Founded by french artists @da-iguana & @dokomodo, Reptilian Business Records aims to be an independent label of hybrid music, with the goal of promoting the fusion of electronic rhythms, organic textures, sound design and traditional influences, through the vision of local and international artists of all kinds. From tribal house to UK dubstep, from psychedelic cumbia to dark disco, from slow trance to indie dance, everything that purrs and reflects its scales, which squeaks and waves at the same time: reptilian music.

This VA puts the spotlight on 8 countries, represented by twenty artists from radically different scenes, from the parisian organic underground to the dubstep soundsystem scene of Brooklyn, to the downtempo and schnekno of Berlin and Frankfurt, swiss lo-fi, japanese experimental, or slow house drawn from brazilian forests, not to mention the participation of locals from the french southwest who offer organic jungle, dark electro or tribal slow trance... A musical diversity which has a common denominator love for psychedelia, distortion, depth of bass and sharp rhythms like the claws of an arboreal monitor lizard.

Guaraci - Avalaska

Sometimes the most unexpected sounds lead to the most intriguing creations.  For this track, it all started with a field recording from my trip to Vietnam – a simple, unassuming sound that sparked a cascade of ideas. It reminded me of the raw, unfiltered experiences of travel, where every sound tells a story. Like that, this recording set the tone for the entire piece.

The creative process took a turn when I integrated this unique Vietnamese vocal, pushing it through auto-tune to create an almost artificial sound. This blend of the organic and the synthetic is what made it really stand out for me.

So this track became an example of the unexpected turns in the creative process. It's about embracing the unknown and finding beauty in the unplanned.

With this new Botanas, Jiony begins a new stage of his musical career, presenting the alias Brandom Salazar to give life to ideas that travel through the terrain of the Latin sound, but with a unique touch that does not fit conventional labels. In the words of the artist himself: “With these two tracks I want to inaugurate a new cool alias for those ideas that go more towards the side of the Latin sound”.
The EP begins with “Piñata vacía”, a track that moves away from traditional structures and defies rhythmic categorization. It's a modern ballad of sorts, interweaving instruments that evoke Latin rhythms, but with a fusion so free that it's hard to pigeonhole it into a single style. The ambiguity of its rhythm reflects the experimentation and authenticity of Jiony, who has fun playing with the sonic possibilities without worrying about meeting the expectations of the genre.
The second track, “De la que no pica”, has a more defined form and flows along the paths of cumbia, although with a bass that takes some liberties, leading us at times to a flavor closer to salsa. “It's the kind that doesn't sting,” says Jiony, referring to that softer, more accessible salsa, but equally loaded with flavor and energy.

With this Botanas, Jiony invites us to enjoy his most authentic and experimental side, to dance without prejudice and to let ourselves be carried away by the Latin sounds that inspire him, but with a fresh vision that goes beyond the expected. Brandom Salazar has arrived to represent the unexpected, the cool and the irreverent.

Fulani features chants from the Fulani (Fulbe) people, closer from the Wodaabe tribe from Nigeria, that still nowadays lives as nomadic cattle sheperds. 

Hadza features a stringed bow and some occasional vocals from the Hadza people from Tanzania. The Hadza, who live as hunters and gatherers until today, hunt mainly with bows and arrows, as seen on the cover. The bow which they use for killing can be used as a musical bow aswell, played with the mouth or a stick. In this archaic form, it belongs to the oldest musical instruments in known history. In this case a resonator has been added, probably a calabash, to make the bow resonate louder.

The two tracks come from a series which’s work titles where “Stur”, “Stur2” and “Stur3”, which resemble the way of producing quite well: smacking drums, a dirty sample and a simple sinewave subbass. This rough and reduced way of producing led me to this very dry and abstract songs, which I feel have and strong, present and livley drive.

The name Djouma was inspired by a sample in the mentioned third track which is not on the EP, but appears to be a male firstname. So at this point: shout out to all them Djoumas out there! Y'all have a cool name!

Welcome to the thirteenth TELECAST. A series of podcasts that'll be released mostly monthly. With the humble aim of combining the music I find, love and want to share into a set for everyone to enjoy. Hopefully, it will become your go-to place for a fix of good music.

After thirteen Telecasts a sort of pattern has emerged. SoundCloud gives me some insight so I can make an educated guess as to what happens when I post music. Turns out that the way I structure the music in the Telecasts predicts how well it will do in terms of plays. Opening tracks, for instance, are a good indication of how good it’ll perform.

It’s actually really cool to see that with N=12, some simple data analysis and a good listen, you can predict what will happen when you make a new Telecast. And thus you can predict that it’ll provide you with something you will like as a listener. And in turn, that’ll get me more repeated clicks and plays.

So for this lucky number Thirteen, I realized again that it’s not about the numbers, but about what I share with you. I picked these tracks not so that it would be easy to listen to and to understand as that catchy guitar rife, but instead give you something to chew on while you’re drifting off into nothingness.

So here are my picks of the month: Jascha Hagen made a new EP on Laut & Luise which is highly recommended. Alan Watts shows up again in a track from the great new album by Peter Power. It’s awfully cliche, but it’s so good that I buy it every time. It’s just super true. Afterward, it shifts sharply to a more clubby tone. Eventually, it slows down again with a good dose of feel-good sounds towards the end.

And a big shoutout to the @heimlichaufsc crew! What a nice compilation you guys made again!

As music lovers, we all asked ourselves at least once what music is about. What is its function? How did it become such an important component of our lives? Maguera (https://soundcloud.com/maguera) questioned himself about it too, and he concluded that for him it is all about communication and profound emotions. This talented Italo-Danish composer, musician, and electronic producer believes that music is the strongest medium available to reach people, and he employed it to send out a call to self-reflection to our listeners and to himself. In fact, he told us of his thoughts about the decreasing ability of the people to feel empathy and how this is affecting our essence. This is the main theme of the splendid mix he recorded for UCR. His concern towards the rising narcissism and egomania, as well as his hope for an imminent change of direction, drove the artist in the recording of the mix. It’s possibly the duel between these controversial strong emotions that makes this mix so beautifully heterogeneous, with melancholic notes alternating with gleeful and dreamy moments. The set consists mostly of Maguera’s own productions played live, which the artist blended masterfully with others’ tracks, and it’s meant to stimulate our capability to travel through our thoughts and feelings about empathy. Despite his elusiveness and humbleness, Maguera has made great display of the communicative power of his sound and of his moral depth. We at UCR are delighted to share his set with our listeners and welcome his call to self-reflection.
