The absolutely huge feat which is Maztek’s forthcoming LP is finally upon us. ‘Warpath’ was rumoured since the drum & bass veteran dropped his first single, a collaboration with Aeph, on his newly created 0101 imprint, which signified a brand new creative endeavour for an artist who’s spent years crafting himself into the genre’s history.
And it’ll be yet another defining output for one of neuro’s pioneers, who’s already paved his way with a number of releases and will continue to do so with the calibre of music showcased throughout ‘Warpath’s track listing.

‘Warpath’ presents Maztek journeying back to his musical roots, whilst he brings through a host of talented artists to collaborate and feature on an epically diverse selection of records. Three years of ideas, work and struggle, ‘Warpath’ is a concoction of both old school and new school, drawing out its hip hop, reggae and drum & bass roots with a passion that modern neurofunk has afforded him. His aim was to bring back the same vibes which got him hooked on the genre, but give them a more contemporary twist, with some tracks purposefully sounding more electronic or acoustic. It’s the acoustic snares and drums prevalent across the album which help translate Maztek’s music into a live setting, which is the reason why his cuts are so devastating on the dancefloor.

First track, Maztek and Redpill’s ‘Electronic Warfare’, sets a standard, slicing deep with every stab of sonic disturbance. Next up, ‘The Dirt’ has already made the rounds alongside his other featured collaboration with Aeph ‘Trajectory’, with both tracks having already caused carnage on dancefloors since they were unmasked earlier this year, with Aeph appearing again to obliterate more speakers alongside ‘What You Got’. Maztek’s standalone delivery ‘Cheeky Dub’ helps to encapsulate the LP’s ethos, a return to the true sound which runs through the heart of all his productions. Notorious frontmen and women like MC Mota, Pendulum’s Ben Verse, Virus Syndicate, Nuklear MC and Miss Trouble also add their vocal crooning into the mix, adding perfect swathes of cool throughout the album’s offerings. Maztek & Gridlok’s ‘Gladiators’ makes a reappearance, yet another heavyweight merging of minds. Tracks like ‘Pandamonium’, ‘Bass Drop’, ‘Back to the Jungle’, ‘Come Closer’ and ‘Timeless’ further highlight the unbridled diversity of Maztek, even within the darker constraints of drum & bass. And this is one reason why ‘Warpath’ will hold up against the test of time, alongside the legacy of an artist who’s been able to draw from an intimidating array of artists for his biggest work of art to date.

The forthcoming LP from Delta9 Recordings presents everything the label has endeavoured to construct since they first began releasing music. Based between two of Europe’s most creative hubs, the label has stretched its roots from Berlin and Bergamo, in Italy, to draw out a host of inspirations. It’s dark, minimalistic and techstep sounds have filtered across subs within their biggest club spaces, helping to promote the drum & bass culture in Northern Italy and demonstrating its contribution to the worldwide scene. From its very beginning stooped in the culture of free parties and small venues, up until its fiftieth release, Delta9 Recordings have continued to push the boundaries since their inception in 2012. The natural evolution can be seen throughout their back catalogue of music as well as their live events, which have hosted several Italian and international artists from the harshest realms of drum & bass. And the LP which benchmarks a phenomenal number of releases channels the exact same ethos.

The album highlights both already renowned international artists on top of the artists which Delta9 will be working with in the future. As well as the already notoriously fierce music Delta9 releases, they also branch out into the liquid subgenre, which helps to diversify the music given a platform through the 50th benchmark. A host of talented newcomers and critically acclaimed artists stand out across the track listing.

Beginning the LP is ‘Neurotic’, which sees Flipz MC, Logics and Kodin take centre stage. Invadhertz brings LaMeduza on board for ‘Bullet’. SL8R offers up ‘Totum’ whilst Logics and Kodin return again, although this time for the remix of their track ‘Extrema Ratio Remix’ by Dabs. Disprove’s ‘Relative’, Akrom’s ‘Feelings’, Instinkt’s ‘Ultra’ and Ephyum’s ‘Numinous’ all deliver a harder edge. Freqax, Kaiza and Kryptomedic join forces on ‘Bolt’ and SD’s ‘Ice Cubes’ adds a cooler touch. Meanwhile, Synth Ethics’ ‘Flash Crash’, Neve, Frame & Skip’s ‘Say Now’, Stoner & Dottor Poison’s ‘Circus V’ and Underspawn’s ‘Gripped In’ only add to the multi-faceted subgenre styles. And Rafiki & Draize’s ‘Surface Tension’, D Flect’s ‘Sarasvati’, Sentic Cycle’s ‘Juno’, Jazzatron’s ‘Cheap Chip’ and Echonic & Nova D9’s ‘Stack’ further solidify just how far ranging Delta9 Recordings scope really is. All in all, it’s one almighty package. And Delta9 Recordings wanted to deliver exactly this for their 50th release.

