This mix is something I've been wanting to do for a very long time: A meditative and contemplative ambient journey. Something that allows me to access deeper parts of my being, and helps get into the "flow" state. I assembled 5 hours worth of my favorite ambient electronica, and tested it 4-5 times in full before deciding it was ready for release into the world.

Spanning from 1969 (Terry Riley - A Rainbow in Curved Air) to Present, there's some quite special musical moments in here. I hope you enjoy it to spending time with a loved one, going about your day, going for a long drive or just about anything else your heart desires. My wish is for this mix to inspire moments of deep stillness, while revealing our true nature to ourselves.

The Black Coffee afterparty was one for the books. For this set, I had my good friend James Medina playing live drums with me in this set and loved the new layers of percussion who brought into the mix. I had some hesitations about posting this mix as there were some feedback issues from the mic'ed drums that made they're way into the recording. After giving it a re-listen, I decided to embrace the imperfections of the recording and put it out anyway! 

Grateful to all who got to come out (for my birthday) and dance all around us in what was very likely one of the best looking zodiac productions we ever put together!

The first signs of drizzle occured during this set for my Oakland friends' camp, Alight Market and little did we know it would be our last dry night on the playa...this was a really fun set to play with absolutely no plan going in and simply being inspired to start where I did based off of where my friend https://soundcloud.com/ltwhp had taken us in the hour prior.

For this set, we embark on a 3 hour journey of downtempo, chillout, tripout, and experimental vibes from artists: Art of Noise, Spacetime Continuum, Single Cell Orchestra, Orbital, The Orb, Aphex Twin, and various badorb releases.

Something a little different for ya.  Me at my moodiest.  In more recent years I apply tags to my tracks of different vibes so that I can organize my massive music collection better.  One of the biggest categories is 'Moody.'  

Of course a lot of people going out on Friday and Saturday night to my gigs are out to celebrate, so this category doesn't get as much play live as more funky upbeat rhythms.  As such it's somewhat underrepresented on my Soundcloud.

Well not anymore :). I'm dedicated to releasing more sets this year and I see this one as the start of a series.  Welcome to Ben Annand Moody AF :). 

The opener of this series is an opening set I played on a Sunday night from 9-11pm. It's actually just the first hour, 9-10.  It's ok to be moody when people are settling in :). It was also November just after the time change and loss of light... the beginning of the moody season in Eugene :)

An opening set is always interesting musically (or should be) because you get to start from scratch, and set the tone for the whole night.  So it's always a set that should be played with intention.

In this particular case, I was in a sensitive space because I had taken some really nasty criticism from the organizer of an event recently before.  I won't go into detail but it was very tactlessly and cruelly delivered.  So of course that affected my headspace both in terms of insecurity, and in terms of wanting to deliver a great set since I didn't entirely disagree with the criticism so much as I was hurt by the tone from a supposed friend.

So why am I telling you this?  Because this set is moody as fuck!  It opens with a lush vocal track that really spoke to me when my marriage suddenly went up into smoke. I find this track really intense so I haven't played it much but at home.   

The mix stays deep and moody, gradually building energy then wavering then building.  It's super trippy, a little dark/melancholy for me, but still house and totally danceable of course :)

So with all that said, I hope you enjoy this one and I will keep em coming!

Isaiah Martin @ Abracadabra Festival 2.0

Matt Xavier is a professional psychedelic DJ, gestalt therapist, psychedelic counselor, guide and integration specialist. Since 1993, his contribution to the global electronic music culture has been undeniably psychedelic. In the early 90's he co-founded New York City's first and foremost psychedelic trance company, Tsunami Productions, where he served as resident DJ and music director until the turn of the millennium. Following his departure from the psy-trance format, he began producing deep techno, house and progressive under the moniker "Gruvhaus", with releases & remixes appearing on such labels as Fabric, Release Records, Polyester Music, Fugu and Chug Records. In 2005, he founded the NYC techno-house music imprint Railyard Recordings which saw releases and remixes from such international techno legends as Joel Mull, Cari Lekebusch, Alexi Delano, Donato Dozzy and Mathew Jonson. While residing in Los Angeles, Matt held the role of resident DJ and music director at Compression, The Mor Bar and Subtract Music. His brand of psychedelic house, trippy techno and hypnotic ambient/chillout has appeared at such events and venues as Lightning in a Bottle, Moontribe, Symbiosis, Giant, Spundae, Avalon, Vanguard, 1015 Folsom, Circus Disco, King King and Burning Man. Matt’s current focus is providing effective, clinical, guided psychedelic therapy sessions for clients seeking mental or spiritual healing through the safe and intentional use of psychedelic medicines.
