~ ‘’Profonda Oscurità’’ in English ''Deep Darkness'' was conceived in a difficult year of pandemic where moods of discouragement, bewilderment but also hope were the order of the day.
The EP contains 6 ambient drone tracks influenced by the emotions and sensations of the artist who wanted to express his mood through dark and deep atmospheres by recreating mystical soundscapes.
In this release XIV Orchestral wants to tell a story made of personal moments that don't find a happy ending but that for better or for worse cannot be forgotten...
They have been used Korg ms-20 mini and Elektron Analog Four for most of the low frequencies, Massive VST for atmospheres and noise textures, some field recordings from Zoom h4n.
Main fx plugins: Valhalla VintageVerb, FreqEcho and Tal Chorus Lx.

Mysteries of the Deep is delighted to present its second album by Portland, Oregon-based musician and multimedia artist William Selman (@wselman), entitled “Naming Before Names.” In a world that demands categorization of everything around us through taxonomies, genres, and strict schemas, Selman’s album aims to explore the spaces between categories. His goal is not to offer concrete explanatory gestures, but rather, to create a deliberate space for suspension and ambiguity. These eight compositions conjure a world in which humans are asked to stand on the periphery, observing their surroundings from a vantage of curious wonder, rather than clear definition.

Selman draws from distinct sonic realms, however, citing David Berhman, Maggi Payne, and Alvin Curran as influences. He says, “I like the way these artists use simple forms to ground dense compositions with an approach to composition that is improvisational and collage-like.” In line with this sentiment, the album’s quality is uncannily natural. Many of Selman’s field recordings, collected over a twenty-year period, find a home here, adorning a landscape that’s as visual as it is sonic; we hear hydrophone recordings of tide pools and summer lagoons, grasshopper wings in a lava field, broken humidifiers and sandstorms alongside moments of intentional instrumentation. Light vibraphone gives way to slow hand drum movements. Textured synths add viscosity without extracting us from the ecological world. It feels inaccurate to say the album’s occasional rhythms are constructed; rather, patterns seem to arise organically out of the aether. In Selman’s universe, there’s a sense that everything exists in primordial unity, untouched by the human imprint that insists on fragmenting the world into recognizable parts.

My name is Jimmy Joe Roche and I run a label called Ultraviolet Light. Since I launched UVL in 2015 I’ve been lucky enough to put out 3 cassettes with Todd Barton and we’ve kept something “in the fire” pretty consistently for the last five years. For 2020 I asked Todd if he’d be willing to curate a compilation of Buchela players. So here we are ! 

I think the work I’ve released on UVL has kinship with the sonic richness and experimentation that I associate with instruments designed by Don Buchla. The Buchla sound, and the thought process that people bring to the instrument ( or perhaps that the instruments brings forth in them) is undeniably unique and should be celebrated and preserved. When I wrote the mission statement for UVL I included this line : UVL is “ dedicated to releasing work by artists who push sonic boundaries, emphasize experimentation, conceptualize sound as invisible sculpture and radiate mysterious energies.” I feel like you fit this description and I sincerely hope you’ll be willing to allow us to include a track of yours on this compilation.

My plan is to do a first edition of 200 and mail each participating artist 5 copies as compensation. If the first run of the tape sells out within the year I may do a second edition of 200, again mailing each artist 5 copies. So a maximum of 400 copies total. I don't do online digital sales and I don't do open editions, so the artists always know exactly what and how much I’m selling. You all, of course, maintain all rights to your work and are free to re-release the tracks at a later date but I’d ask that you please wait for the first 200 to sell out ( or about 18 months). The tapes will include digital download cards.

Jac Berrocal is a 1946-born musician (trumpet player), poet and sometime film actor who came of age in the ‘70s Paris improv scene, where the boundaries between music, art and theatre were porous and begging to be breached. Inspired by bebop, chanson, free jazz, beat poetry, early rock ‘n roll and myriad Eastern influences, and with an iconoclastic, anything-goes approach to instrumentation and technique that would later align him with post-punk sensibilities, Berrocal blazed an eccentric and unstoppable trail across the underground throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, both solo and as part of the Catalogue group he co-founded. During this time his uproarious performances routinely wound up jazz and rock audiences alike, but earned the admiration of many musicians: Steven Stapleton invited him to perform on two Nurse With Wound albums, and other notable collaborators in his career include Sunny Murray, Lizzy Mercier-Descloux, Lol Coxhill, Yvette Horner and James Chance. In the 90s his protean achievements were celebrated on the Fatal Encounters compilation, but far from slowing down in the autumn of his life, Berrocal has maintained an extraordinary work-rate, keeping studio dates with Pascal Comelade, Telectu and Jaki Liebezeit, among others. Now Berrocal has found the perfect foil in David Fenech and Vincent Epplay, two fearlessly inventive improvisers, composers and catalysts who create challenging, acutely modernist yet historically aware settings – wrought out of synthesis, guitars, computer processing, field recordings and unorthodox percussions – for Berrocal’s unmistakeable voice and breathtakingly lyrical horn sound to flourish.

Fenech cut his teeth in the mail-art scene of the early ‘90s, leading the Peu Importe collective in Grenoble. His 2000 solo debut was recently reissued by Felix Kubin’s Gagarin label, and he has also worked as a software developer at IRCAM, and played with Jad Fair, Tom Cora, Rhys Chatham and James Plotkin; in 2011 he formed a trio with Berrocal and Ghedalia Tazartes for the Superdisque LP.

Epplay is a highly regarded sonic and visual artist with a particular interest in aleatory composition and autonomous pieces, concrète, and the puckish reappropriation of vintage sound and film material, with dozens of published works to his name on labels like Planam/Alga Marghen and PPT/Stembogen. Exterior Lux is the third part in the series of albums and was again mastered by the legendary Noel Summerville.
