This is a mix I previously uploaded on NTS, made entirely from Balinese gamelan recordings. sourced by all the sounds from Balinese gamelan cassette tapes that I personally collected in Bali. I digitized the recordings and built the mix entirely from them.

I’m still getting great feedback on it, so I’m re-uploading it in high-quality WAV format.

The first part of the mix features recordings from Insitu Recordings, a label that introduces young gamelan musicians in Bali. These were recorded in the 2010s. Midway through, the mix transitions to a gamelan orchestra performance of unknown performers and an undated recording. The piece being played is Gong Kebyar, one of the most frequently performed gamelan compositions, which tells the story of Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and arts, similar to Benzaiten in Japan.

Following that is Guguritan, a style of gamelan-based storytelling primarily performed by two male singers. One sings the narrative in Balinese, while the other provides explanations as the story unfolds.

The mix closes with the soothing sounds of Rindik, a bamboo gamelan instrument known for its warm, relaxing tones.

By the way, since none of these recordings were made in a studio, most were captured outdoors. That means you might occasionally hear birds chirping or even dogs barking in the background—giving it a raw, field recording feel
