In the dying light of each day they gathered, the long shadows of the dojo scaffold casting darkness across the solemn faces of the keepers of their art. Each took his turn to tell a part of the story, handed through the generations by their masters. Components of a tale of the overwhelming horror of a past that others preferred to bury in myth. They spoke of a time when the coming of the night spelt death for those in the open blackness, with the pressing undead mass reaching from beyond the grave to extinguish the last embers of life, locked in a desperate struggle to crush the final beacon that sheltered the living. They spoke of he who blocked the crushing sea of extinction in the depths of each night, shielding the fragility of life with the perfection of his brutal and efficient form. The eyes of the living only greeted each new day because of the immortal techniques that had now been passed to them, the new guardians of the beacon, masters of an art now evolved – watching, waiting, perfecting their deadly art… ready for the return of those beyond death.

Following up the immensely successful Karate LP from core Eatbrain artist L 33, comes a deadly second approach to some of the most blinding tracks from the album - reimagined by a collection of apex predators in drum & bass. PROLIX delivers an exhilarating and forward-leaning groove with his take on CLUBLIFE, whilst JOE FORD percussive prowess and intricate and on-point production pushes DROP IT DOWN LOW into dynamic and fresh realms. What had once been but a small village had changed, coating itself in the metallic materials of a new age born of the prosperity that was wrought by its forebears, those who had bound demons in stone so many years ago. The elements of fire and brimstone with which such creatures once threatened the village now lay bound themselves, claimed and wielded as tools that had wrought the stairsteps of progress from the ruins of the city’s troubled past. As progress had waxed however, time waned, and few left still remembered the obelisk which lay hidden at the heart of their city, encased within a monument to victory over the realms’ more worldly foes. Within however, those foes of old had slumbered, keeping sharp the memories of their magical imprisonment. Outside, time had passed, and now arrived back to where it had once been. Thus with the waking of the demons is stone, the time of DIVERGENCE did once again begin.

It began subtly, as the influence of the demons seeped out from the ancient obelisk, transforming the visages of the metallic heroes who were their former jailors into subtly more monstrous forms. From the obelisks dark and rotted core seeped a sinister demonic poison, and ichor that worked its way into dark places both familiar and new. With it came the demons, who slithered out of their forgotten prison and found refuge amidst the smoke and flame now welcomed by those who had forbade them long before. As their power and number grew, their essence enveloped the city, immersing it in a sea of acrid darkness that choked living beings and the light of the sun with equal tenacity. Caught within this abyssal miasma, the minds of the city’s inhabitants corroded as their bodies mutated into horrendous forms, a slow, grueling process that spared those affected not a single horror. As day and night ceased to pass within the haze that strangled the city, the demons emerged from their dark places, assuming their de facto rulership over the city which was now carved in their image. Thus it was again that the world of the living was changed, therein by the darkness from which DIVERGENCE came.

EATBRAIN continues their DIVERGENCE compilation series with DIVERGENCE III, bringing together a monstrous roster including a surprise last ever appearance by the legendary FOREIGN BEGGARS produced by KILLBREAK, and label veterans TELEKINESIS, AGRESSOR BUNX, MIZO, THE CLAMPS, DISPHONIA, IHR, L 33, NAIS, COD3X, LIVEON, KUTLO and novel additions DISASZT, SHADOW SECT, SCREAMARTS, CHASER. Concocting a vile sonic solution from the component tracks within, EATBRAIN sends their loyal horde onwards under the banner of DIVERGENCE, once again uniting artists new and old in their devastating audio assault.

Based out of Linz, north Austria, Martin Schober is a singular protagonist at the forefront of this beguiling game we call drum & bass. He likes hip-hop, skateboarding, schnitzel, Leibniz biscuits and long walks in the sunset, but he’s most respected for how he traipses across electronic music’s wildest terrains with total boundary abandonment… And is regarded as a leading influential new-gen figure in the genre. 

From his agenda-setting halftime twist of ‘Sunday Crunk’ to his rolling, emotional collabo cameo on Camo & Krooked’s acclaimed album ‘Mosaik’. From his entrance into the Fabriclive mix hall of fame with a mix album comprising entirely of his own productions (‘Fabriclive 95’) to his Drum&BassArena Award-winning debut album ‘Emulation’, Mefjus’s signature sound has been felt across the furthest expanses of the genre since he emerged in the early 2010s. 

Now working closely with Vision - the label run by kindred studio spirits Noisia - Mefjus continues to fine-tune his musical syntax, technical dexterity, eye for detail and deft groove sensibilities. The latest chapter to savour this on-going flux of development is his second album ‘Manifest’.

Released April 2018, ‘Manifest’ is the sound of Mefjus 2.0. After several years in the studio wilderness, exploring the dark science of song structure, musicality and textural contrasts, ‘Manifest’ captures a new mindset for Mefjus. Raw, energetic, playful and subversive, ‘Manifest’ is the most personal, diverse and daring body of work to date. Not so much as reminder of why he occupies such a unique position in drum & bass but a straight-up statement of intent.
