Insomniax is a collaboration of two producers, Renzo (Damien Fellows) and Freshold (Oliver Millin) hailing from the South West, UK. Renzo and Freshold have both been devoted to making dance music since the early rave days of the 90s.

After getting their tunes into the hands of Viper Recordings boss Futurebound, the duo were signed to the label in 2014 and made their debut on the prestigious Headroom EP series with the track 'Digital Murder'. Following their Viper debut, they released two tracks 'Can't Resist' and 'Over Again VIP' which were featured on Viper's Drum & Bass Summer Slammers 2014 album, along with an exclusive DJ mix by Insomniax. The duo then went on to work with Viper Recordings artists, Six Blade, to produce 'Contact' which was released on Viper's 10 year anniversary album, 'Decade'.

Now fresh off the back of their latest track 'Lunar Dub' which was featured on Viper's Drum & Bass Annual 2016 album, Insomniax come with their debut single on Viper VIP with 'Uridium / Longest Night'.

Producers Freshold and Renzo have both been making music since the rave days of the 90s and have since come together under the name Insomniax, a name that has become synonymous with quality drum & bass music. The duo from the UK have been an integral part of the Viper family since signing in 2014, with a history of strong releases, like ‘Goldsmith Road’, ‘Crying Rain’, and ‘Uridium’, which hit the top of the charts on Beatport last year.

Continuing to move from strength to strength, the latest release from Insomniax is a solo production by Freshold, the aptly named ‘Foghorn’. Text-to-speech AI voices set the scene from the beginning amidst a mysterious, misty introduction, footsteps plodding in the background adding to the eerie atmosphere. The dialogue between the two characters adds a menacing undertone, but the subtleties in the sound design are what really set this track apart.

Faint carnival sounds add to the building scenery, while the track’s title foghorns ring in the distance. The combination of such organic sounds coming together serve to create a natural, cinematic opening that truly tells a story. A creative approach to drum & bass, the track is incredibly refreshing and sparks the imagination.

However, the track isn’t all just about story-telling – Insomniax deliver a healthy dose of bass with the drop; the kind of minimal, spacious, rising bassline that is set to take the scene by storm. The bass is truly the star of the track, given ample room to breathe amidst the rest of the production and deservedly stealing the spotlight.

Crisp, clean, and totally creative, ‘Foghorn’ is sure to be a quick favourite for DJs and ravers alike.

'High Fives & Devil Eyes' is the brand-new LP forthcoming from SCAR, a duo who've spent years dominating the waters of dance music with their formulae of underground, yet accessible drum & bass. Individually and as part of their SCAR project, both Script and Survival have been involved in shaping the genre for decades, helping to sculpt its formative years alongside a range of imprints that have ensured it longevity. For their forthcoming album they've once again been welcomed into the fold of Metalheadz, where SCAR have now been exclusively signed after appearing in their catalogue as one of its main staples. Since their first piece of music together, 'When', debuted on Metalheadz via the label's esteemed 'Platinum Breakz' series, through to their first SCAR artist LP 'The Orkyd Project' in 2016, the pair's journey has followed the label's growth and they've continued to be supported by its founder Goldie. On first listen to 'High Fives & Devil Eyes' it's instantly clear why they were made such an essential part of such a revered platform, bringing together the historic elements as well as the modern production levels which have enabled them to remain trend setters over the years.

From the sounds of 'Circle of Trust', right through to the finely-tuned vocals of Eleanor Higgins on 'Eternal', the tastes catered to throughout 'High Fives & Devil Eyes' demonstrates why SCAR have been welcomed into the roster of Metalheadz and it's not just down to their heritage with the imprint. Tracks like 'State of Delusion', 'Stolen Memories', 'Can't Do Anything With It' and 'Nothing Lasts Forever' show how SCAR still bridge the gap between contemporary standards and an understanding of their roots, as well as how this has influenced their current direction. Coming up next, 'Funk Control' injects much needed soul into the drum & bass sphere whilst tracks like 'First Sound', 'The Seeker', 'Thinking out Loud' and 'Pauline' continue the journey of breaks and immersive soundscapes. The album's title-record 'High Fives and Devil Eyes' encompasses the album's rawness whilst cuts like 'Deep South' and 'Torn Apart' pedestals the diversity demonstrated throughout. The ‘Warpath’ LP from Maztek set a precedent and not just for him as an artist. It proved that independent figures can break out on their own and in doing so, can deliver cutting edge music through their own platform, garnering just as much support from the entire drum & bass as they would have done on a more mainstay imprint. And the ‘Warpath’ LP was also significant because of the fact that it was used to launch Maztek’s 0101 Records platform, which has since gone on to host many artists who are acting as pillars of the wider scene, bringing fresh sounds to the table and delivering the upfront music which has come under Maztek’s radar.
It’s these same artists who are about to take the ‘Warpath’ LP into another dimension, drawing from its original track list and offering their own versions of Maztek’s production. From the hectic world of Merikan, who draws for his signature through his rework of ‘The Dirt’, through the take on Maztek’s ‘Come Closer’ by Insomniax, there’s a range of producers who are brought into the fray to present the album from their own worlds. Trio Inward, Hanzo and Randie get their hands on collaboration ‘Gladiators’ featuring Gridlok, whilst ‘Pandemonium’ is given the VIP treatment by Maztek. Disprove follows in quick succession with his twist on the title-track alongside Ben Verse. Korsakov stalwart Droptek draws ‘It’s On’ with Virus Syndicate into his own sonic landscape and historic drum & bass figure Optiv introduces listeners to his reimagining of ‘What You Got’. MC Mota’s vocals are taken into a new frame by Synth Ethics with ‘The Breaker’ and Kiril then has his turn on Maztek & Aeph’s ‘Trajectory’. Up next, relative newcomer Phonetick gives a more lumbering motion to ‘Electronic Warfare’, keeping the same chaotic bass riffs as the original with Redpill and Maztek’s expert manufacturing. 
For one final time on 0101 Records, Signs remixes ‘Cheeky Dub’ and highlights why they were such a formidable force before their split. Then RedPill makes another appearance although this time through his own rendition of ‘Shake the Foundation’. Then before the appearance of Insomniax, Current Value delivers his manic patches of synthesis across ‘Timeless’.
As the remix album closes, it signifies just how far Maztek has come as a producer. From his beginnings on some of the most pivotal labels, through to setting up his own, he’s made his mark. With the team he now has at his fingertips, he proves this is something which will continue years from the creation of 0101 Records.
