Next up we have a mix from one of LA's brightest DJ community members, Max Ellington (@berrmax). Max is an LA-based DJ with roots in Ann Arbor, MI. Through his VPN Radio show, Surrealchemistry, he has embarked on a mission to explore the power of deep and psychadelic dance music. He's also a resident DJ at the New Palm event series. Some words from Max about the mix: 

"I used this mix as an assignment to break out of a lower tempo zone I've been vibing on lately and grab some faster + most importantly weirder records from the shelf. I tried to find a balance between speed and intensity--moves to higher tempos eventually accompanied by pillowy synths and dubby basslines.. the feeling of accelerating towards a soft landing!"

Max performed a special closing set in the early morning hours at our augural Anemone party, and will be back for a frenetic and dynamic B2B2B at our upcoming gathering in collaboration with the Acid Camp family on 10/26.

"This mix envisions a dancefloor suspended in the open ocean, bobbing and rolling with the massive surface waves above and lit by dappled sunbeams reflecting off of enormous, swirling schools of fish like a living disco ball, the light and motion interrupted periodically by the slow, looming silhouettes of whales and manta rays. New Palm 12: Max Ellington

Max centers his mix on a few regions and moments in time. His early days in Ann Arbor, Michigan opened up the gateway to crate digging, odd finds, and new discoveries. "Ann Arbor is the birthplace of Ghostly International," Max begins. "I was first told about Ghostly when I was a kid, and while it didn't initially stick—Lusine would have been a bit over my head at that point, I imagine—I eventually circled back around and got really into School of Seven Bells, Tycho and others. The music I discovered through that label, a particularly relevant favorite being Heathered Pearls' Loyal album, definitely gave me a lot of the experiences that furthered my interest in the music in the mix."

The best part up till now was a lack of proper, heavy techno. That was solved with the movie Blade (1998) with, specifically, "the blood rave scene in Blade. So, I guess I'd say it sounded like it was for vampires!" It was Confusion (Reconstruction Mix) by Pump Panel, and after endless repeats on his friend's iPod, he dug into Detroit, the history, DJing, Movement, Interdimentional Transmissions, and more. "When I saw Carl Craig play live as 69 and I could hear the fusion of soul, funk, future sounds... It was the first time I heard a set that made the lineage of techno culture from black dance clubs through to the present form so explicit, so tangible. I love the sound, of course, but the cultural and historical significance of techno, and the fact that it's a distinctly Midwestern art form, made it infinitely more important to me."

And some advise for us all: do your homework. "Always keep working to better understand why techno parties exist, why they need/needed to happen underground, and who is communicating to/for whom in this music. Get educated, gain a sense of respect for the people who paved the way out of necessity, learn to share the space where you are a guest, and most importantly, be able to identify and support who is genuine and making a real positive difference right now in your community.

"You will be rewarded with a more whole experience each time you go out to listen to music—feeling a greater connection with the people dancing and with those who came before us. It's all fun but if you put in the extra effort it can really be something special!"

Max's mixed is paired, fittingly, with the one and only Hito Steyerl, whose work mine both internet history but the history of media, memory, and technology. Factory of the Sun (2015) is literally a film about a fake video game the viewer can't play, as they sit in poolside chairs inside a Tron-like grid.

Kicking off our New Palm seasonal mixes with a recording from last year’s mountaintop ambient hike by Max Ellington. The hike outing turned our to be a fairly brutal one last October - It was a freezing night, a new moon, the mountain was covered in a heavy cloud and we couldn’t see more than a few feet in front of us. Sound seemed to come out of nowhere. All we could do to take our minds off the cold and dark was tune in to Max’s music for this stretch, it was mesmerizing. 

Thank you Max for sharing this with us to kick this off - we hope these mix shares will be nice memory stamps and reflections of the get-togethers.

New Palm 01: Spring - Max Ellington

The anchor of this mix is a recollection of a moment from sometime in September 2017. I'd left my job and begun traveling abroad for several weeks. Almost a full month into my trip, I was visiting some friends in Australia, in Far North Queensland. We spent four or so days walking around a cute little resort town tucked between the beach and sprawling mountains covered in deep jungle. 

One morning during my stay I crept out of the house early and walked by myself along the beach and out to the end of a long pier extending eastward over the Pacific. As I stood and looked out at some islands balanced delicately on the horizon, and then back towards the dark green slopes jutting upwards behind the facade of the town, I was overcome with the idea that this was just about as far as I could possibly be from where I grew up in Michigan. I have long fixated on the feeling of being "far from home;" even now as I approach five years living in LA I still often find myself pausing to soak in the fact that I'm really *all the way over here* as if I need to bottle up the sensation to make sure I don't forget it. 

But here it was in full force, that feeling totally distilled and concentrated in a way that could never again be matched, leaving me rapt in silence as sunburnt Ozzies milled around me. It felt triumphant but not final, as though I had completed a journey outwards and could now work out my path back, rediscovering what I'd skipped or discarded along the way. 

This selection of tracks is meant to start from that specific moment and then unfurl itself towards the more general "far from home" idea, the little tingle that you get when you've left your usual corner of reality and are facing unknowns with eager eyes; full of euphoria yet grounded, reminded of all that it took to get to this point.

This is a recording of a set originally streamed live on VPN Radio on the 4th of July. Saish (aka SwarJi) had hit me up that morning and asked, since we were all stuck at home for the holiday (and feeling more than a bit skeptical of the spirit of patriotism), if I wanted to join him for an impromptu stream and play some music--less as a celebration of the 4th than an angsty refutation. Naturally I pulled some drum & bass records and adjacent 'fast music' for channeling these feelings! As the stuck-at-home-reading-heavy-news days stretch on I think that we're all still feeling a need for some kind of defiant catharsis, and I hope that this can help someone out there to achieve that!