The machine is continuing to run after the release of Maztek’s colossal ‘Warpath’ LP. Following the musician’s most monumental achievement to date, ‘Warpath’ signified a new beginning for Maztek, one where he’d have full creative freedom over the music he spent years meticulously moulding within his studio through 0101 Musics. And it’s a studio which has laid claim to some of Neurofunk’s most definitive pieces; a legacy that’s still pushing the boundaries following Maztek’s most recent LP, alongside the remixes which have helped to add yet another dimension to his craft.

If the reworks of Maztek’s pivotal ‘Warpath’ LP weren’t enough to whet your appetite, he’s about to unleash four brand new cuts which signify why he became a genre great during the epitomic explosion of drum & bass. Including two dancefloor records, as well as half-time experimental numbers which will lend themselves to the abrupt edge of any DJ set, Maztek certainly delivers with this next release. Although this was to be expected from a label spearheaded by an artist held in such high regard, whose album rose to critical acclaim across the dance music spectrum.

The EP’s opener ‘Uncoded’ begins with ticking atmospherics, which slowly lead you into your peril as you’re dropped down a climatic chasm of punching drums and snapping beats. ‘Dis & Dat’ is more lumbering in its patterns, stepping between a carefully laid out composition and a growling bassline. Then ‘Make it Clap’ lends itself to 0101 Musics burgeoning diversity, one which is beginning to seep its way into every layer of the drum & bass fabric. It’s shifting subs and clinking breaks pull you deep into the mix, as it crashes formation after formation. The final attack is done through ‘Fatal Error’, which again is brooding in its intensity yet still hits on target again and again as it begins to become almost overbearing. It adds an uncertainty to 0101 Music; it’s an uncertainty which heralds the imprint, proving that they’re not here to stick to any one prototype. Instead, they’re here to define themselves in their own right and ‘Warpath’ proved to be just the beginning.

The ‘Warpath’ LP from Maztek set a precedent and not just for him as an artist. It proved that independent figures can break out on their own and in doing so, can deliver cutting edge music through their own platform, garnering just as much support from the entire drum & bass as they would have done on a more mainstay imprint. And the ‘Warpath’ LP was also significant because of the fact that it was used to launch Maztek’s 0101 Records platform, which has since gone on to host many artists who are acting as pillars of the wider scene, bringing fresh sounds to the table and delivering the upfront music which has come under Maztek’s radar.
It’s these same artists who are about to take the ‘Warpath’ LP into another dimension, drawing from its original track list and offering their own versions of Maztek’s production. From the hectic world of Merikan, who draws for his signature through his rework of ‘The Dirt’, through the take on Maztek’s ‘Come Closer’ by Insomniax, there’s a range of producers who are brought into the fray to present the album from their own worlds. Trio Inward, Hanzo and Randie get their hands on collaboration ‘Gladiators’ featuring Gridlok, whilst ‘Pandemonium’ is given the VIP treatment by Maztek. Disprove follows in quick succession with his twist on the title-track alongside Ben Verse. Korsakov stalwart Droptek draws ‘It’s On’ with Virus Syndicate into his own sonic landscape and historic drum & bass figure Optiv introduces listeners to his reimagining of ‘What You Got’. MC Mota’s vocals are taken into a new frame by Synth Ethics with ‘The Breaker’ and Kiril then has his turn on Maztek & Aeph’s ‘Trajectory’. Up next, relative newcomer Phonetick gives a more lumbering motion to ‘Electronic Warfare’, keeping the same chaotic bass riffs as the original with Redpill and Maztek’s expert manufacturing. 
For one final time on 0101 Records, Signs remixes ‘Cheeky Dub’ and highlights why they were such a formidable force before their split. Then RedPill makes another appearance although this time through his own rendition of ‘Shake the Foundation’. Then before the appearance of Insomniax, Current Value delivers his manic patches of synthesis across ‘Timeless’.
As the remix album closes, it signifies just how far Maztek has come as a producer. From his beginnings on some of the most pivotal labels, through to setting up his own, he’s made his mark. With the team he now has at his fingertips, he proves this is something which will continue years from the creation of 0101 Records.
