Melanie Higgins AKA MEJMI is a Dj hailing from Galway but is currently Cork based. Melanie has been making strong moves in the industry and is not planning on stopping now. Melanie recently created a few viral videos which landed her a spot on RTE as she mixed Irish music with techno allowing her to cross musical boundaries and discover new sounds. She has recently started producing her own tracks which have a very cool vibe as she uses her own voice to create the rhythms and loops, . Melanie's style of mixing is strong and hypnotic and leaves you wanting more from her energy filled sets

The Local Selection returns for another weekly mix, this time coming from Galway and Cork based DJ and producer, MEJMI, who contributes a blistering hour of techno, as our 155th mix to our ever growing series. 

Melanie aka MEJMI (A Galway/Cork based DJ) took up Djing in the summer of 2019 as a hobby, but soon after spiralled into something unique and interesting for her, gaining interested listeners and followers on her journey.

You may have already come across MEJMI last summer, with her viral videos combining her love for traditional Irish music and dance music, as she plays the violin while Djing, which helped showcase her musicality and ability to mix styles and genres. Since then she has been producing her own music and began playing in clubs and at festivals in Ireland.

MEJMI was introduced into the music industry from a very early age,  coming from a musical family, with her father a drummer and herself playing three musical instruments. MEJMI studied four years in the Cork School of Music, perfecting her performance on the cello, piano and violin. These years helped expose her to different kinds of music, thus giving her a great understanding of rhythm, energy and flow which you can hear in her sets. 

MEJMI has been producing for the last year and a half mixing rhythmic vocals and creating an industrial feel in her tracks. Her latest release ‘Pineapple Pain’ showcases her love for a driving bass and hypnotic lines.

You will be able to catch MEJMI in action in festivals and clubs in Cork/Mayo/Belfast and Galway in the upcoming months, but for now, make Melanie's mix your Wednesday afternoon soundtrack.

Our first premiere of the week comes from Galway based DJ & producer MEJMI. The budding producer has recently released a 3 track EP which is focussed on the textured side of minimal techno, as MEJMI finds solace in off kilter rhythms, funky sequences and alien soundscapes.

Galway based MEJMI is originally trained in classical music, but she has been making a name for herself recently as she’s moved her musical prowess into a the darker territories of minimalistic techno. Her distinct 90’s inspired sound draws influence from acid to rave and is focussed on paying respect to the routes on dance music culture.

MEJMI has garnered a solid reputation for rocking dancefloors in recent times. The young DJ has recently found herself playing on the Polish circuit on both a club and festival level. She has headlined at the slutty virgin festival and K-fest in Kerry and made appearances country wide playing for Cheek Eire, Blue Print Festival, Kriptik , 3ip.ka, Prospekt, Dv8, as well as more gigs forthcoming.

MEJMI’s three track contribution to Faoi Thalamh Records is steeped in deep sea excursions, as MEJMI manages to capture aquarian soundscapes through polyrhythmic sequences and off-kilter rhythms. ‘Skrzyczne’ poses at the most dance-floor friendly track out of the lot, as hypnotising synths glide around the syncopated grooves. Jarring synth lines seem to ripple and melt throughout the track, as dynamic 900 grooves stir intensity, agitated metallic hits leave listeners feeling somewhat on edge, and most certainly unhinged. This is a big tip for fans of Stanislav Tolckachev, Lewis Fautzi & more.

Today’s premiere is courtesy of Galway-Cork-based DJ and producer, MEJMI. 
MEJMI provides us with a track entitled ‘Warsaw Angels’ that is unlike her previous techno releases showcasing her diverse musical pallet. Spanning territory that sounds ethereal, and atmospheric, yet simultaneously introspective. Truly stellar stuff.

MEJMI is originally trained in classical music but has been making a name for herself recently as she’s moved her musical prowess into darker territories of minimalistic techno. Her distinct 90’s inspired sound draws influence from acid to rave and is focussed on paying respect to the routes of dance music culture. Boasting previous releases on harmless.recs and SPEED, MEJMI has noticeably tapped into inspirations that derive from historical eras of dance music.

Touching on MEJMI’s DJ capabilities, the young artist has built a solid reputation for rocking dance floors in recent times. She has found herself playing on the Polish circuit on both a club and festival level, headlining ‘The Slutty Virgin Festival’ and ‘K-fest’ in Kerry as well as appearances nation-wide playing for Cheek Eire, Blue Print Festival, Kriptik, 3ip.ka, Prospekt, and DV8 too, with more shows in the pipeline, no doubt!

MEJMI’s track ‘Warsaw Angels’ is a terrific track that flexes the producers’ muscles as she takes a more unconventional approach when compared to the rest of her discography. Nearing a sound that is best described as ethereal, and atmospheric, yet simultaneously introspective which makes for a stellar release.

MEJMI is an artist on the up, and for good reason. Balancing several projects, from
running her event series Club Economy, co-curating the online radio show Síbín,
producing potent techno and DJing across Ireland, the Galway-born, Cork-based talent is
one of the most dedicated, creative and innovative names in the scene.

MEJMI's sound stems from the hypnotic, shadowy and groovy corners of techno, blending
spectral atmospheres with old-skool flavours. A knowledgeable selector using vinyl and digital
formats, she respects the genre's roots and pays homage to the eras that have shaped dance
music culture as we know it today.
A trained multi-instrumentalist in piano, violin and cello, MEJMI later discovered techno via
late-night broadcasts on Radió Na Gaeltacht. During the long days of lockdown, MEJMI
explored the genre further and taught herself how to mix, drawing influence from the vibrant
nightlife of Valencia, Spain, where she previously spent time on Erasmus. With

DJ bookings for festivals, parties and clubs, including Electric Picnic, Fuinneamh, Dublin
Modular, Blueprint Belfast, K-fest, The Slutty Virgin Festival, Plant Bass'd, The Cellar, Dali, and
Kriptik, alongside Rene Wise, Cailín, Not a Headliner, Dylan Fogerty, Jamie Behan, Doug Cooney, Conceptual & Offtrack, have featured in her diary. International gigs, counting Warsaw
and Lublin, have also cropped up in her calendar.

Additionally, MEJMI is the founder of the event series Club Economy. Rhythm, harmony,
balance, contrast, and expression form the foundation of Club Economy, with gender inclusivity
a key element across all lineups. The party is for individuals from all walks of life who enjoy a
combination of visual arts and top-quality techno. While An Spailpin Fánach has hosted
previous Club Economy nights, MEJMI aims to bring the event to unsuspecting spaces not
usually aligned with dance music. Next up, Club Economy will make its debut in Dublin in
December, rounding out 2023 on a strong note.
As co-founder of Síbín on London's Voices Radio, MEJMI connects and showcases artists from
disparate musical backgrounds, providing a platform to express themselves, feel inspired and
create a sense of community across the board.
Garnering support from FourFour, Techno People of Cork and Cork Arts Council, the latter of
whom tipped her as 'one to watch', MEJMI's outstanding abilities continue to shine, forming an
unparalleled path of her own.
