness and moments of energy”

Nostalgia

Mancunian pianist, composer, and producer Matt Wilde returns with 'Smile Today' – an uplifting new single with a feel-good groove, serving as a reminder to smile and the benefits of doing so.

A playful back-and-forth between upright piano and trumpet mirrors the positive feedback loop we experience when we smile – lifting moods and, according to some studies, even boosting physical health. “This tune came from a moment where I needed that,” Matt explains. “I just wanted to make something that was light, kind… Something that says: Hey, I know things are a lot, but maybe just smile today. Even for a bit”.

The track was recorded in close collaboration with trumpeter and composer Aaron Wood, improvising upright piano and trumpet over intricately programmed beats to capture the spontaneity that makes jazz feel alive, but with the forward-facing touch of Ableton live production.

Guided by values of accessibility and creativity, Matt has become a key voice in the UK’s boundary-pushing jazz and beats scene. His music has been championed by the likes of BBC Radio 1, Jamie Cullum and Soweto Kinch (BBC Radio 2), ‘Round Midnight (BBC Radio 3), and across BBC 6 Music, Jazz FM and Worldwide FM. He has performed headline shows at Band on the Wall (Manchester) and The Lower Third (London) and showcased his music at Brick Lane Jazz Festival and London’s iconic Jazz Café.
