The Roaring Twenties.  The heyday of jazz music and flapper girls.  In Chicago, Wrigley Field was a mere decade old. The red and purple Chicago Transit Authority lines that took fans to and from Cubs games—and across the city from Wilmette to 95th Street—was brand new.  

Today, these same tracks are the busiest lines in the U.S. outside of New York City.  36 percent of CTA passengers, nearly a quarter of a million people, ride the red and purple lines daily.  

And this number is only growing.  

To address this problem, city officials and the U.S. Department of Transportation announced plans to expand and improve the lines. The project will be the largest in CTA history.
