I named the genre Dream-Hop because I wanted to give it the dreamy feel of lo-fi with the hard drum patterns of hip-hop. Many things inspired the project: Anime (Sailor Moon, SAO), Japanese culture, Spirited Away, Nujabes, Maruchan ramen, sushi, Edinburgh, my muse Annasophia Robb, lofi producers (bsd.u, Entact, O K H O), vinyl records, and much more. I wanted to make a standalone dream-hop album that people can just relax or do homework to. The cover art is inspired by a cassette tape, and it features Venus from the Japanese anime Sailor Moon which I used to love as a kid.

Finally, I'd like to thank my fellow ODT collective mates Melrose and RSTY, as well as Bernard Willis and Entact for providing dope verses and remixes. Thanks to the whole ONEDAYTHOUGH family, to my family for always supporting me, and thank you to the fans for giving me a reason to do all this.

Description -

This album means a lot to me. First full length solo instrumental/beat album. Damn. It's been in the making officially for 7 months, unofficially since I was 16.

I don't like to write sappy things but if Take Care-era Drake taught me anything, it's worth giving an album a backstory and thanking those who helped you make it.

I officially started this project in the summer before my senior year in college. A lot of shit was happening. The album is a culmination of how I felt at the time, or how I've felt for a while. I wanted to make an intimate album. I hope the tone and visual aesthetics of the project convey some of the raw emotion that went into making it. [..] There are no standards I have to live up to except for the ones that I create for myself.

For now, it's just me. And what I've felt these past few months: the fear of not getting a job, the guilt I feel for basically failing my parents after they paid for my education, the want to let go and just pursue music instead of getting a legitimate job in anything not music related. The fear of dying alone. The loneliness of not being loved by someone. The want to be liked by people.

And of course other things inspired this album: anime (Akame ga Kill, Deadman Wonderland, W Dimension), Japan, lofi hip hop (bsd.u, swum, lord apex), nujabes, knxwledge, J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Dev Hynes, The Life of Pablo by Kanye West, Rodeo by Travis Scott, 90's/2000's R&B (Joe, Donnell Jones, Floetry, Goapele), Motown (Brass Construction, The Manhattans), jazz (Robert Glasper, John Coltrane, Ramsey Lewis, Pharaoh Sanders), Janet Jackson, Ten City, Jodeci, Yuji Ohno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jean Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Suehiro Maruo, and hundreds of other things that have filtered their way into my music one way or the other. The album cover is a drawing by Suehiro Maruo that I edited, and thought it reflected the album nicely.

I don't know what the overall mood of the project is. [..] I want people to listen to it when they are happy, sad, in love, nostalgic, partying, skating, or anything in between. Music affects all of us differently and that's what I love about it. [..] This album was made to reflect how I feel. How I've felt since I broke up with my ex 4 years ago - alone. But also to connect to anyone who has ever felt alone too.

But I can't front. My family is incredibly supportive. The pressure of getting a real job sucks, but they love my music. My friends are also very supportive. And the fans I have are amazing. Slowly but surely, I'll affect everyone. I want to become the best.

I made the entirety of this album in my dorm room in college. I produced it, mixed it, created the visuals for my live shows, edited the artwork, sent it out to press etc. etc. Don't limit yourself. Pursue your passion, and learn everything you can about it. Don't wait for inspiration, search for it constantly. And to anyone feeling alone — just know that you're not. "Everybody is something to somebody" and if not, you're somebody to me.

I dedicate this album to my family who continues to support and love me unconditionally — more than I deserve. I took the summer off to study beatmaking and this is the culmination of that effort. I would watch videos for seven hours a day every day of the week. I probably watched upwards of 300 hours of video tutorials from legends like Matt Weiss and Echo Soundworks. I also read the Art of Mixing by David Gibson. I dedicate this album to my family who continues to support and love me unconditionally — more than I deserve. LNR_[01] is the first in a series of beat tapes I plan to make. The official title is 'Late Night Ramen', a nod to bsd.u's 'Late Night Bumps' series. The first installment consists of random loosies that didn't make it to Otaku, as well as newer demos that didn't make it to my next album. This is also why you might hear some familiar patterns. As I try to match a synth riff or vocal stab to the perfect track, I naturally re-use some of those elements in an effort to find its "home" so to speak. And since these have demos from before Otaku, you'll hear some familiar musical phrases, etc. So hopefully it doesn't sound unoriginal, but provides another insight into my music making process to the listener. And personally I think it's cool to hear how an artists' demos develop, where they re-use certain music elements etc. etc.

