Etcetera w/ Monibi #24 - Talk with Acid Maria (THF Radio, Berlin)

Monibi is a club DJ, radio host, and music producer, based in Berlin. Born in France, former Scottish resident, adopted German.
Not only do UK-centric bass music and house music often shine in Monibi's DJ sets. She also takes inspiration from the old-school NY open-format school of DJing: she joins the dots of the dance music spectrum favouring vibe over genre dogmatism.
Her versatile and forward-thinking DJ style was born in the kraut-techno-infused Cologne scene where she was playing at Gewölbe, Studio 672 / Jaki, Acephale, Golzheim, Cologne institution techno label Kompakt's line-ups and C/O Pop. Since moving to Berlin her sets have been heard on CTM Vorspiel, Hör Berlin, WDR Cosmo, United We Stream x Arte.

Through her radio endeavours she delivered strong DJ-sets championing percussive and underground music and leftfield sensitivities for Red Light Radio Amsterdam, WDR Cosmo, Rinse France, Radio 8000, Mutant Radio, to name a few.
Her new radio home is THF radio Berlin where she now co-curates the radio program, contributes to community development projects. She hosts her monthly radio show “Etc w/ Monibi”, featuring interviews of role-model artists and their non-male-heteronormative narratives of the electronic music scene.
She's been awarded a Berlin Music Board scholarship in 2021 and is currently working on new music. She released her debut EP in 2019 and subsequent single via the Cologne-based, experimental & kraut-loving label and artist collective baumusik. She's remixed tracks for various artists.

Love Around

The forest stretched for miles and miles, the vibrant green ferns stood to attention, sheltering the untouched woodland below. It housed all manner of animals and plant life; squirrels jumped from tree-to-tree and insects buzzed in unison, while herds of deer leaped between trunks, finding a perfect resting spot to waste the day away. It was a magical place to live, one unspoiled by the greed of mankind. Human civilisation was nowhere to be found and that's the way its inhabitants hoped it would stay.

Monibi is a lover of all things bass. The French producer and DJ cut her teeth playing the DJ circuit in Cologne, the city where she also worked as co-curator for DIY label and collective Baumusik, before recently settling in the German capital. This label was the home of her first release back in 2019, and now three years on she's gearing up for her sophomore EP coming out via Barcelona's Diffuse Reality. Forest Love showcases Monibi's versatility over five tracks, the bass is omnipresent but each cut has its own distinct flavour. Recorded during lockdown, the release fuses different influences which take us on a trip through atmospheric dub-wise rhythms, anthemic 90s deep house, tech rollers and emotive electro.

PREMIERE: Monibi - New World [Diffuse Reality Records]

Monibi is a French DJ, producer and radio host. Her DJ sets and music productions are known for their versatility, weaving Bass & Leftfield House together with elements from the broader dance music spectrum.

She earned her DJ stripes in Cologne, while actively co-curating the DIY label & artist collective Baumusik. The past few years have seen Monibi appear on quite a few prestigious line-ups such as C/O Pop, CTM Vorspiel, United We Stream x Arte and Kompakt's club nights, to name only a few.

Always eager to present eclectic tracks beyond the rave orbit, she has played, among others, for Rinse France, Mutant Radio and Hör Berlin.  After relocating to the German capital, the keen radio host followed up on her Red Light Radio residency with a monthly show - 'Etcetera with Monibi', on THF Radio – a community based project located on the grounds of the former Tempelhof airport.

Forest Love EP is Monibi's second stand-alone release. The 5-trackeris coming out via Diffuse Reality, a Barcelona-based label & party promoter founded in 2013. The imprint's catalog dabs
through a broad variety of styles - from Acid, IDM and Techno to Electro, Breakbeat, Downtempo and Ambient. 

Monibi's genre bending contribution is a feat born from adversity, as it was produced during thespring of 2021. She'd only just moved to Berlin when the pandemic-related hiatus suddenly paralyzed the whole cultural industry, prompting her to try and make the best out the forced break. Music production helped re-creating a sense of stability: it provided both a creative routine, and a welcomed emotional outlet. Forest Love EP tangles introspective atmospheric constructions with energetic rhythm patterns. While resolutely stepping away from a classic 4/4 focus, Monibi managed to create a sensible musical trip equally enjoyable from the relaxed confines of an apartment as on a club dance floor. 

The EP opens on a slightly melancholic mood. 'Forest Love' is an atmospheric, dubby excursion infused with a vibrant bass.
The second track, 'Lisbon Weather Report' slowly unfolds its trance-inducing spell. The skillfully crafted progression combines a jerky Afro-Cuban rhythm with hypnotic bass meanders and a hint
of future bleep . 'New World' is a deep house adjacent tune peppered with alien bass and pads. The track's hypnotic grooves make for a kick-ass DJ tool. 'The First Lady Of Detroit Said' is Monibi's personal tribute to Kelli Hand's unmatched legacy. It was composed following the announcement of K-Hand's death in August 2021. The
track – almost a solemn mantra, is built around an inspirational voice sample and infused with emo-strings, as well as bitter-sweet futuristic elements. The Deep House-leaning 'Love Around' is a nod to another legendary music diva. The track's arp bass and big toms give it the feel of a 90's dance anthem.

The Desi Hour - Monibi - 15 Nov 2023

To wrap up the year, W133 has put together its second Various Artist release featuring a diverse lineup of emerging and established artists. 

Kicking off the EP is the French producer Monibi, offering a groovy and bass-heavy breakbeat track titled "Mahsa Amini." This track serves as a call to fight for women's rights, not only in Iran but around the world.

On A2, San Francisco-based Kudeki showcases her love for tripped-out Techno with "Cursive." This mesmerizing track, featuring a relentless bassline and a 4/4 kick, creates a spooky atmosphere.

On the flip side, label head Pino Peña teams up with samwho from Rotterdam to deliver a percussive power workout. "Jacarandas," named after the purple trees in CDMX, definitely has those Latin American vibes and rhythms that will get you moving.

For the closer of the EP, speed dembow heavyweight Siu Mata delivers a fast-hitting tribal bomb called "Dubiquity," which takes you on a journey through dramatic pads and spaced-out percussions.

The release is, as always, complemented by pictures taken by analogue photographer Freya Gerz and is available on vinyl with fully printed cover sleeves as well as digitally.

Today we proudly present two heavyweights of the Berlin bass scene! 

You are in for a full 3 hour live DJ recording from the B2B of Monibi and Dangermami, who rocked the floor at a PLASMA party at RSO last year. Both DJs are not only known and loved for their massive selections in the booth, but have also made an important contribution to the Berlin scene off the dance floor. With Femme Bass Mafia, Dangermami has not only founded THE indispensable mentoring programme when it comes to revitalising UK and breakbeat styles in our city but also build a florishing international network of artists based on that. Similarly, Monibi, one of the FBM mentors, regularly hosts music technology workshops, opening up access and participation to the music industry, while showcasing her eclectic approach to murky bass music, beat science and anything else loosely related to the hardcore continuum spectrum at her residency at Refuge Worldwide.

Monibi is a French DJ, radio host, and producer based in Berlin. 
“Corona ate my dollaz”, an electro-bass infused roller, is Monibi’s first single since her debut EP “Faux Pas” released in 2019 on Cologne collective-label baumusik. Former Red Light Radio Amsterdam resident, she now hosts her monthly radio show “Etcetera” on community radio THF in Berlin.
