ZION TRAIN - ECCHERECCA' III - THE END OF INDUSTRIAL AGE, 05/03/1994

Following the astonishing Paul Daley tape we released early last year we are proud to present another gem from the United Tribes archive, a Zion Train live recording from the same ECCHERECCA' III event, back in 1994.
Ragga junglish and dubby acidific house for the heads, 45 minutes of wicked sound that makes you want to rave as you were in a sweaty warehouse of that very futuristic past past.

In resident DJ and member of the UT crew Danylo's words:

"Back in 1993, I was resident Dj and active member of United Tribes, playing upfront progressive house on our club nights. I was also thrilled by the emerging scene of ambient and techno dub gaining momentum in the same period. Then, our local record store in Naples, called Flying records, started to distribute 12-inch mix from a label unknown to me, called Universal Egg, Zion Train label. Well, I got amazed by the solid groove and bass of Universal Egg tunes. It was roots music projected into the future. At some point Ivanmaria Vele-the instigator of United Tribes- went to London on one of his usual trips where he met Paul Daley. In fact we were mad about the latest Leftfield productions and wanted him to play in Naples. Ivan and Paul met in a club where, surprisingly, Zion Train were playing in one of the darkest rooms. So the contact with Paul and Zion Train was created, 2 phone numbers and few notes a piece of paper with that brought us directly to shape ECCHERECCA!? III, in March 1994: The rest is history, and in this tape you can experience the incredible live performance by Zion Train. A step in a future that will ever be present."

MBE009 CHRISTOS CHONDROPOULOS - CHANTS & SONGS

Recalling the first issue of Trance Mediterranea, MBE series is presenting “Chants & Songs” an outstanding long recording on greek folk music selected and recorded by Christos Chondropoulos.

Christos Chondropoulos is a percussionist and an electronic music producer from Athens, for the MBE009 he recorded a 60mins mixtape with a focus on side A on greek folk chants from Epirus (his homeland) and Northern Greece, while on side B he moves on a more rhythmic side of folk music from the same geographic area.
Polyphonic chants, trancy bagpipes, cadence tambourines evoking practically all aspects of life, childhood, marriage, mourning for the dead, pastoral life or historical events.

A mesmerizing work of excavation on the Mediterranean Sea popular culture.

Using the benefit of hindsight, this is a snapshot or perspective of the era after the '90s "madchester" and “sulphuric soul” (gip) thing. Of course there were other things happening, lots of techno/electro/breakcore/electronica and early dubstep, but for me, this was the sound of cracked warehouses and abandoned mental hospitals when i moved here in 2002, and it remained like that until dubstep really took a grip after 2007.

 All tracks are from original records released between ’93 and ’04 (apart from the Leckey snippet), with particular focus on darkside late ‘90s flex, which bled into that era. I only found out years after that time that other people had nicknamed me The Smoking Man, probs cos i look a bit grey and tended to hang in the shadows with a big spliff when i wasn’t brukking and gurning. Not because i wore a flasher mac and had links to secret government agencies."

002 Conor Thomas

Founder of Zone Uknown, Dommune selector and recent affiliate of Asian Dope Boys, Yousuke Yukimatsu (Osaka, 1979) is a key figure in the Japanese electronic culture.
If you see him playing is impossible to don't get caught by his unique and somehow visceral style of DJing.

For MBE series he recorded 90 minutes of music made strictly by Japanese artists offering us an extraordinary wide-eyed perspective on the far east electronic culture.

Imagine to be in Osaka or in Tokyo in an overcrowded obscure underground small cave listening to some sweating freaks playing distorted noise, or sitting on a bamboo mat in a machiya while Shigeo Tanaka is playing the yumi, or being in the Hozen Ji temple reaching the ascension with the chants of the priests, or getting lost into a cyberpunk scenario with DJs spinning dark techno into a foggy warehouse with just s low strobe light on.. well you can just get a glimpse of what this tape is.

003 Yousuke Yukimatsu

Moroto Hvy Indstr aka Arlen Dilsizian is the head behind Nyege Nyege Tapes. For MBE series he compiled a 90mins mixtape as sort of retrospective on the Nyege Nyege Tapes record and the world around and behind the label.

In his own words:

"This mix-tape is solely comprised of field recordings recorded between 1949 and 1977 with two exceptions: one recording made in the 80's and one in 1996). The mix includes tracks strictly from Sub Saharan Africa from the following countries: Congo DRC/ Congo Brazzaville/ Nigeria/ Niger/ Ethiopia/ Gabon/ Cameroon/ Malawi/ Namibia/ Tanzania/ Central African Republic/ Togo/ Guinea/ Ivory Coast/ Rwanda/ Liberia/ Angola/ Madagascar/ Togo/ Sudan/ Ghana / South Africa and Uganda. It's a total of forty tracks, twenty on each side.

Apart from some transitions where I have used a bit of reverb or echo I have made hardly any changes to the original music apart from adjusting volumes. I have also played most tracks in their entirety and have not looped any sections.

The mix is a sort of the subconscious behind Nyege Nyege Tapes. Whilst Sub Saharan Africa prefigured abstraction in art centuries before Europe, the same can be said for music. Nyege Nyege Tapes always strives to draw connections between contemporary electronic micro scenes and traditional forms of music on the continent, as in our Kadodi release, releases on traditional Luo music and many other future releases that juxtapose modern day forms and their older cousins.

This mix tries to explore similar territory from a different angle. I have tried to select field recordings that puts 'traditional' or 'classical' music from Sub Saharan Africa in direct conversation with modern avant-garde compositions of the same era, especially 1950's - 1970's electronic compositions, anything from Jocy De Oliveira, John Cage, Gruppo D'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, Steve Reich etc."

C60 astonishing hard-dreaming live recording of Paul Daley from Leftfield playing at a warehouse party held in Napoli by United Tribes in '94.

"1994. "Prima del tempo perche' il tempo si e' fermato!" The end of Industrial Age is ECCHERECCA' III (WTF is this?! in Neapolitan).The scene is pre-apocalyptic. A huge warehouse, former premises of Alfa Romeo and symbol of industrial decline. Each and every member of United Tribes works in unison. The set design is nuts. The trees have been drenched in silver paint. A stage with a fence barrier that seems like something out of Blade Runner and a sound system of 20,000 turbo watts. ECCHERECCA' III is also a moment of musical experimentation and cultural unions.


In this Tape you are holding you can listen to Paul Daley’s performance as it reaches the epic levels that the situation demands. Space seems infinite. The flash is imposing. The sound bounces off the metal and perforates the imaginary forest where 3000 tribal kids dance in unison.

Ivan’s yells from the megaphones of the United Tribes management announce the vision: “What time is it in Naples now? It’s time to progress! The Psychic TV screen! This is the end of industrial age! This is the House evolution! Let’s house! What time is it in Napoli? 1994! We’re neither in London nor in Washington. We’re not in New York and we’re not in Cairo. We’re neither in Brussels nor in Amsterdam. We are not in Riccione. We are in Napoli! Ecchereccà III”.

When the infinite night is coming to an end a huge cold blast arrives in the gigantic warehouse. Physical and psychological. Shock. Are we inside or outside this dream? United Tribes was preparing the epilogue of its short but intense story."