I originally didn't plan to release any of this music since I try strive as close to perfection as I can on my major releases, but Knx once said that there really isn't any reason to sit on any demos, which I agree with. I figured some people might enjoy listening to these demos. So this isn't an official album or anything, just a random beat tape that people can hopefully vibe to. Which is why I probably won't draw up a .txt file with all the sample information, inspirations, etc. like I usually do with my other albums or serious projects since the majority of the tracks were made in the 'Otaku' time frame. But who knows, if I get enough requests maybe I will. Since it's all for u.

This album means a lot to me. First full length solo instrumental/beat album. Damn. It's been in the making officially for 7 months, unofficially since I was 16.

I don't like to write sappy things but if Take Care-era Drake taught me anything, it's worth giving an album a backstory and thanking those who helped you make it.

I officially started this project in the summer before my senior year in college. A lot of shit was happening. The album is a culmination of how I felt at the time, or how I've felt for a while. I wanted to make an intimate album. I hope the tone and visual aesthetics of the project convey some of the raw emotion that went into making it. [..] There are no standards I have to live up to except for the ones that I create for myself.

For now, it's just me. And what I've felt these past few months: the fear of not getting a job, the guilt I feel for basically failing my parents after they paid for my education, the want to let go and just pursue music instead of getting a legitimate job in anything not music related. The fear of dying alone. The loneliness of not being loved by someone. The want to be liked by people.

And of course other things inspired this album: anime (Akame ga Kill, Deadman Wonderland, W Dimension), Japan, lofi hip hop (bsd.u, swum, lord apex), nujabes, knxwledge, J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Dev Hynes, The Life of Pablo by Kanye West, Rodeo by Travis Scott, 90's/2000's R&B (Joe, Donnell Jones, Floetry, Goapele), Motown (Brass Construction, The Manhattans), jazz (Robert Glasper, John Coltrane, Ramsey Lewis, Pharaoh Sanders), Janet Jackson, Ten City, Jodeci, Yuji Ohno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jean Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Suehiro Maruo, and hundreds of other things that have filtered their way into my music one way or the other. The album cover is a drawing by Suehiro Maruo that I edited, and thought it reflected the album nicely.

I don't know what the overall mood of the project is. [..] I want people to listen to it when they are happy, sad, in love, nostalgic, partying, skating, or anything in between. Music affects all of us differently and that's what I love about it. [..] This album was made to reflect how I feel. How I've felt since I broke up with my ex 4 years ago - alone. But also to connect to anyone who has ever felt alone too.

But I can't front. My family is incredibly supportive. The pressure of getting a real job sucks, but they love my music. My friends are also very supportive. And the fans I have are amazing. Slowly but surely, I'll affect everyone. I want to become the best.

I made the entirety of this album in my dorm room in college. I produced it, mixed it, created the visuals for my live shows, edited the artwork, sent it out to press etc. etc. Don't limit yourself. Pursue your passion, and learn everything you can about it. Don't wait for inspiration, search for it constantly. And to anyone feeling alone — just know that you're not. "Everybody is something to somebody" and if not, you're somebody to me.

LNR_[03] is the third installment in my "Late Night Ramen" beat tape series. The title is a nod to bsd.u's 'Late Night Bumps' series. This album means a lot to me because it is dedicated to my grandfather Jorge who passed away last November. It's been almost a year now and I wanted to release it on the day he died - 11/7. The number seven has always been important to me because I'm actually the 7th. I wanted to release the album on the day he died so he could be reincarnated in a sense as something eternal - music. If I make a classic, he'll live in our memories forever since he's on the cover of the album. So I decided to make this a full fledged album unlike the other LNRs by drawing up liner notes and sample information because I wanted to do something special in his memory, as well as the significance that the number 3 has in my life. 

After he passed, I became fascinated with the impermanence of being. I researched things like destiny and astrology, tarot cards, and numerology. I re-read "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" by Kundera. I tried to investigate the meaning of death in different contexts, including Zen Buddhism, and find a way to incorporate it into the music. I ended up typing in my information online and found out that my life path number is 3, and the number has become very important to me as of late. I also found out that my zodiac sign Scorpio is affiliated with the death card in a tarot deck. I'm still trying to find out what this all means, if it even means anything.

