As I build my annual top 25, I generally exclude covers, remixes, foreign language songs, and songs that appeal only to me. After all, the top 25 represent the Holt house sound. Emma Peter’s cover of Trop Beau, remixed by Crisologo is a perfect illustration of this conundrum. This is my favorite song of the year, but it is a remix, a cover, and sung in French. Kind of breaks the Top 25 rules. So I made this list of many of my favorite songs from the year. You’ll find some alternative dance, hip hop, house, German dance punk, and electronica. Strap on your headphones or power up your nice speakers and find some new ear worms.

Drumpoet Community are celebrating a triumphant fifteen years of music with the release of a new compilation of tracks in instalments. What better way than to kick things off than with two powerhouses of the German electronic music scene and legends in their own right?

Roman Flügel & Frank Wiedemann have collaborated to produce a track of supreme quality which is destined to soar and rise eagerly through clubs this summer. You know it.

Baby It's Too Late

Harambee means "let's all pull together" in Swahili. Through several trips to Kenya, this homage to the country of Kenya was born.The track is a clever disco composition with funky brass and guitar, groovy rhodes and catchy vocals. Definitely a summer anthem that carries you away.
La Gozadera is inspired by Cuban carnival rhythms. For the production, the two Cubans Jose Braide (piano/synth), Alcides Toirac and the Spaniard Alberto Garcia (percussion) came together. Driving uptempo latin with its own twist makes this song unique.
The track “When we used to dance” is afro disco boogie at it's finest, beaming you back to the 80's. Voilaaa built around Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart from Lyon gives the original track Harambee a deeper feel. Nice "highlife" brass and guitars reminiscent of Ghana, give the song its own vibe.

Nottingham psych-pop specialists Midnight Rodeo share brand new effort ‘The Big Melt’.

Bursting onto the scene earlier this year with tantalising debut cuts ‘Now You’re Gone’ and ‘Shootout Sunday’, the group’s swaggering homage to 60’s lo-fi garage rock has already drawn influences from the likes of Allah-las, Juniore, La Luz and Pink Floyd, with enigmatic frontwoman Maddy Chamberlain’s alluring vocals nobly supported by a densely layered, atmospheric sound that combines slick psychedelia with Morricone-esque soundscapes.

Detailing their release, the six-piece revealed: “We were once a bit out of sorts walking through town and accidentally joined a Brazilian drum parade. I'm sure it was entirely coincidental timing, but we felt like that dog who thinks the parade is for them. I feel like we tried to recreate that feeling of finding yourself lost in an awakening world within a mundane day, and brought in Sam’s (keys, synths) Dad & brother to help with all the additional percussion to give it a Latin feel. It’s a big old good time party tune”.

With significant praise already from the likes of So Young Magazine, Clash, The Independent, Rough Trade and Under The Radar, and live slots ticked off alongside acts including The Bug Club and FEET, Midnight Rodeo will be heading out on their own debut headline UK tour this November to coincide with their single release.

The cult of Multi Culti expands it’s horizons to include Nicola Cruz, backed by remixes from Xanga and L_cio.

Nicola Cruz’s music beautifully invokes the landscapes and rituals of his homeland, Ecuador, a country that contains both the majestic Andes mountains and the mighty Amazon jungle.  His sound is an amalgamation of folkloric traditions and ancestral mythologies, crafted with fine detail and slick production techniques.

In 2012 Nicola collaborated with Nicolas Jaar on Clown & Sunset, and has since worked towards his debut album on ZZK Records.
Between past and present, traditional and modern, Nicola fits into a growing scene of South American artists exploring local indigenous and Afro-cosmologies, among fellow artists and ZZK label-mates like Chancha Via Circuito.

For his debut on Multi Culti, Nicola has created Mantis, and it is arguably his most accomplished club record to date, a 105bpm tribal chugger that flexes shamanic authority over hearts and minds. Invocacion goes even deeper into the new, new age, presenting traditional instrumentation and mysticism in a modern framework. Australia’s Xanga joins in with a super lively, rhythmic remix that is as joyful as it is deep. Finally, Brazil’s L_cio presents a version that strips things down for club play, upping the tempo while keeping the characteristic flavour of the flute.

May 5th marks the release of Village Cuts’ new single ‘Banzutu’ - one of their most highly anticipated dubs. Banzutu is a collaboration with Congolese musician Mulele Matondo Afrika (Kongo Dia Ntotila, Devils of Moko) linking up to create an uplifting and powerful addition to your summer soundtrack.

Mulele commands the march with his distinctive vocal chants and stomping bass guitar, accompanied by a wall of interweaving seben guitar patterns, building towards an explosion of pumping sub bass to get the club and your body bouncing. Tried and tested on the dancefloor, this unique collaboration brings joy and energy wherever it is played. 

Their friendship was formed in East London’s live music scene where Mulele can often be seen performing and educating people with his innovative brand of Congolese music. After Kongo Dia Ntotila headlined a Village Cuts event back in 2019, they decided to join forces in building a track that combines both Mulele’s musical brilliance with Village Cuts’ club sonics. 

Sung in Lingala the track will make you ‘sunda na lofenio’ (move your hips) and ‘ningisa’ (shake) all night long!
