She watched with endless eyes, the deep, black wells of the infinite void staring back at her. Undulating in subtle and almost imperceptible fluid motion under her gaze in pure smooth darkness, freckled with imperfections that morphed into intricately delicious fractal forms. Moments passed, stacked in the lattice of forever… she could have counted them at first, but the spiral form of her conscious mind was lost to the reflection, her mind smeared across the boundaries of time evenly in a permanent state of heightened alertness. The eye of the mirror held her, so simple in its intricate construction, yet nothing like it existed elsewhere in the world. Its immaculate surface was flawless, holding the power to reflect an unimaginable, infinite scale of perfection, rendering even the most imperfect of things pure by its touch. She had dwelled in front of it for countless days, at first clothed as she lost herself in her own eyes and under the gaze of the twisted, malevolent entities that adorned its edges, but the desire to reveal herself was beyond compelling. It saw her in a way that she had never seen herself. She had stripped away the layers of fabric, fighting back the claws of madness as she had to tear away her eyes to remove the garments, diving deeply back into the dark and utterly beautiful voids of those eyes that started back at her as she locked its gaze once more. She sat upright, opening her consciousness further, fully revealing her mind and body to its unblinking eye, reaching out with the deepest part of herself in connection. It reached back… the chill of the jolt ran through her from the center of her forehead down through her spine, spreading across her skin with a deep malevolence. Before her the vision that gazed back changed sharply, as the image of her double twisted vile into disfigured beauty. Her mind erupted across itself, as the very mirror encouraged it… spilling with unimaginable flow from within and painting a deep delusion on the collage of her body and soul. She was AWAKE.

The anomaly seemed at first innocuous enough. Following the first reporting of its existence, a team of scientists had been dispatched for its study. With their instruments they recorded a great deal of data, recovering soil samples, barometric readings, & even attempting to peer into its murky depths. The official report labeled it a sinkhole like any other, and the team departed without so much as a second thought. The area was cordoned off and signs were placed warning of the sinkhole, but no more was done to ward those nearby from it. Naturally with time, rumor spread and the curiosity of the citizenry was piqued as a few private citizens snuck past the barricades to inspect the sinkhole for themselves. Upon their arrival, their eyes met with a sight far different from what the official report had read.

A blackened corruption spread from the sinkhole, its inky tint smothering the verdant field that had lain in its place. Not a single plant grew, and the few trees had been twisted into forms which seemed to mock life itself. Within the minds of those present, a eerie sound reached out. Its beauty captivated them, the beguiling melody transforming the wasted landscape into an eden before their very eyes. Its verdant nature returned, blossoming before them and casting its petals upon zephyrs that brushed the skin of those watching with their warm embrace. At the center of this lush landscape lay a crystal pool, clear as glass and sky blue. Those watching fell to their knees, awestruck by the beauty of what lay before them. They found themselves wrapt in dance, spiraling throughout the meadow and circling towards the pool at its center. They spun faster and faster, orbiting closer to the pool with each moment, its cool waters calling to them. Crying out with pleasure, one closest leapt into the pool, soaring momentarily above its surface before breaking through. The illusion faded around him, the blackened wasteland searing back into his eyes. His cry turned to fear as he realized he was still falling, deep within the sinkhole in the wasteland’s center. As it echoed around the depths in which he fell, while the others above continued their dance obliviously, as they followed in his footsteps, moving ever closer to the pool as they danced to the CALL OF THE VOID. 

KOLT returns to EATBRAIN following his 2018 release of the OCTOPUS EP on the label with his latest four track EP entitled CALL OF THE VOID. INTO THE VOID opens the EP with its sharp edged synths, which slice their way to the fore following their introduction by ascendant arpeggios. PATCHWORK’s similar arpeggio’s take on a more ominous tone, providing a cinematic atmosphere soon overtaken by the rapid oscillations of a mobile metallic bassline. SPACE GHETTO is narrated by a conspiratorial vocal sample that lends a sinister atmosphere to its stomping halftime rhythm. TIMELESS features the addition of the textures of DUB ELEMENTS alongside KOLT, resulting in a furious sonic assault driven by frantic high pitched stabs and a roaring bassline. With CALL OF THE VOID, KOLT once more calls out to all who hear his music with his irresistible sound.

Within the labyrinthine concrete tunnels that sprawled out beneath the city pattered the soft footfalls of an expert infiltrator who moved with grace in contrast to their brutalist construction. Muffled by advanced technology, her movements would have been imperceptible anywhere else save for the desolate emptiness of this place. Another might be driven mad by the path she now walked as it circled and turned with no end in sight, but she had come determined. Hidden within this labyrinth was a vault of minosian value, containing a vast wealth of technical secrets her employer had paid much to acquire. Taking a moment to orient herself, she pondered what might truly be of value enough to be hidden within such a massive complex. Then she chuckled, remembering that the rich always wanted the same thing. “LASERS & STUFF”, she scoffed “All they ever care about is the lasers.

