Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy in the Near East. Although social restrictions have been somewhat reduced since Mohammed bin Salman took over the reins of government, the country is still one of the lowest places in the world when it comes to women's rights, according to the Global Gender Gap Report.

Through its army, Saudi Arabia is the largest military power in the Middle East. Its military intervention in Yemen since 2015 is considered destabilizing and a contributing factor to the humanitarian catastrophe there. Despite the various criticisms of domestic and foreign policy, most governments in the Western world maintain good relations with Saudi Arabia because their countries are dependent on its oil. Saudi Arabia is one of the richest countries in the world thanks to its oil exports; In terms of gross domestic product per capita (adjusted for purchasing power), it was ranked 29th worldwide in 2021. The United Nations Development Program ranks Saudi Arabia as one of the countries with very high levels of human development.
