Ben Klock - Ostgut Ton - Berghain

The second track for Jamuary (January 2nd 2026). Spent way too much time figuring out the wiring with the Roland Jupiter 8 (JP08) and JX3P. Also spent too much time getting the Octave Cat in "harmony" with the Yamaha  (and playing with the Wasp, which I didn't use in the end). A Donner D1 and Behringer RD9 (TR-909) were used for the drums, along with effects, both rack mount and pedals. Oh, and a Yamaha FB-01 through a TC electronics rack effect unit.

Taking a cue from the title, the sabotage happens at 2:07 where the minor chord house track gets derailed into something a bit more dark and techno, overdrive and distortion take over. The echo / pitch shifting settings on the melody is based on the Fibonacci sequence (1, 2, 3, 5, 8) midway through the song, and at 2:07 goes through a guitar stack with vibrato.

Overall, this was way too much prep work between programming the sequence in the synth, getting the arpeggiator right, programming the drums etc. Then get this on the multi track recorder, and no less than 3 takes at final mixdown (by hand, on the mixer). My workflow is not really designed for this kind of strict mechanical 4 bars type of music. 

Tomorrow, I'll probably just jam along my good old Univox SR95...

Function Boiler Room Berlin DJ Set

For the last 25 years, Luke Slater has been a master in sound design. Throughout his career he’s operated under several different guises, with an extensive back catalogue that’s widely regarded as one of techno’s greatest. 

He started out in the early 90s releasing seminal works on labels like Peacefrog, and in 2006 he started putting out music via his own label Mote Evolver, yet his output hasn’t slowed down since then: the best example of this is probably last year’s killer 'Arc Angel' LP he released as Planetary Assault Systems via Ostgut Ton.

Slater is equally lauded as a DJ. Through our history he’s become something of a Farringdon staple, and his clinical precision has helped make his Room Two sets highly anticipated among the techno contingent of our family.

He reminded us why he’s become so integral to our space at his last appearance with us. Following on from Terry Francis and Black Asteroid’s bewildering live show, Slater stepped up to close out the room with a dramatic and transcendent 3-hour closing.

As we invite him to return to his adopted Room Two home this coming Saturday, we uncovered the recording from last year in anticipation.
