For this month’s Tsubaki FM, we invite London/Birmingham-based vinyl collector and DJ, Seb Rolley !

We first met him at the "Beauty and The Beat" party in London, and since then, we have been sharing epic rides together! (Including the van rides...:)) This time, he blessed us with some of his groovy and psychedelic records he has collected from all over the world (literally, all over the world!).

He starts off with a chill world music selection, including msuic from Japan in the first half. Then progressing to some Brazilian records, building up the vibes.

Bio:
Omar Ahmad is a Palestinian American composer, producer, and sound artist. A self-taught multi-instrumentalist he enjoys bending the “rules” of genre, often using child-like and unconventional techniques to yield the raw emotion present in his work. His compositions are inspired by the ever-changing balance between distinct feelings and oppositional pairs in the world: empathy/disconnection, loss/discovery, longing/isolation. As a third culture musician Ahmad rarely finds himself fully belonging to a singular sound or ideology.

Alongside Alicia Coleman (Sweet Kicks) Ahmad recently co-founded Ūmboma, a recurring global dance event emphasizing African, Arab and Latin American contemporary rhythms. A combination of Arabic, Swahili and Spanish words, Ūmboma signifies a Congregation of Freedom & Dance. He also co-runs the ambient experimental show series Mesmarize, hosted by Mesma Records. Ahmad is also a regular contributing DJ at Laylit, the largest and fastest-growing contemporary Middle Eastern and North African music community in New York. 

A stalwart member of the underground Brooklyn electronic scene for many years, Ahmad has performed at esteemed venues Elsewhere, National Sawdust, Jupiter Disco, Littlefield, Bowery Electric, TBA Brooklyn, and Knitting Factory.

Mix description:
Inspired by contemporary club music spanning from the four corners of the globe and beyond, this mix is an homage to the variety of life. A testament to downtempo music that can bring the heat, uptempo music that can inspire euphoria as much as movement, and everything in between, this blend of songs was a challenge to myself to find the satisfying and energizing throughline that connects so many disparate genres. With an emphasis on syncopated rhythms, there is a lot for those looking to sit and listen thoroughly, while still fully translatable and in the spirit of a usual peak hour club mix for me.

Art piece: Mechan 9 

Mechan 9 is the newest creation from Tyler FuQua Creations.  It is a giant fallen metal robot that is half-buried in the ground.  Over thirty five feet in diameter and six feet tall at his heart chamber, Mechan 9 is shrouded in mystery!  Decode the strange text on his body to reveal the secrets of not only his past, but of the universe as well.  Mechan 9 was built by an amazing crew and with the help of a Burning Man art grant in 2016 where it made its debut.
