The open-minded attitude of understanding the World of Jazz, Soul, Funk, Disco and even Hip Hop makes much easier to figure out what may have caused the emergency of the Detroit Techno and Electro scene. This is the case of Lamont Norwood, also known as DJ Di'jital, who grew up with all these groove influences.

Of course, it was the sounds of Kraftwerk in a first moment, and after that the Street Dance culture that guided him – mainly with the Electro-Funk classics of the beginning of the eighties. Fascinated, Norwood was caught by a whole movement that started with the Funk culture, but which roots lies miles ahead. Largely influenced by the street sounds of Afrika Bambaata, Newcleus and Cybotron that swirled into his mind during the eighties, Lamont decided to stretch to the boundaries and started a deep journey of musical researches.

His DJ story begun even before the acquaintance of the turntables at the beginning of the nineties: he started with double tape decks at a parent’s house with very limited options. But the natural mixing skills and the density of his musical background took him far beyond his dreams: about more than ten years ago, he became a professional DJ, even if his professional highlight was yet to come.

Before the so called professional ascension, he played tons of House parties as a Cabaret DJ. To be really integrated on the scene, it was just a question of time. He quickly shifted behind the decks and became part of the most important professionals behind the electro scene from the nineties. His melting pot of electro funk, techno, booty and ghetto tech elements with scratching skills created a very unique ambiance which DJ Di'jital drove the crowds wherever he wanted to.

In 1996, Lamont Norwood integrated the brilliant Aux 88 as their DJ and had the pleasure to experience live shows with them for years. At the same year of 1996, he released his first track, “Radar2Bass” which, according to his statements, was meant to be a “Sinister Techno Bass”. It appeared on the “Xperience De Bass II” EP by Direct Beat, the same label through where he released his first single: “Prototype”, a kind of definition for his sound, a free sound that was made to be included on the open-minded DJ’s repertories, which were really free to do whatever they wanted. He also released several other productions, remixes and a couple of CDs through Direct Beat records, one of the most important labels of the electro scene.

Mechatronicast #19: DJ Di'jital

Hip-shaking, infectiously groovy ghetto-tech, paired with electro madness is whats on the menu this time, served up by the elusive Cyan85. Hailing from the depths of eastern Germany, Cyan85 has emerged from this industrialised and cold environment with a sound that radiates pure dance energy. Using a variety of vintage-synths and drum machines, he creates a bouncy and energetic machine-funk that stands as a modern take on that classic Detroit style. His production process is one of improvisation at its core, which might help to explain his great versatility in music making, ranging from dreamy downtempo pieces to in-your-face bangers. This mix is a tour-de-force of ghetto-tech and electro, demonstrating that Cyan85 knows how to light the booth on fire.

DJ Unisex is a 24 year-old, living in Leipzig, Germany. He has been DJing for 5 years now though has been involved in music since his teen years, participating in various bands. He eventually landed on Electronic music as his genre of choice and has since been producing music under the alias.  In 2021 he co-formed the new label @Self-Learning-System with his friend called Friedrich Ernst and started a residency on @CallshopRadio

Chris Roman, aka 214, has a habit of getting lost in his studio, which happens to be tucked into the same mystical foothills as the David Lynch town of Twin Peaks, a location whose presence looms across much of Roman’s audio narrative, deftly playing foil to his creative heritage as a Miami native grounded in that area’s Electro scene. 

Since his production debut in 2002, Roman has cultivated a substantial discography of future dance floor thump and heady sci-fi vapors with releases on notable labels such as Frustrated Funk, Klakson, Central Processing Unit (CPU), Shipwrec, 20:20 Vision, and Touchin Bass. He's also appeared on three Fabric compilations, including an exclusive track commissioned for Steffi’s highly lauded Fabric 94 mix. 

Though clubs all over the world have hosted 214’s hardware-heavy live sets, he’s also known for working dance floors with dexterous precision for anyone lucky enough to catch him behind the decks.  

214’s upcoming projects include EPs for Klakson and Frustrated Funk.

Hailing from the rough depths of Eastern Germany, Cyan85 brings a diverse sound to the thriving electro scene that drifts effortlessly from soulful and warm sun-drenched anthems, right through to in-the-red, robotic slammers.

It’s easy to draw parallels between the industrialised East and the infamous US area code 313. The discarded remains of a once-thriving center of manufacturing provide many havens for electro lovers in the form of abandoned factories and warehouses. Similar to the Detroit forefathers from whom he draws his influences, it was in these concrete spaces that Cyan85 first cut his teeth a little over half a decade ago.

Since then, he has garnered a name for himself as a capable and versatile DJ, traversing multiple genres as he brings his sets from dreamy, downtempo lushness to hard-hitting machine-driven funk. Eclecticism is a deep part of his musical identity and one that is clearly apparent in his debut EP “Bay of Sampieri”, released on the seminal, Berlin-based label Voitax.

Cyan85’s bouncy, energetic sound comes from a music-making process with live, hardware-based improvisation at its heart. Nestled in his cosy studio next to Kalif Storch Club, he jams out on a variety of vintage synths and drum machines. He then edits, processes and augments using a collection of software plugins to create his own, modernised take on that classic Detroit style.

For the 532nd episode of @DarkScienceElectro we check out a live performance recording of @cyphon14 & @obzerv

All tracks written and performed live by Cyphon and Obzerv using two Elektron Digitakts, one Elektron Digitone and a MAM MB33 running through an old Boss delay box. The set is comprised entirely of unreleased and original music.

Cyphon and Obzerv are a pair of 21 and 22-year-old producers from London, who have collaborated since high school. Having experimented with a few different genres – after discovering Electro they found the sound they wanted to specialize in crafting. Through their music they express their experience of growing up in the Age of the Internet, taking inspiration from science fiction stories and global current affairs alike. 

Over the past year they have broadcast live worldwide on Threads Radio and taken their act to club dance-floors, where they have supported Radioactive Man and Afrodeutsche. Cyphon recently released his debut single ‘Red Zone’ on audiovisual label Patchbay Records, and a debut back-to-back EP from the pair is forthcoming on independent vinyl imprint Gunfinger Food. This man's love for 808s & synthesizers became very evident with, one of our favourite albums of the year, his Voitax release "Lucid Intervals".

We hope to see this man live in action behind the decks in 2021 & are very much looking forward to his upcoming 12" releases on several labels. But for now, he will curate our 3y anniversary edition in felicitous fashion.
