Inspired by Arizona summer thunder storms, this music represents the bringing of life vesting water to the arid desert regions of the Grand Canyon State, where rain storms are celebrated. Thunder and lightning add an extra thrill of excitement... especially the ones that are loud and close!

One of my favorite synth songs when I was a kid was Popcorn by Gershon Kingsley played on a Moog synth one note at a time. Now with computer generated instruments and a composing software there are hundreds of versions of the popular 70's song all with a little variations or complete over the top remakes. I've put together a play s\list of some of my favorites that keep a little original theme as a tribute to Gershon Kingsley's "POPCORN"

Living in Arizona in the middle of the Sonoran Desert is a special treat, especially for those who like the unique variety of cacti that have adapted to the arid environment. Providing self protection from hungry animal and storing ample supply of water to sustain their  growth during the hot, dry summers. As a special treat the red fruit that is produced is a favorite the animal population. The fruit can also be made into a jam that is a delicious treat, for those willing to harvest them. This song is what I hear when I see the prickly pear cacti.

The most majestic of all the cacti is the saguaro. It can reach up to 30 feet high and weigh over 1000 pounds from the water it stores. It bares the Arizona State flower and provides living accommodations for several species of birds in the holes made by wood-peckers. They are quite amazing plants that  are only found in the Sonoran Desert region. This song is a feeble attempt to  create a sound that depicts them... If only they could dance.

Saguaro of the Sonoran Desert

Cholla (choy-ah) also known as jumping cactus, is very similar to characteristics of Velcro. Its many tiny hook like needles look like fur but don't touch, these needles grab onto skin and continue to go deeper the more you move or try to shake shake it off. Teddy Bear Cholla, is the variety that glows in the sunrise as the light reflects through its fur-like needles.

Sounds of the Sonoran Desert cacti continue with Ocotillo, a 10 ft prickly bunch of vertical sticks. They were used to create a fence similar to barbed wire but more effective in poking with its 1 inch needles.

Stubby and fat, the barrel cactus is often ignored or mistaken for a baby saguaro. There is a legend that you can survive in the desert by cutting the top of the barrel cactus and drinking the water in them. Somebody tried it, and said you would probably die trying to get it open, then only to find very little moisture inside. They do have a pretty glow in the morning sun.

Making a song about cacti in the Sonoran Desert with synths was a challenge. Expressing the beauty, grandeur, danger, with musical notes doesn't do it justice.

Impressions refers to the pressing of an inked  image onto paper to make a print. This song features a sample of a 100 year old Kelsey hand cranked printing press that has a very distinctive sound cycle. It has been handed down 4 generations and has been a showpiece at our family printing company, which was closed in 2023. It's sound will now live on forever.... in the sound  cloud.
