After six years of believing that I was fully done with Burning Man, the stars happened to align this summer when I got a calling to go. 

Back in 2016, I never thought that Burning Man would allow me to press the reset button and relieve myself from many things I was carrying emotionally. Then suddenly when I was out on the playa in my element, I began to feel myself again: connected, worry-free, present. 

Thanks to 11 days of complete disconnection from my computer and phone, I was left at the mercy of nature’s elements which brought me back to a place of peace and serenity.  

It was such a joy to take part in Burning Man’s social experiment, one that unites a community of like minded beings from various backgrounds. 

I loved getting my hands dirty while building the camp, helping out with a friend's art structure and chatting with new and old friends every single day.  This was a whole new experience for me; an experience that filled my heart and inspired me in powerful ways. 

For the first time, I can safely say that I have been transformed by my time on the playa, and for that I feel grateful and humbled. 

Memorable moments like riding solo on my bike, letting go of plans, eating nourishing food, getting totally lost in the city, visiting random camps and more often than not connecting with strangers was pure magic. For me, this is the essence of Burning Man: an experience of contribution, full of serendipity and spontaneity. 
 
Here’s a personal highlight of mine that I’d like to share: 
It’s Friday evening, and I have been chosen to set the mood on the Robot Heart bus (which I must admit was one of my favorite nights out there). Here I am pre-set drinking Sake and sharing stories with my dear friend Benjamin Alexander.  The bus is parked at camp when I jump on top and begin to play for 20 minutes before the wheels start turning. Our drive to the deep playa begins, and with that a brutal dust storm follows.  I was instantly taken back in time to my 2015 Burn when I was fascinated by the fairy-lit bicycles chasing the bus, lighting up the space with an array of moving colors.  Eventually, after an hour of driving around, the wind stops, the dust settles, and the bus finds its parking spot for the night.  I finally remove my dust mask and watch the vast space in front me light up as I finish my set.  An unforgettable moment, visual, crowd…everything was perfect. 
 
To all of you who are reading this who were there dancing and glowing on the playa, I would like to say a huge thank you!  I will cherish that moment for the rest of my life.  You inspired me to smile and shine.

"Our first time ever on the playa was overwhelming.
We knew that our debut at Burning Man had to be as the group that we are,  Keinemusik. Being given the huge honor to play the iconic sunrise set on the Mayan Warrior during the Robot Heart link-up was a dream come true for us. Enjoying this surreal moment together with so many people was a highlight in our musical career. Here are two hours and a half of  Keinemusik (Rampa, Adam Port, &ME).

"The energy level was high on the first night of BM seeing as it had been some years since the last burn. It was my first time playing on Monday, the feeling was familiar. I had gotten reacquainted with the desert just a few hours before my set, but it was like nothing had changed. It felt amazing to  be surrounded by so many old and new friends sharing music and smiles. This year’s theme was “Waking Dreams” it felt like that in a sense. My family was back home."

Kawas - Mayan Warrior - Burning Man 2022

"As a first time burner or virgin (as some would like to say) I couldn't wrap my head around what I was going to experience -  I suddenly found myself in the desert torn between the beauty, adventure, excitement of the place and the abundance that makes such hedonism possible. I couldn't help but wonder if it was really necessary to travel to the desert, a place that can be so hostile to life. And then it caught me after all, the magic that everyone talks about. The Burning Man spirit, the fundamental idea of sharing, the warm-heartedness, the beautiful encounters, the indescribable sunrises, the surreal mountains on the horizon, the many bicycles and an endless sea of LEDs.

The night before my show at Mayan Warrior, I just wanted to take a quick look at the art car and then go to sleep, but when I got there I could not leave. The art car's lasers  were reflected in Michael Benisty's sculpture "Reflection" and colored the surroundings in soft green with periodical flame throwers which lit up the faces of the people. Mandrake was playing an incredibly good set that made the crowd go wild. The art car's majestic warrior like face glowed in the night, watching over the sea of bicycles parked in front of it.

In the morning hours, about an hour after sunrise, I went on stage, tired but happy, and took over the music. I thank the hard-bitten ravers who danced so excessively with me despite the rising heat. It was wonderful.

