Orson Hentschel is a German composer and producer based in Düsseldorf. Having started to play classical piano at an early age, he now mainly composes electronic, experimental and film music. His debut "Feed The Tape" is strongly influenced by Classical Minimal Music. Especially the compository methods of Steve Reich such as phase variations, looping and imitation enter Hentschel's work. However, these methods serve as characteristic compository elements rather than being in the focus of the pieces. The loop, which often is the starting point of one of Hentschels works, usually plays the role of a constant sound substrate on which harmonic-melodic elements can thrive.

Although Hentschel went through a classical musical education, his compositional techniques are by far not traditional. In fact he does not start with a musical idea, but with searching for suitable sound material. His interest lies in sounds and samples which had been used in a music or film music context before - film audio tracks, soundtracks, music albums, internet, sound libraries etc. He estranges this source material in order to create his own sound - hence the name of his debut album. Hentschel's interest in polyphonic vocal music from the late middle ages - especially ars nova and trecento - stems from his earlier study of musical science in Vienna and Dresden. For this reason two of his pieces (Florence, Slow-Moving) contain music from this epoch in a processed form.

Hentschel does not consider himself as a composer of contemporary music, but as a multimedia artist. He developed his own audiovisual performance, based on the interplay of light, visuals and fog. Moreover he is supported by live drummer Lukas Baumgart and together him and Hentschel create an energy which can be heard as well as felt. His aim is to take the listener on an hour-long journey which brings him to the limits of what he can bear. This is achieved by extended repetitions and long arcs of suspense rather than sheer volume.

Damage was inflicted on our beloved clubs and festivals such as Outline, Arma17, Rabitza. We admire our neighbors who fought for their houses and managed to protect them: Ukrainian Closer, British Fabric and Georgian Bassiani. 

This is a message about a sincere wish to save equality and independence. There’s no place for political games in our cultural life. Only freedom matters.

Since the release of their album Wonderland a couple of years ago, Demdike Stare have been recording material for a new doublepack 'Passion'; an asymmetric re-imagining of UK club styles taking in frenzied drum trax, shortwave jungle, pinging dancehall and clipped, post punk riddims.

During this time they’ve been busy curating their DDS label (inc releases from Shinichi Atobe, Mica Levi, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Equiknoxx, among others) and have been commissioned by both the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) and the surviving members of Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza to mine and rework their archives. Enlisting visual artist Michael England (Autechre, Gescom, Leila), they’ve created a cinematic accompaniment for their collaborative live shows, resulting in the image which adorns this cover - a hybrid/composite portrait exploring/questioning the current use of software in creating hyper reality and the manipulation of the self. The accompanying film Includes documentary footage filmed at a Voguing event in NYC, Blackpool promenade and a Newark, New Jersey roller rink, the end result smudgng the lines between live performance, documentary and sonic cinema.

It’s an idea that’s echoed on Passion, continuing a process Demdike began on their Testpressing series of dismantling lines between analogue and digital realms, between urban realism and fantasy, between experimental, pop and soundsystem cultures. An outlandish configuration of avant-garde and ultimately functional club weapons designed and honed for the weightiest bassbins, it’s also their most direct and fucked up record to date - a raucous, joyful 9-track smash that comes off like a night on a glamorous, neon-lit bender.

DECISIONS is pleased to welcome Hong Kong based producer ASJ to the label with ‘The Illusion Of Separation’. Deploying a blistering and emotive sonic palette, ASJ explores emotional alienation, difference and the social unity that nonetheless binds us — themes that are especially pertinent in the wake of Hong Kong’s recent political upheaval and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The journey begins with ‘Melancholy’, a distortion-streaked meditation on loneliness and isolation. The richly melodic ‘Pendulum’ speaks to the potential for personal growth that stems from an awareness of the cyclical nature of positive and negative mind states. Imagining life as a video game, ’The Game Host’ features playfully twisted vocals and syncopated percussion to evoke agency beyond systemic rules, while ’Chant To Eternity’ offers an ultra tough sonic aid to personal empowerment by drawing on the spiritually cleansing power of chanting. ‘Sublimity’ completes the release. Arcing from musique concrete into ethereal vocals before arriving at a hypnotically elevated plateau, ASJ considers changes of state in the field of chemistry as an analogue to moments of transcendence in our daily lives.

A distilled and ambitious body of work that captures the deeply personal, social and metaphysical realms, ‘The Illusion Of Separation’ is an affecting and timely new entry into ASJ’s catalogue. A ‘Magic Eye’ style stereogram artwork (view at a large size!) further embodies the illusory and cosmic dimensions of the release.
