I was watching videos of the Pharoah Sanders concert a few days after the end of the recent We Out Here festival. He was evidently frail and unwell, perhaps even uncomfortable after not setting foot on stage for three years.  

However, even through a phone screen, you couldn't help but get goosebumps once he blew into the saxophone. His charizma, aura, and sheer emotion, as always, shining through. Sadly it was to be his last. The torchbearer of Coltrane's legacy and his one true heir, passed away just a few weeks later. 
  
Born Farrell Sanders in Little Rock, Arkansas, Pharoah picked up the saxophone in his teenage years. He briefly moved to the West Coast to study art, before going to New York to take part in an exciting new jazz scene led by his idol, and later mentor, John Coltrane. Alongside Eric Dolphy, Archie Shepp, and Albert Ayler, he would become one of the most sought-after saxophonists in what was dubbed - avant-garde jazz. Pharoah Sanders joined Coltrane in 1965 and spent the next two years as his protege. After Trane's passing, he continued to take his music to new dimensions, furthering his journey into African and Eastern philosophies and eventually, becoming the face and driving force of what is now known as - spiritual jazz. 

From Alice Coltrane to Floating Points, Pharoah would collaborate with numerous musicians over the decades. However, for this tribute, I decided to focus on strictly his solo output and showcase the mastery of the albums he recorded for Impulse!, Strata East, and Theresa from the late sixties to the early eighties.

Idle Cellars is back with another chiller killer for your Autumn revelry! This time around we’ve got another stellar mix from West Coast pioneer, Bay Area Rave legend & Cali breakbeat progenitor DJ SPUN! Responsible for breaking breaks in SF in the early 90s, punk rock bandleader in the early 80s, disco mastermind in the early 00’s - the man has been there, done that, whether via his label Rong Music, curating events at PS1 in NYC with the cream of club culture, humbly embodying some of the greatest DJ skills in the world, let alone the US (and let alone California!). 

His resume is far too long to list here, but he’s given us this fantastic mix for horizontal grooving that he’s titled “Idle Dub…Idle Chug”. Spun commented: “For fall and winter I usually switch to red wine…So this mix marked the start of the season and is a testament to the effect of a bottle of red!” Say no more squire! 

As usual, we’re in love with this journey through music, a gentle nudge from wonderful ambience through some late-night dubby funk on a slo-mo tip, keeping things musical and in outerspace!

This is going to be a long one because there is a lot that's been happening in space, and I've got a lot of great music and Astro wisdom to share. In this edition, we take a walk on the Gemini New Moon and consider how Mercury's ingress into the twins might open up some insight and new lines of communication. We also look back over Saturn's ingress into the cardinal fire sign of Aries to gain some insight into how that vibe shift might affect us. We also dive into the heart of the Sun with Mercury as they come into their cazimi to gain a little clarity later in the week. And we round out this week's show with Venus's conjunction to Chiron in Aries, which can bring up some relational wounds as well the opportunity to heal some of those pain points through connection and joy. To celebrate the launch of the Pasteelo x Thomas Pålsson collaboration, @jabarligla has dug deep into the crates to put together a mixtape that pays homage to the Copenhagen jazz scene in the 60s - especially a tribute to three Copenhagen jazz cats: Allan Botschinsky, Bjarne Rostvold and NHØP.

"Allan Botschinsky, Bjarne Rostvold and NHØP - all three essential cornerstones of the Danish jazz heritage (among other legends of course). They played together as a trio, but also in many other different constellations and had their own solo careers - extremely gifted jazz cats. So gifted that the whole world opened its eyes to what was happening on the Copenhagen jazz scene. It became a melting pot in the 60s, to which many of the great jazz legends from the US and beyond contributed... the rest is history.

The premise of this mix is ​​that at least one of the three jazz cats is credited on every track - which means that many other jazz musicians are also represented in the mix.. People like Jørn Elniff, Bent Axen, Sahib Shihab, Alex Riel, Ole Kock Hansen, Jørn Grauengaard, Hugo Rasmussen to name just a few.

Allan Botschinsky, Bjarne Rostvold and NHØP's careers transformed over the years from the earlier post bebop years to hard bop up through the early 60s, on to a more soul/funk and mainstream jazz sound in the late 60s and 70s, even children's music in between and further into the 80s fusion..

In this mix I have chosen to focus exclusively on the early years, when they primarily played hard bop, but there will also be a few detours and an ending in a psychedelic bathtub.. enjoy!" - Jabar.
