Review:
Frankfurt’s favourite Roman Flügel returns to Phonica Records with the ‘Black Acid EP’, a four tracker of Flügel’s signature black magic.

Roman needs no real introduction. Let’s just say this prolific producer has a hugely varied discography stretching back to the early 90s, putting his hand to Techno, House, Acid, Electro, Ambient, Bass music... you name it, he’s done it. It goes without saying that Phonica are extremely proud to present a brand new release from one of electronic music’s truest talents!

The ‘Black Acid EP’ began life way back in 2013 as Phonica sourced material for their ‘Ten Years Of Phonica’ compilation. Roman’s hypnotic, restrained percussion jam ‘Giant Talking Vegetable’ was one of the understated highlights of the release. A few years and countless email discussions later, London’s leading independent record shop happily unveil a 12” with four new tracks of pure Flügel black magic.

The ominous ‘Too Hot To Sleep’ begins proceedings and holds the listener in suspense, never quite giving way before the mood deepens even further with ‘Troubled Mind’, its tense melodies teasing then finally succumbing to long-awaited release midway through.

On the flip, title track ‘Black Acid’ continues the record’s dark ritual, an off-kilter drum workout over a sea of uneasy pads with a needle sharp synth line eventually piercing through the murk. Finally, the clouds begin to lift for the beautiful and otherworldly chords of ‘Work & TV’. Light at the end of the tunnel after all...

The sixth EP of Infinite Depth is produced by the Spanish artist Asonante. It has been a long wait till a new release of this characteristic producer, but it’s finally here. Asonante managed to create two atmospheric and dark, but still melodic tracks: ‘Appearances’ and ‘The Silfos’. The first one got a more melodic touch by Oliver Winters and the second one got into the techno hands of Symmetric & Future of Matter. This all forms a four-track banger of an EP, called ‘Daydream EP’.

The touch of Oliver Winters made the original track ‘Appearances’ even more haunting, but also more melodic. He managed to create a very captivating melody, which got enclosed by the elements of the original.

‘Conquest’ is the forty-second release on Aftertech Records, this time by the Dutch Arp Legend, QuiQui. On this EP you will find yourself in a wonderful journey through powerful melodic techno tracks with great additional remixes by Bessiff and Footprint.

The title track “Conquest” starts with a mesmerizing arpeggio right at the beginning. It doesn’t take long before a strong brass is introduced which works in perfect harmony with a growling bassline. While they melt together the melody starts to unfold, telling the story which is the Conquest. A wonderful piece of art by QuiQui, what a way to make his debut to Aftertech Records!

“Request” is not one to mess around with. It starts out strong, dark and ominous. Rumbling basslines, deep dark synths that set the rhythm and sinister echoing noises fill the air. Then a melody arises to glue it all together. While it brings you further into the track it all comes to a massive breakdown where QuiQui makes you drift away in an amazing tension building break only to let the track come back strong than ever before. What a trip!

Bessiff is the first artist who is on remix duties. He works on the wonderful arpeggio skills of QuiQui while adding an extra layer on top which makes it even more spacy than it already was. The groove is simple yet compelling and takes you towards a powerful play of synthwork which will destroy many dancefloors for sure! What an epic remix by Bessiff!

The remix of Footprint is something else entirely. He lets the ground tremble with his massive bassline and starts with a build-up that will make people lose their minds once it reaches the climax. Instead of following up on the power he suggests in the build-up, he creates a wonderful space to get lost in, before the actual drop which does the real damage. In this remix, smartly placed percussions, deep trembling basslines and mesmerizing synth work are key. One hell of a track to dance too in the late hours!
