Take a look at Brisbane-based Average Art Club’s skate deck full of pedals, and you’ve immediately got a pretty good idea of what they’re all about.

Originally formed in 2013, the quartet has being playing as Average Art Club since 2015, and are responsible for the creation of their own merchandise in the form of paint spattered pins, stickers, and t-shirts. Hannah Manic, local artist and producer of the band’s signature slippery, fuzzy bass lines, explains that the name choice is about more than a modest outlook on their own work:

“It’s inspired by Beautiful Losers, a documentary about LA street artists/musicians/skaters in the 90s. I recognised ourselves in their DIY punk aesthetic, disdain for the status quo, art for art’s sake methodology, and not taking your shit too seriously.”

Lyricist and guitarist, Lisa Murr, creates sounds awash with reverb and delay that often culminate in moments of pure distortion, while Thomas Kinsella’s synthesisers add layers of ambient, intergalactic cosmic symphonies. At times, listeners will find that this combination catapults them into space, their only tether to Earth being Hannah Manic’s slick bass and the tight, technical grooves of drummer Kurt Abel’s kit.

The band’s first gig after a six-month hiatus took place at Brisbane’s beloved Barbara, where their energy pulled a crowd that saw many jostling for space in the doorway. Soon after, Average Art Club took to the stage in their hometown of Toowoomba for Kontraband Studio’s annual celebration of DIY skate culture, Fastplant. There, the group’s ambient, layered harmonies were once again well received. Since then, they have played to heaving crowds at the likes of Mountain Goat Valley Festival and Yonder Festival, with more exciting announcements to come before the year is out.

Having performed with the likes of WAFIA, Ecca Vandal, WAAX, Cub Sport, Sasqwatch, The Cairos, The Griswolds, The John Steel Singers, and The Steele Syndicate, Average Art Club show no sign of slowing down.
