Born and raised in the town of Dunnville, southern Ontario, Janine "J9" Carter has been a constant figure in Toronto's thriving music scene. This art and music enthusiast took the leap from the small-town life and ventured into Toronto's bustling energy right after high school. While J9 initially opted for a career in visual arts, their innate passion for music never waned, only growing stronger after building a lasting friendship with Scott Gray, a prominent figure in bands like World Next Door and Tripping Hazard.

As a seasoned Royal Conservatory musician, J9 made meaningful contributions to the Toronto art rock scene with their involvement in local bands The Good Ideas and Tripping Hazard. Eventually, their creative journey took a turn towards the electronic genre, allowing J9 to craft a unique sonic identity that was a distinctively alternative spin on contemporary electronic pop. This sound was notably influenced by '90s trip-hop and experimental pop, drawing inspiration from the likes of Cibo Matto, Bjork, and Mazzy Star.

Immersed from a young age in the eclectic worlds of Bjork, Beethoven, and The Beatles, J9's music naturally exudes an offbeat, audacious, and romantic quality - a vibe that existed even before their venture into electronic sounds.  Elements of J9's non-binary Metis Canadian identity occasionally surface through their androgynous vocal tones and distinctive percussion choices.  In the realm of production, Ableton Live and Push are J9's canvas and brush of choice.  Analog synth contributes significantly to their work, playing a vital role in providing many of the unique textural nuances in their tracks.

With a firm belief in the healing power of art, J9 transformed personal struggles into catalysts for transformation, most notably reflected in their debut album, Destructo. This theme continued in their subsequent album, Colt 45, released as a sequence of singles. Both albums, akin to cathartic breakup anthologies, draw inspiration from the tribulations of love, the swings between intoxication and sobriety, and the turmoil of global chaos.
