Some toads are singing during the night close to Namur, in the countryside. This toads are calling "midwife toad". Some cricket and road in background sometimes.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley and is home to an estimated 320 mountain gorillas – roughly half of the world’s population, including several habituated groups, which can be tracked.

During my time observing the mountain gorillas we spent around 1 hour in the company of the Oruzogo group, led by Bakwate the dominant alpha Silver back.

In this recording we hear Bakwate vocalising with two females of the group. All three had been eating bark in an Omu Jeje tree just in front of where I was positioned when Bakwate decided he’d eaten enough. As he started to climb down, he vocalised to the females to say he’d eaten enough and was leaving the tree, but he wanted to be alone. The females replied with grunts saying “ok” and remained in the tree. Bakwate climbed down to the ground and walked right passed me (literally within a meter of where I was sitting). I had an incredible rush of adrenaline when he walked passed, albeit the Oruzogo gorilla group are very passive when humans are present.

This was one of the most memorable moments of my trip to Uganda.

Bird Sounds - Morning Birds for Relaxation, Meditation, Yoga , Naturescapes, Forest Ambience and Spa

I made this sound recording of a frozen lake in the winter of 2005/06 in the area around Berlin. Frozen lakes are known to give off most noise during major fluctuations in temperature: the ice expands or contracts, and the resulting tension in the ice causes cracks to appear. Due to the changes in temperature, the hours of morning and evening are usually the best times to hear these sounds. In my experience, thin ice is especially interesting for acoustic phenomena; it is more elastic and sounds are propagated better across the surface. Snowfall, on the other hand, has a muffling effect and the sound can only travel to a limited extent. The ice sheet acts as a huge membrane across which the cracking and popping sounds spread. Underwater microphones proved especially well-suited for these recordings: in a small hole drilled close beneath the surface of the water, the sounds emitted by the body of ice carry particularly well. The most striking thing about these recordings is the synthetic-sounding descending tones caused by the phenomenon of the dispersion of sound waves. The high frequencies of the popping and cracking noises are transmitted faster by the ice than the deeper frequencies, which reach the listener with a time lag as glissandi sinking to almost bottomless depths.

Recorded in October 1995 within the Gamba Reserve Complex, near the village of Sounga in Gabon, Central Africa. Recorded onto DAT with two Crown PZM mics placed ~35' apart (for playback in the western lowland gorilla exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo &amp; Botanical Garden). As my footsteps disappear into the forest, listen to the symphony of sound build, from just a few soloists to the entire orchestra. Also listen for the "whoosh- whoosh-whoosh-WHOOOOOOOOSH" of a pair of hornbills flying in.

Thunderstorm, rain and hail on the mountain of the High Atlas

This is a short recording of a singing male humpback whale recorded in the Vava'u island group of the Kingdom of Tonga on Aug. 6, 2010. This is my first time in Tonga and with the Southern Pacific humpback whales. It is interesting to compare this song with recordings I made on the Silver Bank of the Dominican Republic in the North Atlantic earlier this year. Tonga Humpback Whale Song, Aug. 6, 2010

Over the years I've recorded many sounds in different locations around the world. This collection of recordings aims to highlight the unique 'voices of a place'.

Filming in Kakum National Park, Western Province, Ghana. We slept in the forest and woke to film a stunning sunrise from a wooden platform high in the canopy. This was just some of the audio I captured that morning.

Frog croaks at midnight

On my usual way to the shore I passed a small but dense wood of firs. A rather uninteresting place, as I never have seen one bird there. Walking beside I heard some weak creaks and found two trees that had grown together with their twigs (something I've never seen before)causing that sound as they were loose and moving in the gusts.

While installing microphones, a cone falled down nearby. I didn't realize anything, until searching the mics back, a flock of Crossbills flew away. And there was also one Woodpecker, never saw it, but can be heard ;-

Don't underrate small and boring woodlands!

Rowing on a exceptional calm day on Makholma Bay, Western Finland, with thousands of Long-tailed Ducks (and Eider) resting. A flock of one thousand of these arctic migrators change place when I come too near, though being more than one kilometer away. (Technically not so good as there's boat noise in the background, but for curiosity)

A Row with Long-tailed Ducks  - 24/4/2019 - Makholma Bay

This is a sample from the album 'Cape York: Melaleuca Swamp', recorded on the the edge of a remote melaleuca (paperbark) swamp in Cape York, far northern Australia. The microphones were placed near the edge of the wetland, adjacent to dry tropical woodland and with an open lilypad-covered lagoon in the background.  Throughout the album there is a nice natural mix of early morning sounds from wetland and woodland species in this unique landscape.
