Le Carousel is Phil Kieran's latest LP, which is great, it was a pleasure to work with this track, and all the better because I decided I was going to do something weird with it! The lovely pads and vocals provided the backbone for my remix, and I just tried to accentuate these with a long ambient build.

The track would probably work better just with this ambient part and no more, but I decided to add on some sort of odd drop at the end, where it goes all hectic with lots of double timed randomised beats. To continue with the unexpected theme I went for another extended build to total distortion, climaxing in nothingness!

It's probably not the easiest track to fit into a set unless you just use the ambient part, but it's always nice to just let go and mess around with a track without worrying about how it might function outside of what you feel you want to do musically at the time.

Le Carousel - Lost Years - Max Cooper Remix

This track is about having a walk on a nice sunny day in the countryside, all is well and good, until you accidentally fall off a cliff. We chose the title in Deutsch due to the kick focused poundingness rhythmically.

It was a fun track as I decided I'd let loose, and you might notice, particularly towards the end it gets pretty loose! But luckily Tom's beautiful 5 bar piano riff is there to anchor things at either end, and hopefully save you from the death by cliff (you might notice it's a pain to mix with those 5 bar loops though).

So a bit of background - Tom Hodge is a great pianist and composer who I met recently, and we've been working on lots of interesting things. This is the most extreme in terms of the noise levels really, we've done some nice stuff too, as we're not planning on starting a death metal band just yet.

Lot's more to hear from this collaboration with the release out on Monday 28th on Fields + an amazing remix from Petrels of the A-side track (Fragments of Self) + an amazing video for the A-side by Nick Cobby, which we're all really excited about!

Von Der Klippe Fallen - with Tom Hodge - FIELDS

This track started with some interesting strings recordings Tom made, where he arranged the instruments in terms of their frequency range, from the lowest in the centre to the highest on the edges. He provided my with a few unused recordings of this session and I sort of brutalised them, in as much as the end result sounds nothing at all like the original recordings. I just liked the timbre and texture that occurred when I cut them up, with each hit being a complex mixture of chords, one bleeding into the other so that a lot of the samples are quite impure melodically.

It just turned into an experiment of what I could do with these odd melodic units, or quanta of the original tentet, hence the name - Quantet. In the end I went for a very simple stripped back approach, nothing too unexpected or complex in this one, but hopefully a nice mood, that was the aim anyway.

This track is released 4th April on Traum on vinyl and digital as part of the Metaphysical EP. It's quite heavy on the effects, with a long wierd noise intro just for the craic! I've been starting quite a few sets with it recently, but if you want to mix it I guess you just have to start a couple of minutes in.

I had a modern classical/electronica mix from a friend (JamBon) which I had been listening to a lot, and after a weekend away the original of this track was really stuck in my head. At some point I clicked that it sounded just like the style of another friend - Hiatus, and on checking, it was him! So I got straight on email to him asking if I could have the parts, and I even got started on the remix before they arrived by buying the mp3 and starting to lay some ideas around that - When it's on I find it's best to go with it. It was a really enjoyable remix to do given how beautiful the original parts are, my mix is quite similar really, as I couldn't improve on it melodically, I've just tried to add some of my own flavour and twists.

Hiatus - Third - Max Cooper Remix

This is one of those tracks that seems to hold a lot of memories for people I think, having been a significant mainstream track when it was released in 2002, and also a beautiful piece of music by any standards - it's one of those ones you may not remember from the name, but when you listen the riff and vocal (by none other than Hafdis Huld) it's unmistakable. It even reached no. 49 in the UK charts according to Wikipedia, so I'm officially remixing pop music now (sort of). As with some of my other recent remixes, there was no need (and I probably would have found it impossible anyway) to improve on the track melodically, as it's pretty close to perfection in that sense. I just tried to update the style of it, with some glitchy detailed drums, a sort of dubstep-ish influenced beat structure, a long evolving build throughout, and some distortion. This is being released on the legendary Skint records too, which I'm quite excited about.

I was pretty frustrated when I wrote this track, because I was working on the EP for Traum and I couldn't seem to make anything "big" enough....So this is what happened! There is none of the details or intricacies that I usually try to make, instead I stripped the track back completely, and focused only on a small number of key elements which I tried to make as big and nasty as possible, hence why I called it Raw. It will be released in April, vinyl presales already available.

