After a decade-long silence, I’m back with an Essential Mix. This is the first mix I’ve posted in over 10 years—born from a youth saturated in trap, DnB, and dubstep, now reshaped by a love for deep, driving progressive house and a certain proclivity for layering multiple decks. I call it Hyper Progressive.

This isn’t a gentle comeback.
It is progressive house reimagined. 
Not for the faint-hearted.

Max Desai is a New Zealand-based DJ known for a distinct style that blends precision mixing with deep musical roots. Influenced  by underground icon Dirdygerdi—especially her track Time with Fabian Kroos—he was drawn to the idea of making every moment count. That mindset now shapes his sets: fast-paced, tightly layered, and built to push the boundaries of progressive house and make it more exciting than ever before. 

Over the last two years he has been crafting and developing his own genre - Hyper Progressive. A genre built on the foundations of progressive, but weaved by the essence of deep, minimal, techno and elements of his Indian heritage. It’s a style that’s both personal and functional: designed for the dancefloor, but with enough detail to reward deeper listening at home.

In New Zealand’s underground scene, he’s gained a quiet recognition for his technical ability and unique approach. With four tracks running at once and a clear vision driving every mix, Max is carving his own path in the electronic scene.

As director of the underground house and techno collective Hacienda, he’s also focused on building community—creating a platform for emerging local talent and curating events that give space to the deeper, more experimental corners of dance music. Through Hacienda, he's helping shape a scene that helps connect partygoers to the underground music scene across Auckland and New Zealand.
