I'm excited to present my HarderFaster Christmas Party 2024 warm up set, what a cracking party that was, all for a good cause! Which raised a whopping £1900 for Nordoff & Robbins music therapy charity!

I recorded this just after the party and what a party it was! It starts off as a blend of progressive house, trance and melodic techno, steadily building up to a heady mix of progressive uplifting trance. Which filled the room up ready for getting everyone in the mood for an who's who line-up of Trance, Hard Trance/House and Techno DJs, with an incredible dance floor full of up-for-it party people. You all rocked! It was a real privilege to be invited to be on this line-up, and play once again for the HarderFaster crew, thanks for having me!

HarderFaster Xmas Party 2024 Warm Up Set

John 00 Fleming recently curated a top 20 alternative Trance chart for 2024 on Beatport. He mentioned on his page that it would be great if someone did a mix of the tracks in the chart that he could broadcast on his radio show as his guest mix, and got an amazing response. 

He put his favourite mixes entered into a playlist on his Soundcloud page and then he selected my mix to be played in the last hour on his radio show! What an honour!

Right from when I first started playing many moons ago, J00F's publicly open philosophy on DJing has been a big influence in the way I think about playing and putting music together, and no matter what time I'm scheduled to DJ how to read and play to a crowd. 

While my usual selection of music is often quite different to J00F's style, his influence is firmly embedded in my DJing psyche, and it has been a great honour to have the opportunity to put together a mix of tracks selected by one of my biggest idols in the trance scene. 

I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I did mixing it.

Composer's note:
In October 2018, the World Wildlife Federation published The Living Planet Report, which contained a bewildering fact: humanity has wiped out 60% of mammal, bird, fish and reptile populations worldwide since 1970. That figure is an average; for south and central America the figure is 89%. A 60% decline in human population would be the equivalent of emptying North America, South America, Africa, Europe, China and Oceania. Even with a human-based comparison, the scale of this decline is difficult to comprehend.

Theme & Transformations contains a reductive structuring principle, informed by the Living Planet Report statistic, which plays out over seven movements: a theme and six transformations. Each transformation contains 60% fewer notes than the previous movement but is otherwise near identical. The removal of notes forms the basic transformative process, but as the piece progresses, some pitches are transposed by octave and the duration, articulation and dynamics of other notes are altered. The first movement is energetically polystylistic and contains over four hundred and fifty notes. Any inherent stylistic plurality dissipates as the piece progresses, and by the sixth transformation only two notes remain.

This piece is not programmatic nor a direct political statement, but a creative exploration through which I gained a clearer understanding of how a rate of change of this magnitude can affect a musical environment.
