We’re in the hands of Tonight’s Dream Records honcho Light of Cacti for Chrysalism 008. Despite initial designs to plan out this mix to represent the journey of the storm, Light of Cacti was spontaneously inspired by a rainy day - resulting in an authenticity that resonates throughout his selection, and profoundly embodies this series. 

From the first crackle of vinyl we’re taken into a brooding and melancholic soundscape, journeying from deep and dreamy ambient, into worldbuilding textures and drum patterns.

Chrysalism 009 comes from an old friend aka.zato, and is inspired by a quiet nostalgia for past nights spent dancing & winding down in living rooms. It listens much like a mix tape, which is its intention. Opening with a field recording taken from outside his house, the mix moves intuitively & electively - balearic in places, flecked with ambient textures and moving towards guitar driven downtempo. Suitable for the first Chrysalism of summer, it’s a warm, meandering listen: a memory in motion that, like a summer storm, is a journey to watch unfold.

Chrysalism 010 opens with a warning - an eerie excerpt from Take Shelter, where dreams of acid rain and collapse blur the line between prophecy and breakdown. That tension pulses throughout this contribution: a blend of discordant and transcendent sounds that mirrors the emotional whiplash of living (and scrolling) in the now.

Inspired by the acid rain crisis of the 70s–80s, and its rare flicker of regulatory change, this mix holds both scepticism and hope. There are moments of chaos, flashes of beauty, and a deep need to integrate the extremes. One highlight - an unlikely but seamless merging of Bulgarian choral tradition with Ellen Renton’s soaring spoken word - serves as a reminder that unexpected harmony is still possible.
