It was morning, bright and calm, with no sign of the deluge that had taken place the previous night. The sun was still low in the sky, but Robot City was alive and active. He was in the very heart of it here, the hub upon which the wheel of the city turned. He could see the aqueduct that had brought him cutting through the city like a spoke, and he could see other aqueducts, other spokes, slicing through the wheel of the city. And he began to think of the areas between the spokes as quadrants. Robots in large numbers hurried quickly through the streets, always going somewhere, always busy with predetermined tasks. Many of them were disappearing into the treatment plant. He moved a small distance from his exit point, then looked back at the reservoir, shocked to find a forest there! Then he realized that the forest had been planted above the reservoir, the land area serving double duty. But why a forest? Not for robots, certainly. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the large, wheeled vehicle that had been tracking him within the reservoir moving through the exit point to the outside. He looked back at the city, then up at the forest. He would find escape in its random chaos.

We wait in the darkness for the signal to begin. I wonder what’s taking so long. Behind me, I hear somebody whispering. Our silky gowns are rustling softly as we, the graduating seniors, adjust our hats, hair, and nerves. We stand nervously in two lines that curve from the back of the auditorium, out into the hallway, and halfway up a flight of stairs. In alphabetical order for the very last time, the boys in gowns of navy blue, the girls in silver. I’m one of the first in line because I have to sit on the stage. Even though it’s hot, I’m shivering in the darkness while we wait for the lights to come up to announce the beginning of the ceremony. I close my eyes, but the darkness seems like it’s trying to grab me. I blink, and the shadows are breathing on my neck, chasing through my thoughts. I let the shadows walk me back through the last two years, through loss, pain, death, and humiliation. I’ve got dark memories of fire and blood running in slow motion through my head. I think about Rob, who died in a car crash in November of our junior year. I think about my Andy, my dear sweet Andy, who left me—left us all—the following April. And I try not to think about my own dark stain that I know will never be erased.

They met at the shores of the Licca. Oberlin came from the north, via
Augusta Vindelicorum, Xu from the south via Tridentum. Like travellers
of old on the Via Raetia just with the exception that their luggage
contained some electronic devices, Xu brought a couple of analog
synthesizers and some looper and fx pedals with him, Oberlin had a 9HE
Eurorack together with his sleeping bag on his back and a guitar under
the arm. Nights were quiet, you could hear the river flow and some
nightbirds from the trees. The two travellers did not want to disturb
the silence too much; instead they tried to take up the atmosphere
around them and to resonate it with their electronic and musical means.
So here you can listen to the musical diary of their time spent together
on this ancient roman street... and when the two parted, they knew it
was not forever. They would continue their journey sometime somewhere.
