Next up we have a mix from one of LA's brightest DJ community members, Max Ellington (@berrmax). Max is an LA-based DJ with roots in Ann Arbor, MI. Through his VPN Radio show, Surrealchemistry, he has embarked on a mission to explore the power of deep and psychadelic dance music. He's also a resident DJ at the New Palm event series. Some words from Max about the mix: 

"I used this mix as an assignment to break out of a lower tempo zone I've been vibing on lately and grab some faster + most importantly weirder records from the shelf. I tried to find a balance between speed and intensity--moves to higher tempos eventually accompanied by pillowy synths and dubby basslines.. the feeling of accelerating towards a soft landing!"

For our eighth episode, we are excited to feature one of a kind selector and Anemone co-organizer, Max Ellington. Max performed a special closing set in the early morning hours at our augural Anemone party, and will be back for a frenetic and dynamic B2B2B at our upcoming gathering in collaboration with the Acid Camp family on 10/26. 

A note on the mix:

"This mix envisions a dancefloor suspended in the open ocean, bobbing and rolling with the massive surface waves above and lit by dappled sunbeams reflecting off of enormous, swirling schools of fish like a living disco ball, the light and motion interrupted periodically by the slow, looming silhouettes of whales and manta rays. Searching for the perfect beat with vast, endless blue in all directions."    -Max

Kicking off our New Palm seasonal mixes with a recording from last year’s mountaintop ambient hike by Max Ellington. The hike outing turned our to be a fairly brutal one last October - It was a freezing night, a new moon, the mountain was covered in a heavy cloud and we couldn’t see more than a few feet in front of us. Sound seemed to come out of nowhere. All we could do to take our minds off the cold and dark was tune in to Max’s music for this stretch, it was mesmerizing. 

Thank you Max for sharing this with us to kick this off - we hope these mix shares will be nice memory stamps and reflections of the get-togethers.

"I recorded this set over the last weeks while being locked up, away from “normal life”, during the pandemic. The approach was to play a bit with granular synthesis. Using all kinds of different sources. 
Field recordings, electromagnetic distortions or diffuse signals I receive with my multi-band radio.
For me, this has more the feeling of a collage than a live-set. 
Look at it as something similar to a guided meditation, rather than a failing attempt to simulate the experience of a club."
