The title track is a drill in percussive practice, a repetition session for body release. With furious inhale, a grating of timbres and captivating clap-backs are sucked in through the senses, trickling down to the toes. Lured by swampy wubs of sub, amoebic roots in drums and primal hymns drenched out past the horizon. The essence of erosion seeps through on the flip; Nap’s imitable vocals finding a home in a hypnotic habitat, stretched duration and gorgeous frolic. A drop into dubby bliss; shrieking skritches and distortions fly rogue, yet discover curious harmony. 
 
An essential disc for freaky folk; head in the clouds and feet dug deep.

DC Promo Tracks #933: Ryota OPP "Midnight Theater"

Bochum Welt’s 2019 LP ‘Seafire’ and its accompanying remix album are two of the Central Processing Unit label’s most beloved releases. However, links between the two parties run far deeper than just those records.

You see, the tracks that Gianluigi Di Costanzo cut as Bochum Welt in the 1990s and 2000s are in the very DNA of the celebrated Sheffield imprint. Bochum Welt’s drops on labels like Rephlex made for some of the most celebrated electronic music releases of the era and went on to influence producers the world over - including many of those who have turned up on CPU since it launched in 2012.

As such, it makes sense that two of the most crucial EPs from Bochum Welt’s first wave are now being given new life by CPU. ‘Desktop Robotics’ and ‘Feelings On A Screen’ initially emerged in 1997 via Aphex Twin’s Rephlex imprint. Now, Di Costanzo has curated this special CPU release to celebrate both of those EPs making it to 25. This is a reissue with a twist, though. While ‘Desktop Robotics / Feelings On A Screen’ features many crucial cuts from the original pressings, the record also serves up other gems gathered from Bochum Welt’s original master tapes - all of which have never previously been released on vinyl.

The ‘Desktop Robotics’ cuts which make for the record’s first half are dreamy, impressionistic things. On this quartet, Bochum Welt plays painterly synth work off of idiosyncratic drum programming to illuminating effect. The opening title-track, for instance, blooms from a clattering, distorted beat into an icily beguiling electronic soundscape, a vibe which carries through to following number ‘HMT (202 Mix)’.

Things become more weightless on ‘Leafs Brought By The Wind’, a potent vignette where you can almost see the leaves falling amidst its reverb-drenched haze. We then get ethereal ‘Marylebone (Demo Version)’. Anyone who’s heard the iteration of ‘Marylebone’ which appeared on Bochum Welt’s 2017 LP ‘April’ will be pleasantly surprised by this alternate mix. Here the track pulls away from pretty post-minimalist piano composition to widescreen ambience - it’s so warm and intimate that it feels like peeking behind a curtain to observe an artist at work.

Things ramp up a notch with the tracks taken from in and around ‘Feelings On A Screen’. The title cut kicks off the record’s second half in limber fashion, its nimble percussion programming dancing around a pulsing bassline. Like A Tim’s mix of ‘Greenwich’ is still as much of a party-starter as it was on the original ‘Feelings On A Screen’ release, with the Djax-Up-Beats veteran setting buoyant rhythm work against a playful, eccentric lead-line. 

Between these tunes we are treated to one of the gems of the Bochum Welt discography. In 2007, Di Costanzo split an EP with Heinrich Mueller, an artist best known as Drexciya’s Gerald Donald. That record featured Mueller’s ‘Z Version’ of Bochum Welt’s ‘Saint’, and the track’s appearance here, with machine gun bass burbling alongside strange textures, joins the dots between Di Constanzo’s style and the pulsating machine-funk that Donald helped popularise. Things close out with ‘North’, a frostily beautiful ambience which makes for a fitting bookend to this album when taken alongside ‘Desktop Robotics’.

This 25th anniversary re-release of Bochum Welt’s ‘Desktop Robotics’ and ‘Feelings On A Screen’ EPs reminds us that, while time may have passed, the appeal of Bochum Welt’s electronic music remains as strong as ever.

Our next exclusive podcast comes from someone with a long and close relationship with Dekmantel: back in 2007 the mighty Aadvarck ('Varke', for his friends) headlined out first ever party. After 30 years on the decks and in the studio few do it better than this man, who has released on Skudge, Delsin, Rush Hour and together with Steven de Peven acquired quite a lot of attention with the Rednose Distrikt collective (which will see a very unique one-off come-back performance at Dekmantel Festival this summer). First and foremost he is a DJ though, as this mix - recorded during one of the final nights at Amsterdam's Trouw -  proves. 

Over the years, Aardvark has dabbled in jungle and breaks, trip hop and broken beat, but nowadays it is fierce house and techno that he lays down. This mix starts with some soul infused house sounds before energetically switching up through piano jams, spangled techno, rave and retro. Never staying in one place for long, it is a lithe affair that fluidly flips the mood with every other record and keeps you on your toes throughout. Filled with new records and old records, classics and overlooked gems, this is a whirlwind two hour ride that will help you fly through Monday on a real high.

Irish-born mystic Peter Power finds a suitable home on the record label / psychedelic familia that is Multi Culti.

Mr. Power made a name for himself in Berlin as resident and booker at Kleine Reise and subsequently Loftus Hall. Out of this flowered Kleine Reise Records, the initial portal for his manifestations, and a network of connections that have made him a cult DJs DJ. After a wholesome 5 years in Berlin, and with the jungle in his sights, he continued his journey to Brazil, where he currently drifts within the chaotic harmony of Voodoohop, home to Multi Culti mainstay Thomash, who offers up a fantastic remix here in support. 

Jungles of Ufordia presents a trip into an experimental universe, into the dark realm of sacred light, an esoteric space between familiar realities, the place of paradox and cosmic birth. Put that in your pipe and smoke in it.

It really shows the breadth of his musical knowledge and mining skills as after the last 2 we were thinking surely you can’t have another 2 hours of unheard gems yet he delivers here in style. There are a couple of really fun oddball covers amongst some bassy deepness and a beautiful Bill Nelson track that we didn't know, to open with.  xxx

„Amygdala“ is Koze’s Sgt. Pepper. It’s an unreal 78-minute walk through Koze’s mind, complete with moods, intensities, sounds and scenes as yet unheard of. It feels more like a double album, urging you to turn over and change the records time and time again. "Amygdala" amazes by its sheer musicality, deepness, and its  ethereal sound design; it’s a kaleidoscope of a great variety of soundscapes where you keep discovering new nuances even after listening to it a thousand times. Nobody else could unite artists like Caribou and Dirk von Lotzow, Hildegard Knef and Mathew Dear, Ada and Milosh in such an organic way and on one and the same record as Koze did. There’s never been anything like it.

He weaves new garments around the a capella parts of his guests, garments that only he can tailor, and that’s how the album, for all the diversity of its artists, sounds consistently homogeneous and in the true style of Kosi Kos. It’s all about “the courage to dare”, about letting voices resonate undisguised in all their authentic peculiarity.  About creating  truthfulness.

How much can you cut out, when does the flame die down? On the other hand, under which circumstances could it even burn for ever?

The album, which in large parts has been composed in a Spanish fishing village, starts off with Balinese gamelan sounds from which a relaxed discoid bass peels off, caressed by mystic backwards basslines, balafon resonances and slide guitar chords. You can hear the ceaseless chirping, twittering and cheeping from all the treetops of Koze's exotic jungle.