Max Cooper - Raw (preview)

This is the next track from my new EP coming out next month on Traum. I'm not quite sure how to place this one, it seems to split opinions, personally it's my least favourite track from the new EP, but the label liked it best and wanted it as the Aside. It seems to work well when I play it at out at least, it will be interesting to see how it goes down now with the first preview clip.

Max Cooper - Epitaphy (preview)

For this one I wanted to make something soft and deep and enveloping, but still with that techno compatibility, so I went with a simple rhythmical structure and long drawn out pads and chords, with some singing of single notes which I layered on top of each other to make some sort of vocal texture.

For this track I wanted to combine simplicity and complexity, so I went for a simple broken beat structure and bassline, and then used lots of Max for Live shenanigans to modulate the drums and hats and vocals in an interesting way, playing with psychoacoustics and detail as much as I could. It's a bit of a weird one, but I've been playing it out a lot and it seems to work!

This is the A2 track from my new vinyl on Traum Schallpatten - It's a restrained melodic track which I tried to keep pure to it's concept, which was when I was sitting in my studio in Autumn, looking out the windows at the trees and nature which was clouded in mist. It had a really nice atmosphere which I tried to capture.

I'll be closing the Origin stage at Glade this year - 17 June 2012, which I'm really looking forward to, so when they asked if I'd like to provide a podcast for the festival I jumped right on it. This podcast will be very different from my set on the day, that will include all my favourite stuff from over the years, while this set is more of a preview and demo of my recent productions. My latest Egomodal EP on Traum features heavily, along with some recent remixes of Agoria, FC Kahuna and Phil Kieran which I've been playing out a lot recently. I hope you enjoy it!

Max Cooper Feat. The Slow Revolt - Only You

For my new EP on Traum I've done a couple of collaborative tracks with Nicolas Bougaieff (one of the founders of Liine). Nick had some great melodic ideas and a nice operator patch which we used to build two tracks around. This first one, Ellipse, has lots of shuffle and a simple groove to focus attention on the meandering riff at forefront. It's a little different from my usual, a bit of an experiment, hopefully some people will like it!

The EP is about movements through different mediums, this one being about movements through walls of sound. So I've put a really simple beat structure on there with a maddeningly repetitive two note acid style riff to try and lull people into some sort of brain dead state before they hit the wall, and exit out the other side wondering what just happened. That's the idea anyway, a track of maximised contrasts, it works great in a club, maybe not so much of home listener, see what you think anyway!

Max Cooper - Walls

This is the second idea I worked on with Kathrin deBoer for the Conditions Two EP, and an attempt to make something surreal. I tried to use her voice as an instrument in the track, rather than presenting it as a normal vocal at the forefront of the mix. I used lots of Max for Live fiddling’s to mangle up her vocals into all sorts of weird noises, and then picked out some of my favourites to use in the track. Most of the noises that aren’t the drums and main synths, so pretty much all the weird noises in the track, are made from Kathrin’s voice.



The overall feeling was something soft and organic, where in addition to the unpredictability and non-loopy manner of the vocal effects, the drums also follow a loose and slightly randomised pattern, with lots of shuffle to add to the free feeling. I thought the approach made it end up sounding a bit maddening and messy, and there was also a strong feeling of space in there with the main pads, so this combined with the surrealist approach lead me to the name ‘Falling Into Recursive Space’.

Max Cooper Feat. Kathrin deBoer - Falling Into Recursive Space (clip)

It was a nice remix to work on, with some great field recordings, a lovely simple piano riff, and some looped vocal samples which all slotted nicely into the new structure I wanted to go with - something a bit more club compatible than the original, but still hopefully carrying the feeling.

I messed around with the field recordings in the Monolake Granulator a bit, to get some subtle glitch/randomness in there, but other than that I went pretty straight on the arrangement, just gradually introducing the layers and adding a new synth to punctuate the peak, and a new bassline and chord variation.

The idea with the field recording/glitched intro section was to try and make something non-melodic and a bit harsh and cold, in attempted polar contrast to the warmth of the main melodic section and enveloping bass ie I wanted try and make the bleak part emphasise and accentuate the nice part.

So, anyway, here it is, as a free download for all.

Max Cooper is an electronic composer, multi-disciplinary artist, music label founder and former scientist who has carved out a unique space in music and visual art.

He holds a PhD in computational biology at the same time as being the first contemporary electronic musician to perform at the ancient Acropolis theatre in Athens and one of the first clutch of musicians to produce in Dolby Atmos.