After sometime more spent within the byzantine tunnel complex, a new sight availed itself to the infiltrator. One tunnel ran straight forwards, terminating at a massive set of double titanium doors. Interspersed between her and that threshold lay a number of grids of light, burning blue-hot within the otherwise dimmed atmosphere of the tunnels. Within her mind sprung a reverie of another time, thoughts of the “spies” of old who had used all sorts of tricks to reveal hidden laser grids protecting their prize. Once more a grin came to her face. “That was before the lasers could kill” she thought as she altered her protective suit, disabling its mufflers and activating its muscular augmentation functionality. Returning her mind’s gaze to the matter at hand, she crouched low in preparation for the coup de grace. With little more than a twitch, she catapulted forth from her position, cracking the concrete beneath her under the force of her launch. With impossible speed she shot through the laser grids which had lain before her, the bite of their photons barely scratching the surface of her suit as they found but a miniscule moment’s purchase upon its surface. Powered by the momentum of her leap, the infiltrator’s fist connected with the center of the titanium doors, blowing them off their hinges with pure kinetic energy. Before her lay a small box upon a single pedestal, what seemed a token reward for her efforts. With nary a thought for its contents she attached it to her suit before once more catapulting towards the exit. The rich could depend on their LASERS & STUFF all they wanted, she thought. People like her would always find a way to beat them.

A-CRAY returns to the EATBRAIN label with the release of his 3 track LASERS & STUFF EP in an electric continuation of his previous audio assaults through the label. The titular LASERS & STUFF rings with the pulsar bursts of a bright snare that emanate above a deviously warped lead and strutting beat. PROXY’s overcharged bassline draws on an endless source of cyclical energy as it rises alongside a racing melody in an energetic fusion, whilst WASTED FUNK’s chromatic lead and frenzied percussion close the EP as they deliver a devastatingly weighty halftime audio sequence driven by its debauched bassline rhythm. With LASERS & STUFF, A-CRAY marks his first full solo EP on the EATBRAIN label charged with his unique sonic energy.

By this release, we've already been treated to a glimpse of what to expect from the “20 Years of Technique” album with Glitch City's explosive remix of Drumsound & Bassline Smith's “Skumbag”. Now, DC Breaks takes the reins on a reworking of another Technique classic, Tantrum Desire's “Airhead”.

A calm-before-the-storm arpeggio dances across the intro, but the first touch of savagery isn't far behind. A militant half-time beat breaks down into an epic sequence of risers, stabs and building percussion that stamps DC Breaks' authority on the track and lets us know they've brought something brand new to the table.

The explosive drop confirms that Tantrum Desire's original creation has been gene-spliced and mutated into a whole new monster. The bubbling funk has been transformed into a relentless assault of twisted basses and stomping drums, as the DC Breaks guys take us one step deeper into neuro-fuelled mania.

Now a fixture of the DnB calendar, the Technique Summer album has been lighting up the scene with its combination of freshly-discovered talent and certified vets since its 2016 debut. In 2018, one of the biggest tunes from the LP was Smooth's “All Over the World”, which got heavy rotation on Radio 1 and 1Xtra, as well as in raves everywhere. So, it makes sense that our first taste of Technique Summer 2019 comes, once again, from man like Smooth.

“Forever” opens with a pure dose of euphoria. Loose, live-sounding drums, match with uplifting keys and pitch-shifted vocals to combine elements of the old skool with flavours of anthemic dancefloor liquid.

As the tune builds and drops, Smooth flexes his junglist's instinct for break programming, with layers of percussion melding and morphing over warm, enveloping bass tones. Simultaneously high-impact and melodically mellow, this is the definition of summertime drum 'n' bass.

But that's not all. You're going to want to let this one run. There's a beautifully constructed breakdown made of little flecks of vocal and chords that subtly shimmer and build back towards the energy-release of the second drop. Vibes guaranteed.

So, looks like Smooth's done it again. He's delivered another Technique Summer classic but, let's not forget, this is just the first sampler from the album project. Every year there are surprises, new artists to discover, and new music from old favourites. The standard has been set, and now we can't wait to check what the full album has to offer.

Based out of Linz, north Austria, Martin Schober is a singular protagonist at the forefront of this beguiling game we call drum & bass. He likes hip-hop, skateboarding, schnitzel, Leibniz biscuits and long walks in the sunset, but he’s most respected for how he traipses across electronic music’s wildest terrains with total boundary abandonment… And is regarded as a leading influential new-gen figure in the genre. 

From his agenda-setting halftime twist of ‘Sunday Crunk’ to his rolling, emotional collabo cameo on Camo & Krooked’s acclaimed album ‘Mosaik’. From his entrance into the Fabriclive mix hall of fame with a mix album comprising entirely of his own productions (‘Fabriclive 95’) to his Drum&BassArena Award-winning debut album ‘Emulation’, Mefjus’s signature sound has been felt across the furthest expanses of the genre since he emerged in the early 2010s. 

Now working closely with Vision - the label run by kindred studio spirits Noisia - Mefjus continues to fine-tune his musical syntax, technical dexterity, eye for detail and deft groove sensibilities. The latest chapter to savour this on-going flux of development is his second album ‘Manifest’.

Released April 2018, ‘Manifest’ is the sound of Mefjus 2.0. After several years in the studio wilderness, exploring the dark science of song structure, musicality and textural contrasts, ‘Manifest’ captures a new mindset for Mefjus. Raw, energetic, playful and subversive, ‘Manifest’ is the most personal, diverse and daring body of work to date. Not so much as reminder of why he occupies such a unique position in drum & bass but a straight-up statement of intent.