And of course this album was inspired by a ton of other things: Anime (Darling in the Franxx, Saint Seiya, Tsurezure Children, Kimi no Todoke, Seven Deadly Sins, My Hero Academia, Erased), TV Shows (Parks & Rec, The OC, Futurama, Rick & Morty), genres (Future Bass, Lofi HipHop, Deep House, UK Garage, Acid House, Lofi House, EDM, Indie Rock), fashion houses like CDG, Prada, and Chanel, artists like Ross From Friends, Burial, Tim Maia, 88 Rising, Yumi Zouma, Ella Mai, Giggs, Lil Uzi Vert, Birocratic, Toshifumi Hinata, A$AP Rocky, Mall Grab, bsd.u, SwuM, Tomppabeats, Shamana, T.I., UGK, James Clarke, Rico Nasty, Jamie XX, Knxwledge, J Dilla, Frank Ocean, Larry Heard, Lil Wayne, SOPHIE, Men I Trust, Carseat Headrest, Playboi Carti, and tons more artists have influenced me and filtered their way onto this album.

DESIRE is the second album in my DEVOTION trilogy. I've been working on it for close to 3 years now and it has gone through so many revisions in that time. If you had read my other letters, I trashed the concept I had for this album in 2017 and released half of it in the form of LNR_[02]. It didn't live up to my expectations at the time. I've always struggled with self-acceptance and confidence issues and it was at an all time low for me at that point. This album has been weighing on my shoulders for all of those 2 1/2 years. It hung over me like a dark cloud because every time I thought about it or spoke about it, I treated it like it was the one that was going to blow me up. "This time for sure.." "It'll definitely get me there.." All toxic thoughts. Thoughts I couldn't even view as toxic because I had lost myself in my work and expectations. So the album is a story of self-hate and of self-growth. A reflection of self-doubt and dealing with all of the negative emotions that have come with the disappointment I have been feeling for the past two years. A battle against the feeling of always coming up short and an introspective study on my obsession with a past I can't change and the fear of a future I don't know.

The album reflects on the nature of desire and the Zen Buddhist principle of how attachment is the root of all suffering, especially when it comes to personal goals and past relationships. It deals with sexual desire, career desire, materialistic desire, emotional desire, and a wide range of other desires. I use my music to confront my own selfish desires and the dichotomy it carries in everyday life. I also investigate the theme of desire in the context of my own religious faith, not only of Zen, but confronting and challenging Christian themes and ideas which are woven throughout the record. The struggle with my own dichotomy of striving to be humble, yet wanting to be best/the center of attention (when it comes to my music). Striving to be non-materialistic, yet wanting to buy nearly every VST and synthesizer I come across or wanting to buy Balenciaga or CDG clothing. Striving to be saintly yet embody all of the seven sins as I am so jealous, proud, lustful, etc. towards so many things. Alan Watts said that Christianity has made guilt a virtue, and whatever your thoughts of Alan Watts (i.e. entertainer vs philosopher) I think it's an interesting point. The guilt I feel for wanting all of these things when I was raised Christian extends itself into so many other aspects of my life. Aspects that I can't speak about at the moment out of respect for personal and familial relationships.  But I guess all of this is just the nature of being human.

'DEVOTION' is not *technically* in the DEVOTION Trilogy, however, I still wanted to compile some loosies in between albums because people were asking me to put them on Spotify and I have no idea when 'DESTINY' will come out lmao. I would say it's like the B-Side to 'DESIRE', with songs like "MASCULIN ET FEMININ" originally slated for the album but I just couldn't figure out the mixing in time. The song still means a lot though, since it was really the first song that I wrote/produced/played myself in 2018. It took me like a year to complete it and I did over 500 takes for the vocals (and still came out like trash lmaoo sorry about that). This is also the first album I've made that hasn't used a sample as the main element to a track. It's still me having fun with guitar and continuing similar production elements from the last album. I made the album art with a stock image with chains cut out and placed all over, tying back into the themes of 'DESIRE'. 

I called it 'DEVOTION' because I wanted to keep playing on the alliterative nature of the trilogy, but also because it signifies the incessant/toxic devotion I have for music. Devoting everything in myself to the craft, constantly searching for perfection and to become better. Hence the chains - feeling chained to music in an unhealthy way, yet the iridescent image allows it to superficially trick the listener. I liked the dichotomy between these two images, something cold and heavy like chains but flipping it to become light and bright among the image. The two sides to the process - the feeling of being chained down/the weight, as well as the lightness that comes from actually producing work that I'm proud of. The physical and the metaphysical. Anyway, I'm sure someone smarter than me can piece these themes together by listening to the music so I'll leave it at that. I hope you like it.
