Rumours of the infernal mechanism were rife amongst the population, that somewhere deep in the sublevels of the city it waited with the eternal patience that belongs only to machines. It was said that those people whom the system had broken, whose minds had snapped – ejecting them from the social architecture… were first incarcerated, analyzed and then taken to it to be erased completely. He was about to find out the truth of this, dragged from his metallic cell by those machine claws, his arms bound tightly across his chest and vocal chords paralyzed. He wanted to scream, terror engulfing him and winding around his vertebrae, giving birth to a black hole within the pit of his stomach... but all that emerged was a whimper of despair. It was registered by the synthetic mind and catalogued in its vast archive of variations of this moment - its casual analysis of this journey to death. The chamber was incomprehensibly vast… and it was there waiting, reaching with its threatening appendages from the shadows, its diabolical jaws enshrouded in the dull green light of a vast viewing screen displaying the symbol of the architect. The teeth started that relentless slicing, the very ground trembling through the power of its mighty workings, the mechanism to be his absolute obliteration… those claws pulling him inexorably towards the end as the viewscreen changed and flashes the word ‘goodbye’. The GRINDER completes its work. In the almost oblivious streets above, a faint rumble is felt – knowing, fearful looks are briefly exchanged before the citizens hurry on with their business.

Apex neuro and tech producer MAZTEK arrives with his first full EP on leading d&b label, EATBRAIN. Following up appearances on the label’s Tales of the Undead and Mirror Universe VA LP’s, the GRINDER EP sees Maztek deliver 4 tracks of high-grade dancefloor weaponry, enwrapped in the kind of heavy sonic technology that his fans have come to expect. From the tear-out but tightly wound collaboration with with June Miller in BLAFFER, to the grime-influenced and glitched vocals of GOOD QUESTION that comes in heavy with the evil bounce of its bass – the EP runs a diverse and unique flex. Title-track GRINDER delivers an appropriately punishing assault, packed with sinister sound design and brooding, dynamic riff, whilst TANGLE delivers an edgy and lightly percussive shuffle to accompany its powerful bass. The pilot quickly glanced either side of the cockpit, peering out through the oil-stained reinforced glass that separated him from the thick clouds of the permasmog that he and his fellow skykillers were now gliding through. Death’s whisper rode quietly on their tails, the promise of a further step into the unending cycle of violence as irresistible to it as the concept of the freshly slain under its ivory digits. The pilot had acquired a sense for its presence, drawing fierce consciousness as mortality skewered him viciously against the present. In a moment, they soared out of the thick wall of pollution and the skies lit up with stark abruptness as plumes of burning oil billowed from his brothers’ vehicles, their screams and burning skin engulfed by the rapid fractal destruction of their mechanisms. Death screamed with wild abandon at his hind, as he slammed a nitropellet into the furnace and smashed the rapidstart of his engine. The propeller whirled immediately into action, rocket thrusters firing and pushing him deep into his seat as the steam snaked through his nose ventricle and he became intertwined with his infernal engine, enveloping him in its toxic carnage. His hand moved to the bomb-bay switch, doors opening and a stack of murder rolling outside with the reaper swift behind, ready to collect the souls of the sunworshippers below, the infidel for whom the power of the perpetual engine is forever beyond.

The forthcoming LP from The Clamps and Kosen Productions isn’t just a collection of records which the French artist has spent months perfecting. It’s also a colossal look into the soundscape which such a high-calibre artist has at their disposal. Stretching across fifteen tracks, between drum & bass and garage, The Clamps focuses around the insanity that is stretching itself across the contemporary world and how he’s helped to define this sonically through each one of his records. There’s also a host of sci-fi inspired cuts which add to the LP’s explosive themes. From the already revealed record ‘LHS 1140b’, with a name that’ll resonate for any space fans, right through to the hard-hitting throws of ‘End of an Era’, there’s a taste to suit every palette throughout every expertly composed record. 

After already setting an enviable standard with the undeniably heavyweight standards on tracks like ‘Looking for Trouble’ alongside the notorious Nuklear MC, standalone offerings such as ‘Mankind’ and ‘30a #3a-23 Happiness’ peddle an unforgettable level of engineering whilst also pushing through a cinematic backdrop. Then a range of collaborations follow in their wake, including ‘Astronauts’ alongside Impak, as well as Snotrocket for ‘Friends in the Hood’. Merikan also joins the fray with ‘Fast Way’. 

The pace is continued to be set with ‘Cattle Mutilation’, whilst Mizo and The Clamps join forces for the meticulously sequenced drums of ‘Time Pressure’. ‘Medina’ pulls you through its half-time madness whilst adding to the LP’s strident versatility, which is followed in quick succession by ‘Soul of the Abyss’ with its throbbing LFOs. The Clamps and NickBee then merge their collective talents for ‘Addicted’, with its more old-school underpinnings. ‘The First and the Last’ platforms the creeping atmospherics which characterises many pieces of The Clamps’ sonic artillery, whilst ‘End of an Era’ draws the album to a close on a cataclysmic breakdown which takes you deep into the belly of the beast. ‘End of an Era’ alludes to The Clamps’ hardcore roots, whilst paying homage to the new foundations he’s laid down through his new music and Kosen Productions.

Deep within the shifting sands lay the remains of a once great city, a monument to the hubris of those who had once thought they could conquer the indomitable forces of the planet. To hold back the everpresent encroachment of the dunes they had raised walls of great heights, built upon the sacrifice of those least fortunate among them, those condemned to work beneath the blistering heat of the land. It was through their blood that the city was built, through their blood that the fortunate lived in such an otherwise inhospitable climate. As the death of these sacrifices increased however, they bore new life elsewhere. Their blood, seeping through the cracked desert soil, awakened something long since sealed away.

Fed by their misery, the creature’s power grew beneath the dunes. For each that fell it became stronger, its hunger rising as it tasted more and more that which had been denied to it for so long. Upon the night of the sun’s peak it rose, driven by the heat that still radiated from the earth. It was a malstrom of sand, fire, and bone, an amalgamation of destruction which surged across the landscape. What little life there was in this desolate place was subsumed into its maw, becoming a part of the dynamo which swept towards the city. Its winds battered against the walls, grinding their stones to dust which only furthered the creature’s power. In minutes it had broken through, and as the city was swallowed within the vortex the DUST DEVIL reclaimed for the desert what was its own once again.

MIZO returns to EATBRAIN with the release of DUST DEVIL, a five track EP featuring collaborations with TRILO & CHASER. DOUBLE RUSH features the powerful combination of MIZO & CHASER, as well as the combination of a frantic topline and charging bass which work together to move the track forwards at a rapid pace. DUST DEVIL whips this dynamic energy into a further frenzy as its basses whirl with unrestrained fury atop a devastating drumbeat. While the gradual approach of HORIZON grows to become a steady lock-step rhythm that soars with effortless aptitude over its arpeggiated bassline, MIZO & TRILO’s ARTIFICIAL NOISE takes a different approach as it leaps into the musical melee, bolstered by the power of its roaring synths.The second collaboration with CHASER, CONTACTLESS, closes the EP, its desolate soundscape quickly transformed into a tech filled groove that rides upon its rolling sub and the strange shiftings of its tonal topline synths.
