Balance Selections 162: Daniel Van Der Zwaag

Manchester (UK) based Mazayr has always felt a deep connection to music. Experimenting
with electronic music for well over a decade, his passion for creativity stems from much
earlier as a keen drummer in his youth. This love for rhythm naturally translated to dance
music and birthed a tireless focus on finding his own sound as a music producer.
Mazayr’s sound has arrived at a blend of emotional, uplifting and melancholic melodies,
intertwined with punchy, solid grooves. Influences come from an eclectic mix of genres and
as an artist his tracks are built to stand the test of time. His style has earned him debuts on
labels such as The Purr, Cigarette Music and Canopy Sounds, with more exciting projects
already in the pipeline.
As a DJ, Mazayr has frequented various venues across Manchester, including Pangaea
Festival and the infamous Sankeys nightclub. In 2019, he began hosting events and a mix
series under the Right Frequency banner to showcase melodic house music.

Klark Bent & Simon Sheldon fly the flag for Freebooter Lounge, while Dino Lenny & Grace Jones deliver a very special collaboration. Lui Mafuta presents This Ain’t Jazz, a boundary-pushing new EP that fuses live musicianship
with electronic sensibility - an exploration of jazz influence through a deeply personal and
collaborative lens. 

The release is available on digital platforms and as a limited vinyl edition.

At the heart of This ain’t Jazz is a long gestating idea: to bridge electronic music with an
organic, band oriented aesthetic. Lui Mafuta reunited with four longtime friends and
collaborators: Paul Janoschka, Felix Roos, Jonas Esser and Benedikt Jäckle - who all studied
music together in Mannheim before scattering across the globe. Under the loose collective
named Weiller, they came together once again to create a sound that lives between genres.

The EP is a globe spanning production. Piano was recorded on Paul Janoschka’s Steinway in
his Frankfurt apartment; trumpet and clarinet were tracked in a rural French studio with Felix
Roos; drums came from New York via Jonas Esser; and saxophone was laid down in Lui’s own
studio in Mannheim alongside Benedikt Jäckle. All elements were finally assembled and
shaped into a cohesive vision back in Mannheim.

“There’s less synth work on this one than usual,” Lui says. “Most of the textures come from
the instruments themselves and a lot of sample mangling. I wanted it to feel raw, human and
alive.”
Despite its title, This Ain’t Jazz is a love letter to jazz’s influence. “I called it that just to be
safe,” Lui jokes. “It isn’t jazz but it’s coming from that space.” The project also serves as a
reconnection to his roots: two of the four featured musicians are teenage friends from his
earliest days making music.

The German artist from Bremen likes to inject a sense of fun into everything she does, even her DJ name is loosely taken from the English words ‘be better’. Her famous live session, ‘Bebetta in Bed’, sees her live streaming in her pyjamas from her bed alongside guest acts like Super Flu and Florian Kruse. 

The majority of her productions can be found on the Monaberry label, but you will also find her work on Get Physical, Sincopat, and Anjunadeep. Her productions are full of inventive ideas, hook-laden melodies, and lush chords, it’s easy to see why her music resonate with such respected imprints. 

On this Balance Selections mix, Bebetta shines once again, with a colourful selection of tracks that serves as a natural extension of her personality.

Over the course of an electronic music obsession more than 20 years strong, Mark Slee has evolved a deep musical style that reflects a unique personality, blending intuition and introspection with a methodical approach to production and curation.

Fully committed to digging the troves of modern dance music, Slee aims to uncover releases that stand out. His monthly mix show on Proton Radio showcases his discoveries, with over 100 mixes presented in the past decade. In 2016, Slee joined forces with musical partner Atish to form the label Manjumasi. Debuting with his own Nocturne Belle EP, Manjumasi celebrates quirky dance music that explores new territory without forgetting the dance floor. Beyond Manjumasi, Slee's original productions and remixes have been released on such imprints as Cityfox, Seven Villas, Kindisch, Everything Will Be OK, Sound Avenue, Lost Diaries, Cosmic Society, Magician On Duty, Nugget, Where the Heart Is, Proton Music, and more. In addition to regular appearances on his San Francisco home turf, Slee's style has earned him DJ sets in notable locales, such as Kater Blau and Sisyphos in Berlin, Cityfox in New York, and Robot Heart.

Since 2016 Slee has also been developing immersive, spatial audio-visual production tools for systems of up to 32 channels via Envelop. Notable live performances with Envelop include MUTEK.SF and FORM Arcosanti.
