A truly talented artist with huge following and global appeal, Alex O’Rion continues to go from strength to strength within the world of underground dance. With his work spanning some 15 years of commercial releases, the Dutch master is a welcome returnee to Meanwhile with a stellar quartet of original tracks.

A regular across the industry’s finest purveyors of modern and cerebral progressive house music, Alex O’Rion has constantly found his music featured on such esteemed imprints as Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat, Guy J’s Lost & Found and Nick Warren’s Hope. A regular visitor to the upper echelons of the Beatport charts, over a million Spotify streams in 2020 and 4,000 followers points to broad appeal and wide-ranging support.

Now returning to Meanwhile after a trio of remixes for label head-honchos GMJ & Matter on June 2020’s “Gauntlet” and February 2021’s “The Path”, Alex O’Rion now returns to the label with a devastating 4-track original EP of unrivalled quality.

The “Echium” title track is a blistering sub-bass monster that drives along powerfully on a bed of ticking hi-hats and chest-thumping kick. Building in momentum, smooth pads and effortless synth lines flow across the 8-minute piece before revelling in a stripped-back breakdown. Picking up the pace again in the third movement, gorgeous harmonic overtones layer delicately across each other, borne of never-ending delay sweeps.

“Stranded” continues the powerful rhythmic narrative and otherworldly sonic landscape before a percussive loop provides subtle melodic phrasing. Shifting synth sequences bisect the left-right spectrum as waves of white noise fall against a rocky outcrop of percussive hats. Melodic lines continue to evolve in delicate patterns into the second half in a sonic palette of sheer bliss.

A sumptuous bassline groove propels “The Chase” through its hypnotic paces, accompanied by a chugging rhythmic backdrop. Simultaneously, gentle synth motifs pulsate in side-chained synchronicity as a rich symphony of sound swells into the second half against a plucked earworm phrase. The result is a dynamic and devastating club-friendly track that is sure to inspire a multitude of hands-in-the-air moments.

“The Serpent” ends the quadrilogy with its rippling sound effects that cascade in spiral patterns against a melodious foreground. Delicate percussive patterns marry with a deep resonant kick to provide a rhythmic anchor, giving freeform synth motifs the opportunity to express a meandering sonic voyage that reaches a powerful crescendo at the midpoint. Hitting its stride again in the third movement with additional melodic sequencing, the result is a charismatic end to an outstanding original EP."

Above & Beyond release their long-awaited collaboration with anamē, ‘Gratitude’ (feat. Marty Longstaff) on April 14 through Anjunabeats.

This collaboration marks the debut of anamē: a new alias from Swedish hitmaker Marcus Schössow and production partner Thomas Sagstad. 'Gratitude' also marks the return of Sunderland singer-songwriter Marty Longstaff to Anjunabeats, the voice of Above & Beyond's 'Tightrope' and 'Flying By Candlelight'.

Debuted during Above & Beyond's sold-out London festival at The Drumsheds in 2021, 'Gratitude' is both a jubilant vocal ballad and a tough, dancefloor filler. During Above & Beyond's winter tour, which sold nearly 70,000 tickets across the USA, the significance of this record to the group's dedicated fan community was immediately apparent. It has cemented itself as a future classic for Jono, Tony and Paavo, standing alongside some of their best-loved anthems like 'You Got To Go' and 'Thing Called Love'. 

Marcus Schössow's production resumé is extensive: he's collaborated with all three members of Swedish House Mafia, as well as Bassjackers, and has released on Revealed Records, Spinnin', SIZE, Armada and Axtone. 

More commonly found performing under the moniker The Lake Poets, Marty Longstaff rose to prominence with the moving acoustic ballad ‘Shipyards’. The song accompanies the opening credits to the sleeper hit Netflix documentary, ’Sunderland ’Till I Die’.

Comprised of Emanuel Satie, Maga, Sean Doron, Tim Engelhardt and Yulia Niko, four out of five members of the group come together on Disconnect. Following the release of the Starlight EP in May, Scenarios collaborate with songwriter, singer, and producer Hannah Noelle on vocals.

Maga, Sean Doron, Tim Engelhardt and Emanuel Satie deliver a warm but club-driven vibe on Disconnect. Brimming with emotive chords, tinkling piano notes and smooth drums, it’s the kind of tune that’s appropriate for a peak-time festival set under the sun or a packed-out afterparty. Hannah Noelle’s velvety vocals evoke a balmy atmosphere, snaking through a low-slung bassline and bright synthlines. A tangible blend of spiritual and vibrant energy, synonymous with the evolving collective.

