This episode is a reading of an article previously published in the Massachusetts Music Educators Journal, titled “Emo Rap and Journaling: A New Foundation for Social-Emotional Learning” and reprinted in NAfME’s Teaching Music in the State Opus column. 

Excerpt: “As we know all too well, the social isolation caused by the COVID-19 has had a profound effect on our students. There have been several published studies stating that depression and anxiety among K-12 students has skyrocketed since March 2020…With the power of music, we have the ability to not only address these debilitating conditions with students, but to teach students how to reflect on their social-emotional state, and to use music as an outlet and a powerful vehicle towards healing…Once I explained the idea of catharsis, my students instantly agreed that Emo Rap was a way for them to release feelings of sadness, loss, and angst.”

For a while, I had no idea what to do for the sample project. All of the snippets I wanted to use were either the wrong key or the wrong tempo. But, after finding a more subtle clip from Taylor Swift's "imgonnagetyouback," I found a way to make everything work together.

I included this track because I felt it was the first project that moved me out of my comfort zone on Soundtrap. I wound up using loops that didn't seem to fit together at first and I like the end product.

i used a bunch of samples from different songs, & made my own kick. i wen for a more house/phonk style on this song.

I spent a while struggling to write lyrics for this project, but after spiraling a little bit at 3am I wound up rewriting the song "That Funny Feeling" by Bo Burnham with lyrics that fit my theme(s). I'm no vocalist but I do like what I wrote, so I felt I should include it.
