Live recording of my warm-up set (9.45pm - 11.15pm, Saturday 11 January) for the charity edition of “Refuge”, the bi-monthly party at The Vault (Singapore), in aid of EmancipAsia and Lotus Culture, two Singapore-based not for profit organisations whose mission is to combat illegal human trafficking with a focus on the Asia-Pacific Region.

Human trafficking is a crime against humanity and the UN reports that 25 million people are trafficked globally each year for a multitude of purposes including sexual exploitation, domestic servitude and for forced and exploitative labour. This is modern-day slavery and it is happening everywhere around us.

Big thanks to everyone who came out to party and support the causes -- a fantastic total of $4365 in donations was raised during the evening!

Live At The Vault - 11 January 2014

Born in Singapore to a family of musicians and lovers of jazz and classical music, from a young age Maurice developed a curiosity for musical forms that stir the senses and tell a story. His time spent in London as a promoter for Ben Watt’s Buzzin’ Fly Records kick-started his journey as a DJ more than 10 years ago. 

Over the years Maurice has quietly established himself in Singapore's underground music scene and around South-East Asia through his very own Re:fuge club nights in Singapore, festival appearances at Epizode (Vietnam), Wonderfruit and Karma Kastle (Thailand) and performances alongside some of the world's leading House & Techno names including Dixon, Mano Le Tough, Kristian Beyer (Âme), Roman Flügel, Ata, Marcus Worgull, The Drifter, Fort Romeau, Aera, Matthias Schöber, Love Over Entropy and &ME. 

Armed with a sound that marries deep and melodic house with tough and moody techno, Maurice is a believer that electronic music is an open platform, without limits on who or what it may connect to. His openness to perform DJ sets that embrace diversity across musical styles with house & techno as the connector, is what drives his constant devotion to the craft of DJing today and into the future.

The passion for music transcends genres and cultures and this is what happens when you put music junkies- Maurice Simon and Frederick Yao together. Having been introduced to electronic music in the late 90s, theseblokes only got together as The Electric Ambassadors (TEA) in late 2010.

Maurice who was studying in London in the early 2000s, was good mates with Ben Watts (EBTG) and had his daily dosage of deep house and soulful house fix with his posse.  Frederick was then playing in different bars and clubs in Melbourne in the early 2000s so that he could have enough money for tuition. With that in mind, he was exposed to a spectrum of sounds- from Drum and Bass, to Funky House, Electro House and Trance and participated and came in 2nd place for the Future DJ Competition held in Melbourne in 2002.

Born to a household of musicians, both Maurice and Frederick developed a keen ear for unique sounds coupled with characteristics of their own individual styles. And after playing out individually at Clubs around the world (Q Bar-Bali, The Lounge-Melbourne, Double 6-Bali, Ministry of Sound-Singapore, Velvet Underground-Singapore,  Revolver-Melbourne, Logo- Shanghai, W Hotel, The White Rabbit, Phuture- Zouk Singapore, Kryal Castle- Melbourne), the duo was asked to play together for a Full Moon Party on a beach and that was where The Electric Ambassadors came about.

With a humble knowledge of different styles of music, there were many musicians who influenced TEA sound. From Osunlade, Todd Terje, Anja Schneider, to Maya Jane Coles, Daniel Bortz, Alan Fitzpatrick, The Martinez Brothers and the list goes on....and on.

There is no genre to term their style when TEA plays but one can safely say that they will delve into the deep, the dark, the tech, with layers of melodic and percussion instruments coupled with interesting acappellas of the then and now.