Individually, they are known as Maga, Sean Doron, Yulia Niko, Tim Engelhardt and Emanuel Satie, each of whom are established performers in their own right. Together, they become Scenarios. Only two releases in, Black Coffee, John Digweed and streaming platform Cercle have supported the label, while peak spots on Beatport’s Top 10 Chart have proved consistent. Born in France, Maga’s discography boasts releases on Flying Circus and Get Physical. Israel’s Sean Doron has found a home on Damian Lazarus’ Rebellion imprint, whilst his Monochrome event series continues to flourish. Cologne’s Tim Engelhardt is a mainstay of German label Stil Vor Talent, as well as Diynamic. Guy J makes a much anticipated return to Sudbeat for the first time sinks his 2009 "Pleasurety" ep. The Bedrock artist is one of the most consistent and productive artists of today and 2011 was yet another bumper year for the Israeli. At the close of the year we were treated to "Meridian" his co-production with Henry Saiz on Bedrock, his remix of Sian's "Sacred Geography" on Octopus and his stunning "Soul Of Arp" release on Funk D'Void's Outpost Recordings. Having already kicked of 2012 with a bumper remix package for Bedrock, we find Guy already in blistering form. His latest double-header for Sudbeat kicks off with "High," a powerful techie uplifting number that grooves throughout and, whilst it does tempt us with a 'take off', the track teasingly never peaks. Cocoon artist Marc Marzenit however, shoots us into the stratosphere. Building the intensity throughout his mix, its powerful drums and dramatic melody create an arena rocking moment. Guy's second original "Pathos" is a wonderfully warm and atmospheric number. Sweeping strings and staccato melody give a warm and euphoric feeling. Bringing a similar feeling with his warping baseline and dreamy melody is Sudbeat artist Luis Junior.

Returning to production duties for the 4th release on their evolving Meanwhile imprint, GMJ and Matter present "Eldarin". A pair of remixes come from Sri Lankan and Colombian talents.

Hitting their straps on numerous occasions across a broad and celebrated career, GMJ and Matter continue to make waves in Port Phillip Bay with their distinctive and renowned musical style. Joining forces on over 50 production credits for the likes of Anjunadeep, Balance Music and Proton Music, GMJ and Matter's combined talent is a formidable force. Now reprising the success of their "Lost on Origin" and "Gauntlet" EPs for Meanwhile, the pair come together for a third time. "Eldarin" is a typically dynamic affair with all the hallmarks that have made the pair such revered names in the underground dance scene. A glorious bouncing bassline groove and ticking hi-hat percussion lays the foundation for densely textured pads to weave their way across the near 9-minute offering. Redolent in trademark delays and reverb tails, subtle motifs meander across proceedings before an extended piano sequence cascades across the breakdown. Building to a crescendo at the mid-point, a driving third movement introduces glorious white-noise washes and driving beat, combining with melodic elements to evocative and mesmerising effect.

A multiple award-winning DJ, Subandrio Sinhawansa has become a force to be reckoned with via the undulating musical tapestries that represent his work behind the decks. A seasoned traveller with performances across Middle East and his Sri Lankan home, contemporaneously, a high-profile production career finds Subandrio with over a double-century of credits to his name as he joins the catalogues of some of the finest imprints including Darin Epsilon's Perspectives Digital, Cid Inc.'s Replug and Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music. Now making his Meanwhile debut, the Subandrio remix is a highly intelligent reworking of "Eldarin" that retains the rhythmic and bassline integrity of the original while introducing a swathe of new melodic material that bristles with arpeggiated sequences that shimmer in delays and subtle new phrasing. The result is a commanding rework that launches powerfully into the post-breakdown denouement with heavy beat and strong dancefloor character.

Kamilo Sanclemente and Dabeat represent another high-calibre musical pairing. From Cali, southwest of the Bogota capital, the duo has been a mainstay of the Colombian underground dance movement and beyond South American borders. With successful careers under their respective solo guises and amassing over a half-century of combined productions, Sanclemente and Dabeat have found their music allied to some of the industry's finest blue-chip imprints that include Mango Alley, UV and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden. A Meanwhile debut finds the pair on scintillating form as chugging, head-shaking rhythm creates a vibrant backdrop for fizzing white-noise washes and sweeping pads to roll across the Kamilo Sanclemente and Dabeat remix. Gentle melodic flourishes caress the mid-range with style and panache as they rise in prominence through an open filter that ushers in a sublime new melodic groove in the third movement alongside a high-energy counterpoint motif and striking cadence. Alex's Meanwhile remixes of GMJ & Matter’s 'Gauntlet' were a notable highlight alongside a stellar 2020 and now with his inimitable style and flair, his remix of 'The Path' builds on the deep undulating groove of the original while building a new bassline component that bristles with intent, emotion and dancefloor prowess. Using the central arpeggiated motif of the track, richly textured pads provide new melodic direction as white-noise washes crash against the rhythmic bedrock in pulsating waves. The resultant interpretation finds O’Rion at his consummate best with a flawless mix of technique and precision.

Hailing from a long line of talented Dutch producers, Alex O’Rion is one of the brightest stars to recently emerge on Hernan Cattaneo’s SUDBEAT label. He started to experiment with music at 14 yrs old, inspired by Sasha, Nick Warren and John Digweed. Although his first appearance was in the trance scene, Alex soon found out that deep progressive music was his passion.