"No dust for three very strange years… This very special place and everything it represents and involves started to be a beautiful but distant memory. Finally going back was nothing but great, and celebrating Ten years of Mayan Warrior (and nine of myself being involved with it) made it even more unique. Every time we linked with Robot Heart in the past meant a lot to me because it was a vibrant proof of the hard work behind the whole operation and what we are as a community, so playing at this years link night having the cherry on top of maxa camp’s deer as a special guest was the best comeback I could have asked for. Playing surrounded by people I love in front of all this magical creatures creating one big single entity reminded me why I do what I do… Thank you all."

"Wednesday night, right before the link with Robot Heart and Maxa, people on their bikes following the warrior art car until it found its spot. An amazing drone show appeared in front of us, creating a perfect introduction for my set.

My first time playing with Mayan Warrior was at the virtual burn during weird times. This year I got to play for real in the desert – a dream come true. I love being part of this super talented family and grateful to all of them for making the seemingly impossible possible and bringing us all together.

Dramian - Mayan Warrior - Burning Man 2022

We have to admit this set was our ‘wow’ moment of this year's Burn. 

Coming up on the bus on the Saturday morning and watching Lee Burridge deliver another iconic sunrise set. The crowd was vibrating and our adrenalin started to pump. We were up next, about to play the last official set of Burning Man Robot Heart 2022.  And as we started to play, it truly felt like a dream. 

Those who were at the burn will know that this year was a hot one and as time passed during our set, the hotter it became, yet the playa dance floor lived on. It was so heart-warming to see so many stay with us on this musical journey despite the heat. 

With The Robot Heart team holding umbrellas on the CDJs screens and our foreheads, our crew dancing in the heart above us, and a playa filled with smiles time stopped for that moment. 

With Benjamin extending the set several times, we think we may have even beaten the record for number of closing tracks. Thank you to everyone who was there with us and to those who are listening now. 

Our Robot Heart 2022 was definitely one memorable rollercoaster.

Ever since I saw the Warrior go out into the playa for the first time in 2014 and lived the magic of chasing music in the most psychedelic ambiance there exists, I dreamt of this moment. So it’s no secret that It fills my heart with gratitude and excitement to have been able to share this dream as part of the Warrior’s 10 year celebration. Playing in front of the beautiful Ilumina sculpture, cruising the playa while curating the soundtrack on the Warrior’s powerful sound system and seeing  all the bikes follow the Warrior and settle in front of an amazing LED lit dance floor is an experience that can only take place in this magical surreal experience we call Burning Man.
Huge thanks to all the ravers that came and danced to my music, thank you for your support and kind words, it is always so gratifying to share music I love with all of you.

"Burning Man is happenning again after 3 years, and the Mayan Warrior is blowing it’s 10th candle... oh boy, playing this closing set was kind of a responsibilty, right? As a Dj I believe that if there is one set in the year that you shall prepare it’s for sure this one… and God knows I did; playlisting my most special and sophisticated music for hours during the summer.
But once I was out there in dust, flowing with the energy of my fellow burners that went all the way to this very last moment, surrounded by the warriors amongst the warriors, well… I must say I didn’t really followed the plan. The word of Ricardo Villalobos that I sampled in the first track I played resonated the whole set in my mind « in the party everyone is just like a kid, innocent, not serious, not responsible » and here comes the disco, baby!
if  I had to describe a Burning Man early morning to a blind person I would simply play him Time by Pachanga Boys. It might be the only track from my original playlist that made it to the actual set... 10 years after it’s release I couldn’t think of anything more appropriate to close this very special week.
I still get goosebumps when I remember that magic morning and I’m forever grateful to every soul who made that moment possible. Love you so much!!!

Daniel Weil - Mayan Warrior - Burning Man 2022

Mayan Warrior is the result of a collaborative project that has united artists, craftsmen, photographers, designers, technologists, architects and musicians from Mexico City and Northern California. 

The project’s original intent was to present to the world the incredible ascent of contemporary Mexican electronic music while paying respect to the deep and ancient sources from which that visual and auditory culture had grown.


Both light and sound are curated by some of the world’s most prominent artists to transport participants to the very origins of the culture – and to a new understanding of contemporary electronic expression.

AND YES: Mayan Warrior is driven from Mexico City to the playa – and back – each year. It's a labor of love and we're glad so many people enjoy it.
